FFVIII Theories Finally Put to Rest

In an article from Kotaku Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase puts 2 of the biggest FFVIII fan theories to rest! Finally! 

 

Here's an excerpt from finalfantasyunion.com on the article.

And the most important information.

"On the theory that Final Fantasy 8's Squall dies at the end of Disc 1 when he's stabbed by Edea's ice spear and that the rest of the game is his dream: 

"No, that is not true," Kitase said, laughing. "I think he was actually stabbed around the shoulder area, so he was not dead."'

 

So there's that one! Squall was alive for the entirety of the game. Settled!

"On the theory that Final Fantasy 8's Rinoa is really Ultimecia:

"No, that is not true," Kitase said. "I don't think I'll incorporate that even if we do remake the game. But that being said, both Rinoa and Ultimecia are witches, so in that sense they are similar, but they're not the same person.""

 

So there we have it, Rinoa is never Ultimecia. 

This is imo the biggest fan theory FFVIII had, so getting a definitive answer is nice. Even though I liked the idea of it being a bittersweet theory. 

 

So that's that, however he does hint he likes some theories, and if they made a remake he'd keep them in mind.

In the cutscene where squall was stabbed, you could tell it went into his right shoulder, not sure why people thought he was dead. 

 

Never heard the rinoa theory before, ultimecia uses her powers to posses sorceresses, even states that in the game

I kind of liked the Rinoa = Ultimecia theory.  A lot of the parallels even made sense.

 

Would be hyped if they remade this, as it's my favorite FF game

Well, that's disappointing. To be honest, I think I would have preferred it if he just stayed quiet so players could come to their own interpretations. Those two fan theories were always super interesting to me, especially the one about Squall dying at the end of disc 1. It was fun to speculate.

 

It's interesting how he mentions a remake of the game. I'd love to see that, but would happily settle for a PS4 version of the original much like FFVII got.

When it comes to stuff like this, headcanon is more important, imo. Because, most fan theories are wrong, especially when it comes to older stuff. As illustrated in the full interview, they don't think that in depth, and fan theories are generally just people over analyzing. Some fan theories also get confirmed by the director/writer/whoever just because that person likes the sound of it. Just like in this interview, where Kitase says that he likes the idea of Squall dying at the end of the first disc, and would incorporate it into a remake, given the chance. Essentially making it canon, just because he liked the idea.

To be fair it wasn't just the ice projectile, once struck he also fell a considerable distance from a sizeable parade float. I thought it was an interesting theory at least but I never really bought into it.

Wasn't aware of, and now not a fan of, the Squall death theory. I always thought the Ultemecia theory was really interesting and compelling so I'm sad to see a definitive answer, would have been better left open to interpretation I think.

Yeah, I was a bit skeptical about the "Squall is dead" theory, but I was rather invested in the "Rinoa = Ultimecia" theory. So while its nice to have it finally answered, its a shame neither of them were true!

Yea, I'd love to see it ported to PS4 like FFVII was, I imagine it shouldn't be too difficult as it's already on Steam with achievements (some crazy achievements on that list I'd love to do!)

I'm still kinda disappointed with how easy FFVII's list was. I don't know why removed some of the harder achievements from Steam's list for the PS4 version. But yeah, while they're at it, they should bring FFIX over to PS4 as well. I'd love to platinum the entire "golden age" of Final Fantasy.

I honestly hate it when devs do this. Let fans have fun, let them speculate. While I didn't believe the Squall is dead theory, I still thought it made the game's story better.

Despite the visual similarities between Rinoa and Ultimecia in the final battle you see Ultimecia use Griever as a GF.

And Griever is Squall's pendant which he gives to Rinoa.

 

Also in (iirc) Dissidia there is Ultimecia which uses either Rinoa's Weapon or Dog (not sure which, someone correct me please).

It's never been confirmed if dissidia is canon or not, as far as her being able to junction griever as a guardian force, all it takes is for her to possess someone for a short time to use their abilities

Good good. Don't really like any of the fan theories so to see them rejected by the creators is a good thing.

 

Please no remake though. Don't really care that they are ruining FF7 with a terrible remake, but don't do the same to 8. I really like 8!

Finally I can sleep at night. People honestly believed that Squall was dead from Disc 1 on? That's the silliest thing I've heard since the Mass Effect 3 indoctrination theory.
