Taylor
Hey everyone :3 ! This morning (well it's 5 AM), I've been wondering about some things regarding music, and more specifically, why do people listen to the songs they listen to ? Being the absolute music addict that I am, I'm interested in sharing my tastes and why I think a song is good/great Please, listen to AT LEAST "My Greatest Songs", and to everyone's favorite songs as well, you could discover some great artists and songs ! And with My "Greatest Songs", you surely will :3 What makes a song... Good When it comes to my personal preference, a "good" song is a song that can put you in the mood, has a good beat OR lyrics and that I can listen to multiple times a day without getting too bored of it. Examples : "War of Attrition" - by e-dubble (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFV_Qg3mMuw) "Psycho (Pt. 2)" - by Russ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mAjq2d3ejk) Great ---------------------------------------------- The best songs of all times. Nothing can top them. The artist successfully reaches me deeply and I can feel the artist feelings when the song was written/mixed, as if I was the artist myself. The song makes me travel with the melody and I can picture the lyrics in my eyes, as if the artist and myself are one. When you can hear the artist voice stress the words as if they were going to break down completely, leaving room for nothing but honesty, feels, and truth. I will not include 2Pac in the following examples, as I would need an entire new thread, only for him. I'm also not going to display these as links, but directly embed them. My Greatest songs (Top 2) : "Dreaming With Our Eyes Open" - by Witt Lowry and "Kindest Regards" - by Witt Lowry ---------------------------------------------- Nothing can top these 2 songs. Nothing. I got about 900 songs in my library. Lots of different genres. I listened to thousands of songs in my life. And none, NONE, can ever top these 2. Witt Lowry. This guy. His songs are the best I've ever heard. The lyrics are so true, he puts his whole soul and mind into the track. And ohhh man, you feel it. It hits you. Hard. Very hard. I could cry to these 2 songs. And apparently, I'm not the only one that thinks like that. Just look at the like/dislike ratio. The best I've EVER seen on music videos in my 8 years of being on Youtube. That's about it for me :3 I'm sorry if this is a long thread, I really put time and passion into it as this is a topic I absolutely love. One main reason is aso because I'm just chilling on the forum and decided to share something with the all of you that is deeply present in my heart. It's currently 6:03 AM in my frenchy city, I just realized spent around 1h20 minutes making this post x) Share with everyone your thoughts and opinions about what makes a good/great and bad/horrible song ! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion :3 ! Share links ! Give a full explanation to why some songs are so important to you :3 ! skateak
I am really into song melodies. There are genres and songs, lyric wise, that I don't like but if I can dig the melody, it's all good. Edited December 17, 2016 by skateak

I like some good lyrics like anyone but if the melody or beat is wack, I don't want anything to do with it. A time and place for everything type of thing for me.

For me, it mostly depends on the genre of music the song is in. A good example is "'(Mr) Lonely" by Akon. The original is perfect, the lyrics are just great, but some remixes have melodies that are so bad or that do not fit in with the song that I can't listen to it. I like that song, great production but I am not a huge R&B fan but I think that is a great song. Probably his best. There are other "pop" songs I like but only because of the beat and melody. If I could get an instrumental version of songs like that, I would be really happy.

I'm pretty sure that there are instumental versions of most songs, since it's not that hard to cut the lyrics off of the track in most R&B/ Rap songs. Not sure if Youtube has it tho, since it may be copyrighted. Probably why you can't find a lot of instrumental versions of popular songs (except for songs like "New To Me" by Russ, that are based off free instrumentals found on Youtube). totallycrushed
To me it's good when it gets my heart pumping so I want to jump into DOOM and slay some monsters Or it gets my heart pumping so that I want to hop on to Ridge Racer and throw my car sideways! If the song makes me want to move, then it's good in my book =D Edited December 17, 2016 by totallycrushed

Lars
For me the melodie is important, it has to be recognizable, this could be done with any instrument, like guitar (David Bowie - Rebel Rebel) piano ( for me at least: Live-Overcome) But for me the best song ever is by the same band as my last example because it is one of the few in which the text can get to me as well, especially the chorus brings back lot of memories, it's Live- Lightning Crashes
Maxximum
I'd say, the chorus is important. If a song doesn't have it, then it's not a song. I also like pre-choruses, like when the singer nearly comes to the chorus. The Melody is also important. At least you get to learn how the song goes, etc. Rap verses, I love hip-hop, I'm a good rapper too (not really, no. I just do it for fun). I like fast ones and catchy ones. Leading to the rhymes, etc.

Not saying I hate them, but they're very few that I've listened to without a chorus.

Yep :3 Plus, my 2 favorite songs of all time (listen to them in the OP if you haven't, both are from Witt Lowry) does not have a chorus And still, no song ever can top them IMO :3
coldkillaaaaaaaa
What makes something good is subjective from a personal perspective. What isn't subjective is skill, that's what makes something good from a critical standpoint.

Waffle-Sensei
My two favorite songs: 1. Space Loves Disco by Humming Urban Stereo 2. Insomnia by Humming Urban Stereo Based off these two I would say that melody, overall composition, instrumental, lyrics, the meaning of them, and the voice that sings them are the most important things to me in a song I guess. I also like it when music makes me feel happy, though that's not a necessity. Oh, and if I can listen to it multiple times at once without getting tired of it or annoyed then that's also a plus (I can listen to anything by HUS multiple times throughout the day, for example). Also just want to state something that I loathe in music in general: I hate it when songs by the same artist or songs in the same genre all sound similar or the same. It's the main reason I hate country and most pop music put out today.
