Cassylvania's Miserable Little Pile of Platinums

Well, I tried telling Batman to wait his turn, but he refused to listen. He broke through my window last night, started up my PS4, and dinged me the first trophy in his Telltale game, forcing me to play through the entire first episode. This wasn't the way I planned to do things, but whatever. I'll just play through an episode every few days to space it out.

Oh, and I beat RER on Infernal difficulty. It was harder than I expected. I died 65 times. Not sure if that was for the whole campaign or just on the final boss because he was a TOOL. I also missed a few handprints. Note to those of you playing this game: the handprints do carry over to NG+, but only to NG+. By that, I mean don't think you can make a duplicate save each chapter and then load up that chapter later on to collect any handprints...because it will only count for that save file. I ended up having to play through most of the campaign again just to collect a handprint I missed on Episode 9-2 (which was actually 8-3). My consolation prize, however, was getting to use the infinite rocket launcher the whole time.

But good luck with Velocity Ultra! That game looks like it'd give me seizures. That's the last thing I need in my life.

Just earned the platinum today. I fail to see how it would give you seizures.

Definitely a 6 or 7 out of 10 in difficulty. A well rounded challenge that never feels unfair or broken. But I think Velocity Ultra is now one of my favorite indie games along with Shovel Knight, Dust: An Elysian Tail and Super Meat Boy.

Most certainly worth your while. Takes a bit to get used to the controls, you will have to master them to perfect Zone 50. Look up a Youtube video of that. Lots of concentration and reflexes.

I actually enjoy these types of games. Going to hold off on Velocity 2X for a while until I get other games done. I hear it's a 8 or 9 out of 10 in difficulty, the DLC is even more difficult. But hell if I did most of Super Meat Boy I can sure as shit do Velocity 2X.

Well, that week was hard, but the upcoming one is even harder. I barely had time to play this weekend. I was on a party on Friday. My friend had her 18th birthday and threw a party for approx. 40 people. I had good time. Also, I could meet my long-time-no-see friend. Got home at 4 a.m. on Saturday and got up 5 hours later to clean the house and take care of all the chores. Then I helped my father bring upstairs a 4,5 x 5 meters carpet. Damn it was heavy. Later, I went to see my goddaughter.

UPDATE #6   15.10.2017

On Saturday, when I came back home at 8 p.m. I sat down to Maize and finished the story in 4 hours or so. Throughout the course of the game I collected 70 out of 75 Folio items for the gold trophy. I was falling asleep with the controller in my hands so I decided to finish it the next day.

On Sunday, I got up at 10 a.m. which is quite late for me. I am very angry when I waste time. Hence me sleeping about 6 hours a night. I had very little time to play. I jumped into Maize for a quick clean up of the remaining 5 Folio Items and I also managed to complete the first mission in AC: Syndicate. Wow! What a great day to rest after a whole week of school and work. That half hour game break was what I really needed. I am also very sarcastic. Every. Day. Every. Sentence.

I got the idea to ask you guys a weekly question with every update I make. You don't have to answer. I promise I won't track you down and steal all your cookies while you sleep. Of course, I will continue only with Cassylvania's consent. I will however let myself ask the first question today:

I COLLECTED THE REMAINING FOLIO ITEMS WITH A GUIDE, THEREFORE I WONDER WHAT'S YOUR OPINION ON TROPHY GUIDES? DO YOU USE THEM ONLY IF REALLY NEEDED OR STUDY THEM THOROUGHLY BEFORE PLAYING A GAME SO THAT YOU KNOW HOW TO COMPLETE SAID GAME AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE?

@Spaz I appreciate your cheering but I am waiting for the right moment to commit myslef to these challenges. Maybe next weekend? We'll see about that.

@Avalynch Good job on Legend of Kay! I also bought the Humble Bundle. I'm gonna play 8 games out of 14 I got. Two of these are on PS3 and I already platted these. I'm not gonna play Arcania, Super Smash Bros, the Motocross game and BattleWorld Kronos. Well, they are not the game I'd like to dedicate time to.

Mostly negative feeling from this week and even worse feelings toward the next. But hey, I will welcome South Park: The Fractured But Whole on Tuesday and probably start playing on weekend. I am also collecting scary games to play near the end of the month. I have Layers of Fear to finish, The Evil Within, Amnesia Collection and I will try to buy Alien: Isolation as well. I'm really eager to see Halloween Deals on PlayStation Store too. Wonder what they prepared...

