Tom Lipschultz has just left XSeed.  At least this is a mutual, amicable split.  Tom fought against censorship, & asked that his name be taken out of the Akiba's Beat credits due to some censorship that had been done to that game.  In early 2018, he did talk about his fears of Western localizers censoring Japanese games especially with today's lousy political climate.

Sadly, it seems like Brittany Avery has been let go.  Someone on Reddit has said the guys who focused on Falcom games at Xseed are gone. :(  I'm really concerned about this.

Best wishes for both of them.  Hopefully whoever takes Tom's spot at XSeed will be as anti-censorship as he has been.

I thought there was a italian translation group that was working on a English patch... but they haven't posted anything since then during the last 2 years...

Exactly. In fact, all of their projects sans Xanadu Next stalled and XSEED ultimately beat them to the punch, so they killed their group off altogether.

And at XSEED, Tom was the only one interested in the game, so with him gone the possibility of an official release is also gone.

That group Figli di Gaucci still has their site up. http://www.figlidigaucci.eu/index.php

Yep, looks like they've quit.

Hi everyone

Their localization of Xanadu Next is translated well, but unfortunately there is a bug with the exploding red slimes.  When you kill one, it nukes the entire room & you cannot escape the damage.

I've bought the Japanese disc version earlier & played it with the Figli di Gaucci patch. The bug doesn't happen on that one- a red slime's blast radius is limited & you're safe assuming you get away from it.

Any more censorship and XSEED can kiss my money goodbye, because I won't be buying anything else from them.

Can't blame xseed. Blame Sony's censorship policy!

Why blame a single company when people like Tom have been against censorship on all platforms and the rating criteria of organizations like PEGI and the ESRB? The question is rhetocial. Blaming Sony is the new hot topic on the internet. Hot topics aren't the reason for this long standing issue.

I'm surprised Tom was still there, considering the Akiba's Beat controversy. Still hilarious that everybody - including the Japanese devs, once they learned what the acronym meant - was appalled by the reference, but Tom wanted to die on that molehill that is keeping it. Even after the JP devs changed it because they didn't want something that could be seen as a reference to a hate group in their game.

The rating organizations do suck and there's no need for them. Yes, the question is rhetorical. At the same time, they have released a plethora of games, that have nudity, Sony had no problem with releasing them. All of sudden they introduce a new policy and the game is censored, Sony is to blame for the shitty policy. At the same time, Xseed should've just canceled the localization of the game to protest the policy.

There is a need for rating organizations. They serve the same purpose of any age restricting service, they assuage parents and government organizations by showing some form of control is in place so that a child can't normally buy products that aren't age appropriate. It's the oversight and governance all public media needs to have.

What gets wonky is when publishers preemptively censor/change their products in order to meet a certain rating BEFORE ever getting a review from the ESRB or PEGI.  They want to only have to submit once and not pay for another review or debate the rating given. The additional rules Sony and Nintendo has in place against games rated higher than MA only. Sony is to blame for Sony's policy. However, Sony's policy is not what Tom has been against for all these years.

Oh Okay. You make valid points.

Rating systems are fine assuming the government doesn't butt into them & legislate.  That kind of shit goes on in Japan, where it's a crime to sell a CERO Z (adult only) rated game to a minor.  If anyone polices the sales of games, it should be the retailer alone.  A clerk who fails to deny the sale of an AO rated game to a minor should get a slap on the wrist type discipline by their manager, not a criminal sentence.

Without the rating system, the government probably would do something really bad, like making their own but with the force of criminal law behind it.  Not cool.

Akiba's Beat got censored? Everything I read about that game suggested it was remarkably tame to begin with (certainly more so than Akiba's Trip).

If there's no teeth behind a rating system, there's no reason to have it to begin with. Criminal proceedings are harsh (certainly in the West), but Japan has been pilloried by the world press for its horrible record for child molestation and the like, so it's no surprise that video games become the scapegoat.

Just one thing, a parody on the company NKK Switches was called KKK Witches in the game, they changed it to ACQ Witches. He was so upset about it he had himself removed from the credits
