I hear you Nags, and its nothing but love, but if it does give the site 1 to 10% of those new members, thats 1 to 10% that can then spread it further. I could understand getting upset if someone is spamming referral links all over the forum, but putting it in your signature shouldn't bother anyone. That's supposed to be your little space to personalize as you see fit. Unless a referral link is as bad as hardcore porn or violence nowadays (two parts of a very small list of things that shouldn't be in a signature), I don't think I like whatever forum you are referring to... not very much at all my good sir. Anyways, I only frequent two forums/social sites. This one, and a hockey forum that doesn't allow signatures at all.