Just have 1 more trophy to achieve before getting the platinum in Legend of Kay, races are pretty annoying, and it would take some time to get it. I do like the name of the trophy, might make it my 1000 trophy milestone... which I'm still 110 away from: .F9UPkY3.png

I'm finding Destroy All Humans to be fairly difficult, these escort, and protect ____ missions come down to the last sliver of health before the "Mission Complete" screen shows itself. Liking the game a bit more now that the Disintegrator Ray is unlocked. Killing things is fun.

@RockyJokerPL If I can go back anytime to collect goodies I missed then I usually won't use a guide. Though I will do quick google searches to see if any areas become inaccessible later in the game. If so, I'd use a guide for that particular area. Games like Until Dawn, where I can accidentally progress in the story, thinking that the area I was exploring was optional I will absolutely use a guide.

I don't mind. :P This topic is mostly for you guys! I already know my thoughts and feelings towards things.

As for your question, I have mixed opinions. Obviously, I appreciate writers taking the time to create guides for people to use. I actually wrote a few guides on the PS Trophies website. That said, there are some games where a guide is not needed, and I don't understand why people resort to walkthroughs. This is mostly for point-and-click or hidden object games. If a guide defeats the purpose for playing the game, then I don't like to use them. Of course, the purpose doesn't have to be difficulty. You could use a guide for a point-and-click game and still enjoy the story...but there are people out there who skip all the text/dialogue too. At that point, I have to ask, "Why?" If you're not playing the game for the challenge, and you're not playing the game for the story, then what are you really doing?

I suppose you could make an argument for gameplay, but those are the kinds of games that have very limited gameplay if you're relying on a guide. In Kingdoms of Amalur, for example, I found it more enjoyable to skip all of the dialogue and just enjoy the game, but there was something to the game besides the story. If you're playing a Telltale game and don't care about the story, then it's pretty clear you're only after trophies, which I don't understand. But that's just me.

Before I play any game, I always look at a guide to see what I'm dealing with. It's generally just a quick glance...looking at missable trophies, the number of playthroughs required, the estimated time to platinum, and the difficulty. I usually don't let these things affect my choice of what games to play, but I will admit that I hesitate when I see multiplayer trophies are involved. When that's done, I'll usually read over the missable trophy descriptions. I prefer a blind playthrough through most games, so I try to get an idea of what trophies to look out for and which ones I can worry about in future playthroughs. I almost never study a guide beyond that, and I won't compromise my enjoyment of the game just to have an easier or quicker time to platinum.

The problem is point and click games have gotten to the point of being laughably easy. Even without a guide you're almost guaranteed to get the platinum in most Telltale Games. Only The Wolf Among Us required you to do a little backtracking, so you couldn't just beat the game and expect to get a platinum without getting a couple collectibles out of the way first.

The old point and click games from back in the day, like Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle Remastered have virtually no challenge now because of how easy it is to look up a guide. Channels like Stay Pationt and Cornshaq Gaming encourage trophy hunters to go after easy games. But in the long term it's better to challenge yourself every now and then. Back in the day yes, these old point and click games were challenging because you had to think and solve puzzles on your own. Lucasarts had a help line at one time where you had to pay money and get a few hints, hopefully they helped you solve a puzzle. There is a lot of looking for hidden objects or things seemingly out of place, and that can be a tough challenge if you're playing these games blind.

Not all multiplayer trophies are bad. Middle Earth: Shadow of War and Shadow of Mordor have easy multiplayer trophies, all you need is an internet connection. Assassins Creed Black Flag has a good amount of multiplayer, unfortunately it takes around 20 - 30 hours to get all it's multiplayer trophies. But there is also a trophy for getting a certain social chest or animal, which only requires you to be connected. I am completely fine with that. Driveclub only has multiplayer trophies for joining a club, and sending challenges to another player. You're not required to play actual multiplayer, which I guess is what you are hesitant with.

I personally think MMOs and MOBAs have destroyed an integral part of gaming where you play simply to try to be one of the best rather than play for the enjoyment. I played around 1000 hours of World of Warcraft, but it's reliance on high competition and it's toxic gaming community turned me off the game. Before I became a trophy hunter I was heavily invested in Old School Runescape. The grind and the luck factor were the two big draws. But since everybody wants to be a high level, the company who's in control of the game feels the need to change content constantly to fit the agenda. I hate that.

