Popular Post Toogie53
I swiped my daughter's favorite dual shock controller (seriously, she still is moving the living room furniture around almost daily trying to find it) and am giving it a makeover as a Christmas gift. She pretty much only plays Overwatch and Junkrat is her favorite hero; so I designed the theme after him. I'm not 100% done with it, but thought I'd post a couple of progress photos. I have a friend cutting me some vinyl decals for me to try out. I want to see if I can use those as a stencil instead to paint the icon rather have the vinyl on the controller, I'll have to play that by ear, once I have the vinyl in hand. I also intend to use the vinyl as a stencil for the button icons. I'm debating adding some duct tape to the back on the grips. But I think that might suck later when it inevitably starts to peel. This is the initial mock-up. I did this part before I stole the controller from her. The idea wasn't perfect but I decided this could definitely be cool. Spoiler The controller I stole was your standard black controller. I took it apart and started sanding the pieces. Here it is with a first pass of paint. I kind of made a mistake on it. I sprayed a touch up coat on the yellow to cover up a thin spot, and it kind of peeled away and cracked. On a normal controller, I'd have had to sand this off and start over. But since I planned to make the controller look weathered, I left it as-is. After it was dry enough, I put it back together so I could hide it for a while and let it dry without worrying about losing pieces. Spoiler I let the paint dry/cure for over a little over a week. Last night, I applied some weathering to the controller. The cracked paint was able to catch a lot of the dirt and grime I was trying to get and helped with the aged effect. I think it worked really well, very serendipitous. After I was done, I reassembled it and was able to test it out and it's still functional. I was really worried that I'd ruin it or have sticky buttons or things like that. But it's turned out well. Toogie: "I'm so glad you like it." Toogietta: "I just wish I could find my favorite black controller." Toogie: ?
skateak
Wow that is pretty damn cool. She is lucky the have a father that would put in the effort to make something rather than just buy it. I would stay away from the duct tape though, for the same reason you posted.

It helps that I'm also a gamer and into the same kind of things as her.

Toogie53
I did! I was worried about it, but it still works fine. The reason I went ahead with that is because I could only think of two games that use the swiping, Infamous Second Son and Tearaway Unfolded. A lot of games use it as a tactile button that you push, but that would work even if the touch recognition didn't.

Lorajet
@Toogie53 with GTA5, the voices come out of the DS. Does that still work okay after painting it? Beautiful job, nonetheless! I don't expect any oroblems though, because that whole motherboard type section of the controller all comes out together.
