R.I.P August Ames

Beloved porn actress August Ames passed away on Tuesday, December 5th. It seems like it was a suicide but has not been confirmed. This might seem like a shitpost, but it's not. It's kind of sad considering she was only 23. She was also pretty funny on her Twitter account. It's actually pretty sad to me. If I remember to update this, I will when more info comes to light.

EDIT: It was officially ruled a suicide. People, if other people are just being shitbags to you on social media, turn it off and play some vidya. This doesn't need to happen to anyone, even though it happens too often.

I think the entire thread will end up being deleted because you're talking about a pornstar here. But it's kinda obvious most members of the site have seen some form of porn. I heard it was because she was cyber-bullied a lot, I thought it took some form of self-confidence and mental composure to be a pornstar in the first place, so I'm kind of surprised it took internet trolls to make a pornstar commit suicide.

What!? I'm really sad to hear this. She was one of my favorites. She had a real talent.

Skimming through the article it seems that investigators have reported there were no signs of foul play. Her friends reported that she was "suffering from depression and online bullying". Days before her death she received media backlash after tweeting several tweets about working with men who have starred in gay adult movies. These comments made her branded as a homophobe. She later tweeted out that she "loved the gay community" and the tweets were not meant to be malicious. It seems she was going through stuff and that is what seemed to drive her over the edge.

It's a shame really. She was only looking to not put her body at risk and the responses she got over twitter were inconsiderate and uncalled for. It's important for everyone in her line of work to be precautious in what they do and she received backlash because of it, it's sickening.

But it is what is. May she rest in peace.

Not to derail this thread or anything, but people going through tough times or extreme / suicidal tendencies should be limited or banned from social media.

I've been trolled and had death threats on trivial things such as Tekken6. (After I double perfected a guy he said he would find where I live and try to kill me) Naturally trolling and other such words on the Internet, it's rarely real or genuine. Problem is, people commenting at you saying "You suck" or "You should die". Or similiar. If you're not in the right frame of mind these kind of comments can be deadly.

If you're going through a tough time, sometimes things can seem a lot worse than they actually. If you're going through a tough time, you should durround yourself with people you trust and go and talk with someone and get support.

Going to Twitter, Instagram, Facebook etc, is the WORST thing you can do.

Just an aside, I don't think this thread should be closed just because its for a porn star. That's quite judgmental and hypocritical if so.

Any time any human feels the need to take their own life, it's a sad event. Whatever demons were haunting her before, at least she's at rest now. It's too bad her friends and/or family couldn't see this coming and got her the help she needed.

What I later heard was that it was SJWs who bullied her online because she mentioned that she wouldn't want to perform with a man who had also done gay porn. They accused her of being homophobic for mentioning that.

It's not always evident that the person has mental health problems. A lot of people bottle up their emotions and suddenly they commit suicide or do something horrific and everyone around them says "I didn't think anything was wrong with them". Some people use the internet as an escape from their depression because it's the only place where they can confide in other people, not everyone has good social skills in the outside world.

my wife tells me that recent medical studies have hinted at a correlation between hours spent on social media versus level of depression...as in, a lot of time in a day spent on social media = quite depressed...no real point with regards to topic...i just thought it was interesting...

Being nearly 30 years of age hearing such threats and gestures from random people doesn't bother me anymore.

When I was 13 - 14 years and just starting to use the internet on a regular basis back in 2001 - 2003, being talked down to or threatened affected me a lot. I saw it as just a way for bullies to please themselves. Just because we saw bullies pick on others back in our elementary school days doesn't mean the same isn't happening on the internet.

It happens all the time. Amanda Todd is one such example of a girl who was pushed too far from people on the internet, sadly leading to her suicide.

People are far too sensitive these days. You hear a lot more cases of kids saying they were bullied by their teacher or coach because they wanted to push them a little harder. I look at society today as being fragile, not necessarily because of peoples personalities but more so a reflection of what social media has done to the landscape.

Social media in a lot of ways is a good thing. But far too often I see people threatening others just because they happen to be a Liberal or a Conservative, or they will pick on a person like Amanda Todd who was highly vulnerable to begin with.

The point being is there are literally hundreds of cases of teenagers and young adults like August Ames who kill themselves or feel highly threatened, whether it's from bullies at the school yard or bullies online. I never knew Ames nor do I know the events that went on prior to her death. But regardless it's very sad that so many young people like her take their own lives.

People need to stop going to their social media accounts if they're feeling that badly and seek professional help. I know that has been said a million times here on the internet but it has proven to help. I think more research needs to be done on this, especially considering that people who are always in depression are not going to be productive members of society. I personally think our generation is overly sensitive, and we seem to over react whenever our boss at work, teacher at school or coach on the football field tell us to work harder to strive to be better.

We as a human race, are bored.  We're bored, lazy people desperately seeking validation.

Social media, in and of itself, is an ingenious way to keep in touch with people, meet new people and keep up with the news.  It's been bastardized however, unsurprisingly, becoming a platform of exponentially growing hyperbole and self-aggrandizing with people surrounding themselves by those they agree with... staging loosely coordinated attacks on things that they disagree with (however insignificant in the grand scheme of things).  I'm sure to many people, that's thrilling.  It's easy and satisfying being emboldened by the belief that every complaint they have are both justified and being listened to (with direct responses from the attacked party and/or media coverage)... spewing vitriol in a 140 character tweet, numb to the consequences of their actions, all from the comfort and relative anonymity of their phones, tablets or computer desks... but to me, it seems very unhealthy.  Unhealthy for the people attacking with ego's out of check and disconnected from the reality of their day to day lives, and those being attacked for obvious reasons.

For everything from attacking EA because of microtransactions, or attacking a pornstar for perceived indiscretions.  As the power of social media grows, people need to be brought back down to Earth... and I don't see that happening.  It's hard to take "power" away from people once they got a taste of it.

(For the record, I don't know who this pornstar is... not one of my regulars. xD But RIP.  No one deserves to go that way, and that young.)

The problem I see is younger people were practically brought up with social media. Not everyone, but a good number of them have.

Social media is everywhere these days. Even the older couple you’ve known down the street for many years probably has their own social media profile just like everyone else.

The alarming suicide rate in many younger people I very much feel has strong ties with increased activity on social media online. Countries like Norway and even where I am in the States has a lot of young folks who seem disconnected from reality. I definitely notice a trend of these kids having a lot of trouble speaking in public. I find it very sad that a lot of parents out there just sit their kids in front of the television or computer and not teach them fundamental skills needed to be productive in the real world.

People need to be brought down to Earth like you said. But we have an entire generation that grew up with MySpace and later Facebook and Twitter. They feel the need to spend hours on their smartphones every day, tweeting that Donald Trump is going to fail or succeed. Mass media is all over politics. People constantly read up on politics or what their favorite celebrity is doing, and therefore they gradually slip away from the reality of day to day life.

I’m at least thankful I grew up in a time when the ease of accessing the Internet wasn’t available in every street block and alley. We take everything for granted, and as a result we’re more self entitled than we ever were in the past.

That's sad. Is there evidence that the safety standards in gay male porn are more lax than those outside of it?

I'm not sure. Her main concern was what those male performers did in their personal lives, not what they've done in front of cameras.
