Unpopular Gaming Opinions

286 posts in this topic

So after a brief exchange with crimsonidol-DE on another topic, I got to wondering what were some unpopular opinions that others held on gaming. The opinion that got all this started is that I don't like Bastion. While I loved Transistor, (had just the right amount of customizability and strategy) Bastion seems a bit too simple. This seems to be far from the general consensus and I am probably one of the few who feels that way.

So I will throw out one more to get this started. I am all for suspension of disbelief. I love a good story. Metal Gear takes disbelief and drives it off of a cliff. I can't take it. It's so ridiculous I can't even enjoy the games. That's one that will probably get me thrown off the forums, but there it is. That's the point of this topic. I'm very interested to know what others have to say!

Is this thread different from these two? Is it just about gaming in general or specific games?

Well, the thread says "gaming" opinions, so I would guess that it's more general than merely "games you dislike that others like".

Anyway, to that end, I am of the opinion that consoles courting PC players is one of the worst ideas in the history of the medium.

Can you elaborate? Do you mean the introduction of F2P elements, etc? (If so, I'm not sure if that's controversial...)

Nope. The thread is for the opinions themselves. I won't get into too many details, because debate should be in more specific threads.

Ok, I just can't understand your opinion as you've put it. I have no problem with it being a list thread. Just curious.

Yes. Let me rephrase.

Popular opinion: Hideo Kojima is a storytelling genius.

My opinion: Holy god its like an a stealth action acid trip. It's way too much no thanks.

Hey, this isn't the "State an objective truth" thread!

Don't expect any deep discussion around these forums.....  Judging by it, most of the replies above missed your point.

Personally I don't care about realism.  I know I'm playing a game, things don't always have to add up and make sense.

I'm playing a game for fun and trophies.  If it's got a good storyline then it's a bonus to me.

Not every game should have a platinum. There are very clearly differences between a small indie title and an expansive open world 100 hour RPG, so why should they be valued the same?

Second both of these. No one forces me to buy certain games but what if friends wanna get drunk and play something retardee, then why not? I don't give a shit, mosr of these games aren't even advertised anyway.

And two, if you (dev) need to choose between realism and gameplay FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST, choose gameplay. So what if your character isn't supposed to carry 10x your weight in loot? IDGAF, just don't punish me making me travel to the city to sell everything every 15 minutes just because i search every nook and cranny.

My addition to this thread now: i rather have a mild story with no plot holes than a deep one full of them (or with too many). Seriously, the two things that break my immersion the most are 1. Difficulty spike that forces me to restart checkpoint over and over again and 2. Plot holes. I HATE watching a cutscene and being like "wait, but why didn't you do that instead?", then being forced to youtube that scene and see if i misunderstood something or missed any detail. Story isn't essential, but IF YOU PUT ONE, MAKE IT SOLID!

I do have a rather unpopular opinion. I think that trophies in souls games and Nioh should be disabled when done co op. While I do not have anything against playing co op and also don't hold the belief that it should be abolished alltogether, I do strongly share the opinion that they should only unlock when done solo. The reason for this is that I generally dislike the fact that the skill needed to obtain these trophies is massively convaluted as you can make them a lot easier through cooperative play.

My unpopular opinion is that Naughty Dog are far too overrated. Never really understood why there's so much praise for them as there game's are not really groundbreaking. Overall I can't understand why people tend to care so much about a specific developer or company, no matter if the game is good or not.. Whether it's a Kojima, Miyazaki, Druckmann, or a Bleszinski. I never really cared for the names behind the game as long as the gameplay is good.

Yup.

I don't even need to finish the thought. In fact, this kind of fanboyism actually pollutes the waters. Dark Souls 2 was an excellent game, but God forbid you dare compare it with Dark Souls. After all, it was made by the B-team! Kojima progressively got worse as he went, but you'd never know it from the fanboys on MGS4's jock.

I rarely think voice acting adds anything to games.

My unpopular gaming opinion:

People should stop bitching about what comes out for PS+. "We never get AAA games anymore.. Waahhh!" Games that are AAA are created by big companies with big budgets hoping to sell tons of copies... and you want them to just hand it to a million people for free? Companies aren't Samaritans and stop hoping for it. They are in the gaming business to make a profit just like anyone else.

Then, we get to the argument of "Why don't they give away old AAA titles like Knack or Watchdogs?" TERRIBLE IDEA! You can get these games for $5 a piece online. Why would you want this over a relatively new game? "It's Indie." is also a bad argument because you are completely generalizing the small markets as crappy games which is far from the truth if you'd sit down and try a few of them.

Hey, I'm not saying that it's perfect or that we should leave zero feedback when they dump garbage on us. I'm just saying to stop being so critical and stop expecting so much from the service. Making deals with companies to allow them to be part of the lineup is much harder than you think.

I'm the king of unpopular opinions lol.

1. I don't care about a games story. A good story can definitely enhance the experience but it's not what I'm there for. Much like porn ;). When I judge a game, story is definitely the lowest thing on my list.

2. I LOVE dlc. More of a game I love is never a bad thing. And giving me a season pass so I can get it cheaper... Yes please.

3. I gladly embrace micro transactions as long as they lead to free DLC, like with Mass Effect 3 or Destiny or other business models like that. I've even spent $ on them just to support a model that I agree with.

4. I think FF7 is one of the weaker in the series for a bunch if reasons I won't go into. But I think 13-2 and LR rank among the best.

5. I think DmC was one of the best hack n slash games of last gen.

I could probably come up with at least a dozen more but that's enough for now.

Just to add my piece to this:

1) The indie game boom is fucking toxic to console gaming.

2) Spec Ops: The Line is over-rated.

3) To echo what was said earlier, I don't think micro-transactions are that bad if done correctly.

4) Just because it's Japanese, it isn't automatically good.
