SelectiveGamer
Apparently this counts as a different series on MAL even though it's part of the same show/franchise. Oh well I guess. So yeah. Fairy Tail 2014. Animation seems vastly improved now. But maybe it's just me or something. Or I'm just biased because I've been LOVING this series ever since I've started watching it. ?
Popular Post Cave Johnson
I’m going to try to be more concise this time, since this is going to cover nearly everything I’ve seen in the last three months or so. I’m also going to leave out the cover images for each anime, as this is going to take up enough space as it is. The bulk of this was written when I was awake for nearly 40 hours consecutively after consuming enough caffeine to kill a normal person. In other words, read this at your own risk. Binbougami ga! (finished) I previously described Maria Holic as a whacked-out comedy, however, that description arguably fits Binbougami even more. There’s little point in comparing them any further, though I’d like to note that I greatly prefer the humour in Maria Holic. So, what led me to watch this? The answer is simple, this: Binbougami has its problems, but at least managed to be entertaining enough for all 13 episodes. I wasn’t too impressed with the first two episodes, but it (mostly) improved later. Some of the gags really fell flat for me, and occasionally the amount of blatant references is just too much. [Throwing out a bunch of references ≠ comedy] When a reference is so unsubtle that even those unfamiliar with the series being referenced can get it, they fucked up. Binbougami is one of many anime adaptations that will never be finished. Would I read the manga? Probably not. Yutori-chan (finished) Here’s another anime I watched because of the seiyuu involved. Yutori-chan is a short ONA from 2009 that no one has ever heard of. Compared to some of the weird shit that can be found under the ONA category, it’s fairly normal. Since the episodes are short, even all 25 episodes together are about as long as two regular anime episodes. Perhaps it is because I had no expectations to begin with, but I enjoyed it for what it was. The best part of Yutori-chan is Yutori herself; her bluntness never stops being funny. Non Non Biyori, Non Non Biyori: Repeat, Non Non Biyori: Vacation (finished) This is another one of those “Why didn’t I watch this sooner?” kind of anime for me. I had been planning on watching Non Non Biyori for quite some time, but never got around to it. Thanks to @Neku-tan's recommendation, I was reminded of it and finally started (and finished) Non Non Biyori recently. Non Non Biyori may not appear to be anything special at first. I’ve seen a lot of slice of life anime, so I thought I knew what to expect from it. However, as I quickly found out, Non Non Biyori is the height of the iyashikei (sub)genre; I love it so much that I’d rank it as highly as K-On or Hidamari Sketch. Everything is perfect from the setting to the characters, their interactions, and of course, the comedy is always on point. Long before I even planned on watching Non Non Biyori I remember seeing gifs of Renge, and now I can finally see why she is such a beloved character. Basilisk: Kouga Ninpouchou (finished) Basilisk: Kouga Ninpouchou is one of many adaptations of the similarly named 1958 novel. It’s actually an anime adaptation of the manga… which is based on the novel, but whatever; close enough. I knew of it because the opening is by one of my new favorite bands, Onmyo-za. I also knew both ending songs beforehand. Did I really watch it just because of that? Basically. I thought it would be an interesting change of pace, at least. While not perfect, there were some moments that really stood out to me. I don’t really care to go in depth, and mostly everything would be a spoiler anyway, so I’ll just say this: Whatever the opposite of iyashikei would be, that’s what Basilisk is. There’s nothing uplifting to be found here at all. That said, it’s pretty damn good and well worth watching. Even in DVD quality, the visuals and animation of Basilisk are incredible. Not that screenshots alone could do it justice, though. Youjo Senki, Gekijouban Youjo Senki (finished) An isekai that’s so different from others it’s easy to forget that it is one in the first place, that’s Youjo Senki. Unsurprisingly, this is yet another anime I watched because of the seiyuu involved. Given the synopsis, I wasn’t sure how interesting it would be. I can’t say that I’m all that interested in World War I, or the history of war in general. Despite that, I ended up loving Youjo Senki; it’s one of my favorite anime from the last few years. Not long after finishing the movie, I went and bought every volume of the light novel that is currently available. I just finished the third volume, and it’s even better than the anime so far. Instead of screenshots, this time I’d like to share a relevant video (two seiyuu from Youjo Senki sort of discussing it): Koufuku Graffiti (finished) Koufuku Graffiti is probably the most “normal” anime from Shaft. Aside from the eating parts, I guess.