No you don't need to spend any money to get the base game trophies. You need 5 characters to get the plat. Daredevil is free for + members. After beating the tutorial you will get enough eternal splinters (currency to buy heroes) to get one of the "lower" tier characters: Angela Black Widow Captain Marvel Hawkeye Hulk Kitty Pryde Nova Squirrel Girl By the time you get all the other trophies you will have gotten enough eternal splinters to get 3 more of these characters. If you want a more well known character it will be easier just to spend some money to get it. Also if you spend any $ amount on the game (can be as low as $5) you will get Nightcrawler for free (plus a 5% permanent bonus to XP and credits plus a bonus 5 eternal splinters each day you log in).