At least with most console games and a lot of Steam titles, you never have to worry about the game making a huge amount of changes. Hell, you can quit World of Warcraft, Everquest or Rift II for a few years, come back, and be completely alienated.

Right, I can understand referring to a guide, but there's a difference between looking something up because you're stuck and relying on a walkthrough the entire time. The latter is what I don't understand, because then what's the point of playing the game? I guess it's different for me with action/adventure games, because "beat the next wave of enemies" or "reach the top of the tower to activate the portal" doesn't take away from the gameplay experience. You still have to do something. But if all you're doing is moving from point A to point B because a guide tells you to, that's not really enjoyable to me. I do wonder if future developers are going to take these things into consideration, by designing games that take into account the fact that players can use the internet to find solutions.

Oh, I like SOME multiple trophies. If the game is designed around multiplayer, like PvZ or Paladins or even Injustice, I think they can be a lot of fun. I prefer co-op or local play, but I don't mind playing online. My issue is that MP trophies often require a player doing something that is unfair or unrealistic, such as playing it for dozens of hours, even though the average player would only spend a few hours on that mode. I'm mostly referring to single player games that shouldn't even have MP to begin with. And then there's Naughty Dog and their nonsense with microtransactions in Uncharted 4. That's a shame too, because I actually liked what ND did with the online trophies in UC2 and UC3. (Well, the ones for the platinum. The DLC ones were beyond ridiculous.) I mean, getting a trophy for trying out MP or playing all the different MP modes is completely fair. Asking someone to play for hundreds of hours in the hopes of getting an ultra rare drop is not, nor are trophies that require a boosting group because those situations would never happen by normal means.

I'm pretty sure everyone looked up a guide or walkthrough at some point if they got completely stuck. It was just a lot harder to do back in the 1990s and even the early 2000s because there were not a whole lot of guides out there to give you assistance.

Games like God of War and Devil May Cry rely on knowing enemy patterns and how best to defeat them. A skilled player may play through these entire games without getting hit, somebody else may struggle to beat the first boss. Where you needed to go was pretty straightforward, I haven't played a single third person action adventure game where I was completely stumped on what path to take and where I need to go. They are completely different games as opposed to games like Day of the Tentacle where you had to look around in a given room and find that object you were going to need much later in the game. So there really isn't a comparison.

The point I'm trying to get at is the internet destroyed a lot of point and click games because any idiot can easily look up a guide and beat them in just a couple of hours. They're honestly not that enjoyable anymore. I used to spend hours upon hours on some of them because you had to think outside the box, especially those old Kings Quest games on the old Windows 3.1/95 computers my parents had. We're too impatient today to even think about playing a few hours of a point and click adventure blindly, so they aren't a challenge at all.

I want developers to put in branching paths and different dialogues and solutions to given puzzles, so there's not just one correction solution that any idiot and moron can find on the internet. Right now these games are a one path solution. Telltale Games knows these people would rather play through the movie like experience than to hunt around for clues and puzzles like you had to with the old point and clicks of the past. That's why they're so easy to beat.

I don't mind multiplayer only games either. I still enjoy Old School Runescape on occasion, and watching the various streamers on Twitch play is a delight.

The problem is when these mostly single player games that have an online competent require you to play dozens and dozens of hours. Red Dead Redemption is such an example. Hands down one of the absolute best games from the past console generation. I felt it implemented multiplayer quite well. But you had to work to earn those trophies. Somebody who picks up the game today and goes after the multiplayer trophies may have a much harder time with them as opposed to someone who got the game on launch. You will likely spend a couple dozen hours on the multiplayer, and there are no less than three trophies in all that require no less than six to nine players in order to earn them. One trophy in the base game requires you to be the leader of a posse, and have eight members including yourself to be in it. I can definitely see that being a huge problem for some people.

Then you have games like Battlefield Bad Company 1 that requires you to get 10,000 kills. Or Crysis 2 that requires an insane amount of boosting. Uncharted 2 and 3 multiplayer DLC I hear takes around 150 - 300 hours to earn all the trophies. That doesn't sound all that fun now does it?

Even The Last of Us, which I played on an alt account and absolutely loved, requires no less than 26 - 30 hours of multiplayer due to two gold trophies. Not DLC, but required trophies in the base game if you want the platinum. That sucks, because the Uncharted games want you to try out multiplayer if you only want the platinum. But I need to spend a good two dozen hours on the multiplayer in The Last of Us?

