Dreakon139
Occasionally I hear people pronounce Mario as 'Mare-ee-yo'. Is that a common pronunciation of it? I've always called the adorable plumber 'Marr-ee-yo'.

TranceVance
I was under the impression that it was mostly Americans that pronounced it "Mare-ee-yo". I've always pronounced it "Marr-ee-yo".
Black-Xero
Marr-ee-yo. Always thought that to be the proper pronunciation so I stuck with it.
DaRe
i don't know anyone who pronounces Mario "Mare-ee-yo". when i hear it in the commercials, i think of them as ignorant speakers. "Marr-ee-yo" it is, maybe even "Moh-dee-yo" if you have the accent.

Hitman
Not sure I agree with your makeshift phonetics ( ), but I've always pronounced it 'Maw-ree-o', not 'Ma-ree-o'.

piuytrewqp
Marr-ee-yo since I first saw Super Mario Brothers.
TerminusCross
I just say it in French, ma-ryo. The ma is more Ah! than maw. And the O is not rye o, it's like putting an R in front of yo. Add German R's. Also, fuck people who say rye yoo instead ree yoo. Hadoken.
RHGSniperFox
Both are correct, it just depends where you're from - your dialect. "PoTAYto/PoTAHto, ToMAYto/ToMAHto". The official pronunciation, however, is "Marr-ee-oh". I'm more concerned with how the hell to pronounce names like "Rinoa" and "Tidus".
TerminusCross
Since Tidus's name derives from the word tide (or so I assume, what with all the water theme going on in that game) I always said tide-us. SitusKiss
Another "Marr-ee-oh" here. Loved the original NES game. It's funny how this game (and console for that matter) really had an impact on me, becoming more of a gamer, and I haven't played anything Nintendo since N64, haha. HeyItsSpanky
My wife and I argue about this all the time as she claims to pronounce it "the Italian way". I have always said it the way he taught me from the good ol N64 days... "It's-a-me, Mario"

ShadeSplit
I've always pronounced it Mar-E-O (your second option, I assume), but just about everyone I've come across pronounces it Mah-Re-O (your first option, I assume).
