Trophy Burnout

Recommended Posts

I was curious as to what might cause "trophy burnout" for you all on some or certain games?

For instance, I LOVE fighting games, but going after the trophies in Street Fighter 5 and Marvel vs Capcom Infinite made me unable to enjoy the games for what they were because I was so wrapped up in the hunt! (Especially MvCI, dear GOD that game is soooo hard to rank up in.)

Other games, like the newer Tomb Raider from 2014 or Far Cry 4, might have great solo trophies, but then online co-op/competitive ones kill my passion for getting the plat. Although I DID manage to muddle through the Last of Us and its multiplayer just because that game is in my top 5.

So, my question for you all is, "What causes you to burn out on a game or type of game while trophy hunting?"

Good question, Bushido.  I get burnout when the grinding to achieve a trophy gets monotonous - like I have to do the same repetitive task over and over and over in order to get closer to earning it.  Or worse, if I slip up on some minor thing, all that grind progress gets zeroed out, and I have to start over.  Heh heh, I'm thinking of more than one Final Fantasy mini-game that's brought me to tears.  And I agree with you:  required online play for trophies really grinds my gears too.

Oh man, that's interesting. Because I can enter that "empty state" when I do a task for a trophy over and over again, and I don't mind it too much. But I guess it would depend on the task at hand. What FF mini-game got you so stressed?

It just happens randomly for me...usually when I've played too much in a short period.

That's fair too. I usually have to space out my games. If I drop 5 hours in one day on ONE game alone, I usually don't want to hunt again in that game for another 2-3 days and just work on something else for a bit to ease my mind.

I only really get burnt out after finishing a game that's pretty difficult. A lot of the time after getting a hard platinum I just like to relax and play something on my Wii U or my Super Nintendo and eventually get back into earning trophies in my own time. I've done it twice this year already, after finishing Monster Hunter & Atari Flashback Classics 2.

Im getting burnt out from the hunt

ive been at it for a while now and its making me numb but you gotta keep feeding the addiction am i right? Lol

my platinum anniversary is in a few weeks. (August 12th) I literally have a 6 year platinum streak going, unlocking atleast 1 plat a month, every single month, month after month, year after year, I went from 1 plat to 228 currently, without missing a step, it averages out to about 4 plats a month, some months have been better than others. I started on ps3, then got a ps vita, a launch ps4 and eventually on to my ps4 pro, all of which i still have and use in the name of trophies, ive platted the entire alphabet, have accounts in 4 different regions, i have a backlog of close to 200 games that i havent even touched yet because im a sucker for flash sales.

I told myself back in the day, when i get to 50 plats im going to chill out and go easy and my buddy was like, hit 100 first then take a break. Well those days came and went and im still going at it. Maybe when i hit 300 plats ill kill my streak and take a rest from trophy hunting.

I get trophy burnout ocassionally. Most of the time, it's because I don't really enjoy the game. Other times, it's because the game requires more than 50 hours to platinum.

Once I got trophy burnout when a trophy refused to pop because of a glitch. That trophy cost me almost 10 hours. I didn't play any games for almost 6 months after it happened. ?

Some things. This year has been very rich in examples of what I'd consider deal breakers in trying to get the Platinum trophy. Fortunately, I'm pretty good at noticing when something's just way out of my league, so I'll just give up on the Platinum and move on to the next big thing:

  • Mercilessly grindy trophies. Dragon Ball FighterZ, for instance, requires you to grind the same mindless action for about 80 hours (at minimum!) before you reach the Platinum. Yeah... I have better things to do with my time.
  • Requiring you to have godly skills. Taiko no Tatsujin and Persona 4: Arena Ultimax would require you to not only have the reflexes of Bruce Lee but also the concentration powers of a Buddhist monk. I mean... I don't want to devote years of practice to a game just because of a digital token. I'd never even want to talk about that game ever again.

I almost gave up on Dragon Ball Xenoverse, because of its absolutely infuriating RNG, on Catherine, for being too difficult, and on Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, for having absolutely insane multiplayer trophies (not to mention extremely temperamental servers), but those just grazed against my limits and didn't go beyond them.

I get trophy burnout sometimes during the events and competitions.  I hate rushing through a game to get it done before the deadline, and really don't like going to a guide to help me through.  So I get "trophyitis" and say never again!  Until I join another event.  I also don't really like playing a game I'd never pick up normally, but it fits the theme of the event so I'm kinda stuck.

My cure is to play a game, not part of an event, and just go through it at my own pace, with all the mistakes, knowing I'll have to play through it again (and again).  Not worrying about the 100% or Plat.

Just to let you all know, I used some of these answers in a hobby podcast my buddy and I put together! (It's the very last segment if you're interested in listening.)

Thanks for being so enthusiastic and I look forward to asking more questions that'll be used in our show! :)

I got "Trophy Burnout" last year. For a number of years, I've been spending 100+ hours per game getting plats as they were all JRPGs that I was playing (Tales series, FF). Tales of Berseria took me 120 hours, Xillia 2 was 127, Vesperia was 135, FF12 was 100, ffx-2 was 80... etc. and so on that around last summer, I got burned out. My brother would even walk into the room and say "you've been playing that same game for ages" ...

So after FF12 TZA's plat I started getting into VNs, mostly otome games as they are relaxing, have interesting stories and easy enough plats. My account is JP so every so often they would have a sale for otome games, particularly around Valentines day and Christmas so I'd blow my wallet on a few games on the psn store. I really liked Amnesia V Edition and the 2 fan discs (Later x Crowd and World), Collar x Malice, Steam Prison and my friend bought be code realize for the PS4 when she went to Japan).

I managed to recover from my "burnout phase" and have gradually started going back to my good old RPGs, although I've started out with the shorter ones. Currently I'm working on Nier automata, and plan on going for Atelier Sophie which are both around the 30-40 hour mark before taking a swing at Persona 4 Golden which will indeed need time and dedication.

However, I do now dip in and out of my otome games between the grindy RPGs to keep me sane and from getting bored?

Mainly trophies that are just a boring grind rather than a challenge. Like GT sport, I have all the hard trophies I just need XP lvl 50 to plat it and that requires atleast another 100hrs of grinding,  it's ridiculous.

In the past I had a bad habit of starting multiple games at once amd I ended up getting overwhelmed with my massive back log

I just regained 100% platinum completion after a couple of years.

Well done for getting the Platinum on the entire Final Fantasy 13 Trilogy. Which one did you find to be the hardest one to platinum? I have already got the Platinum for 13-2.

Thanks, Cryo!  I thought 13-2 was the hardest actually.  Most of the trophies were fine.  Even the paradox endings weren't super hard to figure out.  On the other hand, I hated the clock puzzles and the casino trophy was the last one I got because it's so luck-based.  Congrats on you getting the plat though!

More than three required playthroughs (one blind playthrough for the fun, two for completion's sake). If difficulty-related trophies don't stack, it can become very tedious to do more and more playthroughs.

Second thing I hate are speedruns and/or time-to-beat levels required for a trophy.

  • 2 weeks later...

I very rarely start a new game immediately after I platinum or 100 percent the game I was working on.

Sometimes I take up to two days of break before I start on another. That way I don't feel burnt out after finishing a game like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which I spent over 130 hours getting all the trophies and DLC out of the way.