Yes I remember gaming in the late 90s. Getting stuck on an area or a puzzle in a game actually resulted in you having to bash your head against it until you figured it out, whereas today you just type it into google. I even remember those phone hotlines you could call for solutions, I don't know who used them though because the call charges were banditry.

You're right about The Last of Us. I'm doing it at the moment, it essentially forces you to play 168 individual multplayer matches (I think) to complete the faction storylines. The multplayer is okay, but not good enough to justify that kind of investment. I'm sure Naughty Dog knew that though when they locked the plat behind it.

I just spent eighteen hours humping a droid in star wars to get to level 100 and I'm wondering what I'm doing with my life. South Park came out today which I preordered over a year ago and I know the game will be great but I can't say I'm really excited or even thrilled to play it right now which is extremely fucking cynical but that's where I'm at mood wise. On the subject of guides I use them for some games on a second playthrough or a missable trophie but I usually tend to glance at them before a game so my experience isn't to tapped. I like multiplayer games like 7 days to die or ones that are made to played coop or with friends but games like star wars battlefront with their trophies are just unejoyable after this last grind.

I just bough four (well, actually six) games form the Halloween sale. I bought Alien Isolation, Devil May Cry HD Collection, The Park and Kholat. I was torn between Kholat and Uncanny Valley so I left it up to the spinning wheel to decide. Kholat won the best of five lottery. I wanted to get some new horror games from the sale. And I managed to buy DMC HD Collection for such a cheap price. Generally, I am happy with my purchase.

As for the question I asked: I agree with everyone at least partially. How do I use guides? Well, if I am just starting a game I check what to look out for. I take a quick peek at missable trophies and that's all. However, if I don't mind missing some trophies I just don't use a guide at all. Batman Arkham Kinght is a game I used a guide for missable trophies (if I remember well there weren't any, but I did check if I should keep an eye on something). But I am sure as hell not going to use a guide for South Park The Fractured But Whole because I don't mind playing the game twice or even three times if needed.

When it comes to collectibles I first try to find a text guide. Then I tend to just look at the general location of a certain collectible. If I spend 5 minutes actively looking for it in the specified area I just read it's whereabouts in a guide to save myself some time. If I'm really desperate and there are no text guides I use YouTube.

Well, well. South Park The Fractured But Whole came to me yesterday and it's beautiful <3<3<3

Hey everyone! Glad to see you're all enjoying your new games. I do have the new South Park game, but I haven't played it yet. In fact, I haven't really been playing anything on my list. I think RER has me burned out. I'm not 100% sure yet, but I might just add the Crash trilogy to my Halloween list (and remove RER) and call it complete. I just don't think I have it in me to finish RER any time soon, and it seems a shame to not include the Crash games in this event, since they were such a huge part of my September. How are they spooky? Well, there's a freaky mask that used to give me nightmares as a kid, and the platforming is scary hard. That's good enough for me!

I'll still need to finish Batman: The Telltale Series, but I won't be doing the Arkham Knight DLC right now. I've tried and it's just not happening.

No progress update because I'm lazy, and also because I only got three hours of sleep. Zzzz.

Hotline Miami 2 is going to be my Halloween platinum this year.

I wouldn't call it a horror game but with so much blood and gore it's basically what you would expect from slasher films that are horror.

Very cool! I considered that one, but it looks like it'd give me a seizure, and I'm more into the treat side of things than the trick. (Also, by the way, I'll probably be playing Until Dawn again, because that game was awesome and I don't care that I already have the platinum. Just like I've been playing more XCOM 2 lately, even though I think I've done everything that game has to offer, save for a Legendary Ironman run.)

Well, here's my update or whatever. You can see I've really... yeah.

Hello everyone! It was a good week for me. Kinda lousy at school so I had plenty of time for my C++ and Pixel Art online courses. I also managed to pass my driving license exams. Theoretical and practical, both on first try! I am now feeling accomplished and a bit less nervous.

UPDATE #7   23.10.2017

On Saturday, I came back home in the morning. I was at my friend's house drinking on Friday. It took me some time before I took care of all house chores. I was ready to play at 3 p.m.

I took care of the speedrun trophy in Maize first, then got a new trophy that came out for Killing Floor 2 and lastly went on to play South Park The Fractured But Whole. This game is pure gold. I loved The Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole provides much more of the same, but on steroids. I like the new combat system, but I'd rather have items than artifacts as sources of my power. I'm not saying it's bad. It was just a bit complicated at first, but I'm slowly getting a hang of it.