* I think it deserves at least a little more recognition, since it is a fairly good iyashikei that never seems to be mentioned. *A perfect description of the aforementioned “eating parts” by Kirin. A few more screenshots I’d like to add: I can’t think of the right adjective… “pretty” maybe? I don’t know, but I really love the character design in this. Sakura Trick (re-watched/finished) Did I really just watch Sakura Trick for the third time? Of course; I’m only half-joking when I call it a masterpiece. This time I watched it without subtitles to change things up, even though that is still far beyond my level. Either way, it wasn’t an issue because at that point, I had already read the manga and seen the anime twice. Sakura Trick is special to me for a number of reasons. It is the second anime I ever watched, right after K-On, first yuri anime (partially responsible for awakening my love of yuri), first anime I re-watched, first anime I re-watched twice, and the first anime I watched without subtitles. Episode 8 is perhaps the cutest, sweetest, most adorable thing I’ve ever seen. The first time I saw it, it made me feel things I didn’t know I was capable of feeling. Kara no Kyoukai (all) [finished] For a while now, I mainly knew of Kara no Kyoukai for two reasons. One, it is the primary reason why Kalafina was formed, and two, my sister loves it. After years of screwing around, I finally watched these movies, as I should’ve done earlier. Aside from the songs, I went into Kara no Kyoukai knowing nothing about it. Since the studio responsible is ufotable, I knew I could at least expect quality animation, as well as a top tier soundtrack thanks to musical genius Yuki Kajiura. What I experienced was just that, and so much more. The order of the first four movies is achronological, so some effort must be put in by the viewer to piece things together. That said, I don’t think it is all that difficult to grasp. My personal favorite is the fifth movie, Mujun Rasen; it is the grand result of the foundation built by the first four movies. I may throw around “masterpiece” a lot, sometimes jokingly, but I truly think Mujun Rasen deserves that title. The sixth movie, sometimes regarded as kind of filler, is still a good entry in the series. Though not the last movie, Satsujin Kousatsu (Zen) concludes just about everything from the first six movies. For me it’s the second best, very close to Mujun Rasen. Mirai Fukuin is an excellent side story/epilogue that I think shows there are still more stories to be told from Kara no Kyoukai. Or maybe not; perhaps it’s better that it ended on a high note, rather than dragging out the series with unnecessary sequels. Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita (re-watched/finished) This is another instance of “read the manga, gained a new appreciation for the series, went back and watched the anime again” for me. I also watched the OVA that I had missed out on the first time. There’s nothing new I care to add, so that’s it, I guess. Despite being an anime that is primarily about lolis, I can’t help but think that Miyako is the real angel here. Monogatari Series (all) [finished] Where to even begin? I started Bakemonogatari on a whim back in late November. Like with Kara no Kyoukai, I went into the Monogatari series knowing nearly nothing about it. I wasn’t even aware of how incredible the seiyuu cast is in this; seriously, some of the best male and female seiyuu of the last 10-15 years are part of the cast. Of course, I at least knew that the anime studio was Shaft. In fact, that’s a large part of why I started Monogatari in the first place. I loved every minute of Bakemonogatari, and became focused on seeing the rest of the series after finishing it. At first, I went out of order a bit and started Nisemonogatari. I wanted to follow the light novel order, but also felt conflicted about watching Kizumonogatari next, since it came out so much later. Now I know that there was no reason to do that. The light novel order (the way the author intended) makes the most sense. Anyone who says to follow the airing order can be promptly ignored My sister loves Hachikuji, and as much as I hate to agree with her, I can see why now. Getting back on track, I quickly finished Nisemonogatari and then Nekomonogatari (Kuro) soon after. I enjoyed Nisemonogatari almost as much as Bakemonogatari, and Nekomonogatari was alright. While I like Hanekawa as a character, her arcs just aren’t that interesting to me for some reason. Next, I finally watched Kizumonogatari 1-3 before starting Second Season. At this point, nothing had managed to top Bakemonogatari for me… until I saw all of Second Season. Pictured above: Shaft being Shaft. Second Season starts off with yet another Hanekawa arc, but it’s probably the best of the three. The remaining episodes are made up of some of my favorite arcs in the whole series. Without spoiling anything, I love how Kabukimonogatari goes in a completely different direction than I ever saw coming. Onimonogatari