On Sunday, I played South Park again. I also encountered a glitch. The game began autosaving and for about an hour and a half it would not finish. I wasn't able to save my game, so I had to turn it off without doing so. I lost all progress I made during autosaving. I'm not really angry about this, because I don't mind playing through it once more. It's not much. I am glad my save data didn't corrupt.

Question of the week:

Have you watched South Park series? If so, how many seasons did you see?

I fell in love with South Park series when I started watching it for the first time. I started things off with Season 1 and during one year I watched all 19 Seasons. I watched most of them during summer when I had a lot of time. Now I'm up to date with the series and I watch every new episode. I had fun most of the time, however the 20th Season is my least favorite.

I made a separate list of Halloween games I am going to play for a week (28.10 - 05.11). Fortunately, I am having a long weekend starting 1st of November so I'll have plenty of time.

You can see I've really... yeah.

Progress on October 13-22, 2017:

LOL what progress?

Overall progress

  1. The Escapists: The Walking Dead (23/25)
  2. Metro: Last Light Redux (48/50)
  3. South Park: The Stick of Truth (49/51)
  4. Batman: Arkham Knight (102/110)
  5. The Deadly Tower of Monsters (22/24)
  6. Dead Synchronicity (23/25)
  7. Resident Evil (43/45)
  8. Claire (14/16)
  9. Enigmatis: The Ghosts of Maple Creek (10/12)
  10. Batman: The Telltale Series (6/31)
  11. Crash Bandicoot (25/25)
  12. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (25/25)
  13. Crash Bandicoot: Warped (25/25)

Hotline Miami 2 is a TOUGH game. Lots of offscreen enemies that can kill you, tons of windows, very luck based when going for combos, etc. It'll frustrate you more than you'll enjoy it.

The carrot patch is dying! ? I summon Lord Carro- Bunn- Rabbit!

Finished the Destroy All Humans campaign, just have to tip some cows, steal brains (for science!), and collect more probes for the platinum. For anyone planning to play this game; Holobob as many unique characters as you can for the Identity Thief trophy. I only disguised myself as 2 unique characters, and popped the trophy, but to save yourself the trouble of holobobbing as random NPC's hoping the stat would increase get the unique characters who only appear during missions.

Coo (Started, and finished Hatoful Boyfriend. Thanks PS Plus, not sure if I needed this in my life, but now I don't think I could've lived without it.  Anybirdie, and their mother can 100% this game).

Started Amnesia: The Dark Decent, played a bit of this on PC at a friends house a couple years ago. Still got scared, when the monster appeared, and started stalking me. Disappearing every time I'd turn around. ? Getting all the tinderboxes, and notes I see without a guide, but I'm bound to miss some. Unclear as to which sections of the castle become inaccessible later in the game, and when, so a second playthrough will be required.

It's pumpkin season now! But it's okay. I wanted to wait until closer to Halloween to continue playing Batman, since I assume it's one of those games that'll give me a platinum just for beating it. Can't have that ruining my platinum-palooza on Tuesday!

Good job on your games, everybody. As for your question, Rocky, I used to watch South Park back when it first came out. I've probably seen three or four full seasons, but I'll still catch an episode every now and then if I see it on. I like it more than Family Guy anyway, but I'm more into KotH and Bob's Burgers, which I think are funnier and less disgusting. Still, it's a very clever show. I'll probably play the new game soon.

As the sheriff of this carrot patch I can assure you that I've been looking in the woods and the trails around our carrot patch for suspicious people and have found no one carrying pesticides or rat poison. As an extreme caution to this alerted suspicion and because I have no friends I'll work on Halloween night to look for pranksters and carrot stealers that could cause harm. I know fifteen miles to the north of here is a weed farm that could be detrimental to our carrot patch but I've been keeping a lookout so far and there's nothing from their business that seems to cause alarm as of yet.

Congrats on your Halloween plats :)

Thanks so much! No major updates this week. Just working through my XCOM 2 L/I campaign. No causalities so far, but I'm only about five or six missions into the game. Still, those are the hardest missions...and it's taken me multiple attempts to get that far without any deaths.

I'm not sure if they'll make an XCOM 3, but I think XCOM 2 is as close to "perfect" as any game I've ever played. Even so, there are numerous things that I think would improve the game. I've played the PC version before and there are some really fantastic mods, so I'm hoping the developers incorporate some of those improvements into future games...