also went in a direction I didn’t expect [spoilers] Spoiler and caught me off guard. This is one of the few times this series brought me to tears: ;_; Koimonogatari is the arc I never knew I wanted. It made me appreciate a certain character who is now one of my favorites. [spoilers again] Spoiler This entire exchange between Senjougahara and Kaiki in the first Koimonogatari episode is both brilliant and hilarious. Hanamonogatari is different and takes place [possible spoiler] Spoiler later than everything else in the series that has been animated so far. I didn’t think it was quite as good as the other arcs from Second Season. It is, however, an interesting look at Kanbaru’s true character. As shown in Owarimonogatari and Zoku Owarimonogatari, [definitely spoilers] Spoiler Kanbaru didn’t magically get over her love for Senjougahara back in Bakemonogatari, and still harbors some resentment towards Koyomi. Hence why she acts so much differently with everyone but him. Koyomi’s constant lolicon jokes never fail to make me laugh. Tsukimonogatari is a vital piece of the story that also happens to prominently feature Ononoki; if that sounds like the start of a great arc, that’s because it is. These first four episodes are officially the beginning of “Monogatari Series: Final Season”. This series makes it really difficult to pick a favorite character given the amazing cast it has. Even now, I’m not sure if I could pick just one, though I am leaning towards Shinobu. Owarimonogatari may sound like the end, but then there’s Koyomimonogatari, the second part of Owarimonogatari, and finally Zoku Owarimonogatari. My only complaint with Owarimonogatari is that it starts off slow. Or maybe it’s just that the parts with Sodachi didn’t need to be that long; the point of these arcs could’ve easily gotten across in half the time. Pictured above: Shaft being Shaft (again). This is one of most obvious references, so I can only imagine how many others went right over my head. The subsequent arc, Shinobu Mail, more than makes up for the slow start. Once again, the direction it goes in was nothing like I could’ve expected. As such, I also didn’t [spoilers] Spoiler expect the last episode to be that sad. “I’m glad I met you again. I thought I’d never see you again, But now we will never meet again.” My heart broke at this part. Koyomimonogatari seems like a side story that isn’t that important at first, but it has one of the best Tsukihi quotes*… okay, on a more serious note, the last few episodes are absolutely essential to the plot. There are 12 episodes, but their length makes it more like six regular anime episodes. *The previously mentioned quote. At this point, it’s easier to say what isn’t a spoiler. The second part of Owarimonogatari is rather short at only seven episodes. [spoilers] Spoiler I honestly didn’t expect Hachikuji to come back, but it’s a development I strongly welcome. In fact, I was quite surprised with how nicely everything wrapped up at the end. I wouldn’t have it any other way though; I’ve had enough of bittersweet and tragic endings for the time being. ...she might want to rethink that. Zoku Owarimonogatari is a good epilogue (wow, I’m really running out of words here). Here are some screenshots from various points in the series instead: Me after watching every episode of Iwa Kakeru and Maesetsu. Yuru Camp (re-watched/finished) The second season is airing soon, so I felt like watching the first again. Yuru Camp is one of the best iyashikei that needs no explanation nor introduction. One thing I’d like to reiterate is that the episodes just seem to end too fast. And I of course mean that in the best way possible. Charlotte (finished) Since I loved Angel Beats, I’m not sure why I didn’t start Charlotte sooner. Over the last few years, I never recall hearing anything good about it. Normally that wouldn’t deter me. However, when at least three people whose opinion on anime I value didn’t really care for it, I had a hard time believing it was going to be good. I started (and quickly finished) Charlotte recently because I wanted to finish it before the next anime from Key and P.A. Works ended. With that, I finally understood everything. The second half of Charlotte can only be described as a disaster that is memorable for all the wrong reasons. I enjoyed the first half, and had Charlotte stuck to that formula, it might've been a good comedy/drama with supernatural elements. At the start of episode seven, I was surprised by the turn of events, but also interested to see what direction the story would go in. By the end of the episode, it became so stupid that it was unintentionally comedic to a degree. The remaining episodes are just… ugh. Some steps are taken forward, but more are always taken back; it’s a mess that is entertaining to watch at least. One of the few positive aspects of Charlotte is Nao's character. Jun Maeda was so moved by Ayane Sakura's performance as Nao, that he also wanted her to voice the lead heroine in Kamisama ni Natta Hi, or so I've read. The following is all anime that aired as part of Fall 2020. Nine of them I watched as they aired, and the other three (Rail Romanesque, Assault Lily, and Kamisama ni Natta Hi) after every episode came out. I’m going to simplify the format and actually keep things concise this time. Adachi to Shimamura - Well done adaptation of the first four volumes of one of my favorite yuri series. I loved every second, and can only hope for a second season. Assault Lily: Bouquet - For an anime that is based on an upcoming mobile game, Assault Lily has no right to be as good as it is. I mean, it’s not that great, but considering where Assault Lily comes from, it’s a very enjoyable 12 episodes. Shaft must’ve really worked their magic here. Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka? Bloom - I never get tired of GochiUsa, and this was no exception. I will gladly watch as many episodes as they produce. Iwa Kakeru: Sport Climbing Girls - Another disappointment, except this time I never expected anything in the first place. One of the worst of this year along with Maesetsu, Iwa Kakeru checks off all the sports anime clichés while forgetting to be any good in the process. Kamisama ni Natta Hi - “Maeda, you son of a bitch…” feels like an appropriate response to the ending. Many people seem to have strong opinions about Jun Maeda, but I don’t have anything against the guy. I still love Angel Beats, and everyone makes mistakes sometimes (Charlotte). Kamisama ni Natta Hi is still nowhere near Angel Beats for me, but it’s a lot better than Charlotte. Personally, whatever emotional impact Charlotte was supposed to have was canceled out by the idiocy of everything else. That was not the case with Kamisama ni Natta Hi. I thought I was cool for not shedding any tears the whole time… until the ending credits where I completely lost it. Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear - Decent sort of isekai that is kind of similar to Bofuri. It’s not a bad way to pass the time, but it wasn’t interesting enough to the point where it made me want to read the source material. Love Live! Nijigasaki Gakuen School Idol Doukoukai - More Love Live, but it completely ditches the formula seen in the original and Sunshine. While enjoyable, this feels more like an introduction to the characters/set up for the rest. It seems like the best has yet to come, and I strongly hope that it will with at least another season of Nijigasaki. Maesetsu - Massive disappointment. Given that it’s from the same creator as Lucky Star, I had the slightest bit of hope that Maesetsu could be a spiritual successor to it of sorts. For an anime about comedy, it just isn’t funny. On top of that, it’s rather dull, and every episode seemed to go by slow. Even if I hadn’t watched Maesetsu as it aired, I don’t think I would’ve wanted to watch more than one episode per week. Majo no Tabitabi - An episodic adventure that I have mixed feelings about. Sometimes it’s cute, and others the story feels like it would fit right into the lore of a Souls game. Good, but nothing fantastic. I’ve heard the light novel is better, but I’m not sure I care enough to find out for myself. Maou-jou de Oyasumi - A fantastic comedy that takes a done to death setting and does something new and interesting with it; one of my favorite anime from 2020. With or without a second season, I will certainly be reading the manga. Ochikobore Fruit Tart - I didn’t know about Ochikobore Fruit Tart until a few weeks before it aired. It looks cute on the surface, but the comedy in this is anything but “pure” most of the time. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and will gladly pick up the manga at some point. Rail Romanesque - A short anime that goes by so fast, I had no clue what I was watching most of the time. It was okay, I guess? I suppose I’d watch more of it.
Popular Post Masamune
I'm way behind on updating my list, I need to go through & see what I've watched the past 1-2 months. ? For now I'll just post what I watched last night... KonoSuba – God’s blessing on this wonderful world! Movie: Legend of Crimson (complete, enjoyment: 5/5) Loved it, it was just as good (if not better than) the main series, what a great way to start off the new year! First of all the movie is pretty Megumin-heavy (undisputedly the best character in the series ), & secondly, the whole "something is" scene... that could make anyone die of laughter. Yes, those 2 things were enough for me to give it a top score, a true masterpiece. Edited January 3, 2021 by Masamune

Aboelsas
I am currently watching Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO), stumbled upon it on YouTube a while back and love the series. Its funny and talk about some serious psychological topics as he is a novice high school teacher guiding his students about life through I'd say unique methodologies. Great series, highly recommend it if you haven't seen it yet. https://comicvine1.cbsistatic.com/uploads/scale_small/6/67663/3084809-01.jpg Edited January 6, 2021 by Aboelsas picture was not visible after posting
