In case you have no idea what the Guide of the Year Awards are all about, take a look at this thread. Starting today all members of PSNProfiles can nominate any PSNProfiles guides that have been published between December 2 2017 and December 1 2018. During that time exactly 440 guides have been published, a full list of eligible guides can be found at the end of this post. A Quick Breakdown on What to Do Give your pick for guide of the year and a good reason why you like it. Try to nominate at least 3 categories (Though you can nominate 7 categories!) and briefly say why you like those. Use the "List of Eligible Guides" at the bottom of this post for some help with remembering/finding this years guides! The Categories Keep in mind that this year you are allowed to vote for more than one guide. Apart from Guide of the Year, which is of course still the main category, you are finally allowed to give other guides the recognition they certainly deserve. Guide of the Year (nominate 1 guide you thought was the best): All 440 guides published over the past year are eligible for your pick of Guide of the Year. The new categories are (nominate at least 3 categories): Exceptional Walkthrough Guide: A well made, extremely helpful walkthrough of a game or overall trophy list. Exceptional Gameplay Guide: Anything that isn't a walkthrough such as a collectible guide or a supplementary guide Exceptional DLC Guide: Guides for pieces of DLC or patches that add trophies. Exceptional Niche Game Guide: These include guides for indie games, imported games (JP, KR, etc), and non-AAA games. Exceptional Use of Formatting: Some writers make their guide so clean and organized it's like an artwork by making great use of headings, colours, images, etc. Exceptional Quality Upkeep: A writer keeps their guide updated, listens to feedback, & interacts with guide comments (they don't just publish and disappear). Exceptional Use of Original Content: Some writers go the extra mile and make their own videos, images, and combination of these within their guide. Information on Nominating When nominating guides, you are required to give solid reasons for your choice. Nominations without solid reasons won't count. Each member can only nominate 1 guide per category and once your nomination has been added to this post, you can't change it anymore. Nominations will be added to this post at the end of the day. When considering which guide to nominate, try to make a decision based on the quality. Examples of that are: How helpful was the guide? Was it written in a way that was easy to understand? Was the amount of information enough to obtain all the trophies or did you need to search for information yourself on another site? Has the guide been updated with relevant information about patches (or DLCs) in case these were released? Below are some examples of things you should absolutely not take into consideration when nominating: How much you like / dislike the author(s). How popular the game is. How much you liked the game / were hyped for the game. The amount of views / ratings a guide has. Here Are the Rules Starting on December 2nd, the community will be able to nominate guides for the overall top 3 and a guide in each category that are worthy to be considered for the GotY Award. When nominating, a minimum of 4 are required: at least 3 categories and a nomination for the overall top 3. You cannot nominate your own guides! You also cannot use an alternate account of yours to nominate your own guide(s) as well. A few alt accounts have been detected voting for their own guides, and to that we say: This isn't our first rodeo sheriff, the only sly person around these parts is Sly Ripper A special nomination thread will be created on December 2nd. You will be required to give solid reasons for your choices. Every guide published on PSNP between December 2 2017 and December 1 2018 will be eligible, a list will be provided in the nomination thread. Keep in mind that the guide team needs time to review a guide and it may need revisions, so please don't wait until the last day to submit a guide for review. The nomination thread will be closed after two weeks. The top ten guides with the most nominations will go on to the next round. During the next round the PSNProfiles staff (Sly, mods, and the guide team) will pick the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The total number of nominations for guides in the top ten is irrelevant for our decision. The guides which get the most nominations is not necessarily going to win, the staff will review all ten guides and the only thing that counts is quality! Since we don't want to rush this, expect this to take another 2-4 weeks. Due to the added categories, we may even need longer, as this is the first time we're adding new categories. Since the staff will be deciding the winners, their guides will not be eligible! Co-op guides with staff members will be eligible, in case a co-op guide ends up in the top 3, the non-staff writer will get the whole prize. In case a guide has more than 1 writer, the prize will be split between all guide contributors, so long as they contributed a meaningful amount to the guide. So my vote goes to Spyro The Dragon from @F-o-D-Aurora: on the contrary of both other guides of the trilogy, the first one, yet an easy platinum, has explanation within each trophy and a proper video with the time for each level for 100% (this is important), making things easier. I liked that it didn't depend on videos and kept up to date with the differences between the vita version and the PS4 version. There were a few formatting fixes I wished were done to make it easy to come back to the guide, but overall I loved it and would use it again. DLC Guide: Minecraft Expansion 4: I haven't used this one yet, but I remember reading it when it popped up and actually feeling empowered that I could get the remaining Minecraft trophies. I found it helpful that it gave detailed explanations of how to get each trophy and not just a description. Am I allowed to nominate Alien Isolation for guide of the year, or does it not qualify as a walkthrough? This guide is such well-laid out and has such a massive collection of maps that it makes the game more approachable. They could have just relied on the videos, but the creators really took that extra step to break it down for even the worst of us players. The Alien Isolation Trophy Walkthrough is eligible for guide of the year, every guide is! So part of my over-arching reason for nominating the following guides is that they actually proved to be useful and fully accurate. Exceptional Walkthrough Guide: Claire - Full Trophy Walkthrough - Anyone who has played this game knows exactly how large the map is, how little instruction the game gives you on what to do next, and how hard it is to see objects that are blocking your way due to the low lighting. This guide makes it possible to quickly and easily navigate through the entire game without giving away any of the (minimal) story the game offers. All the doors to enter, all the boxes that you can climb, all the locations of the enemies, all the times you should backtrack... just stellar! The platinum would honestly take much longer (I'd say up to 4-5x as long!) without this guide. Also! It provides additional information for the Vita players, who have to do just a little bit more than the PS4 players. Big kudos for pointing out all the variances along the way! Exceptional Gameplay Guide: L.A. Noire - Five Star Case Guide - I think one of the hardest things about writing guides is keeping the spoilers to a minimum. When you're writing a guide that requires you to basically tell the reader exactly what to do to solve every case in a murder-mystery perfectly, it seems like it would be pretty hard to leave out spoilers. This guide, however, gives you near 100% accuracy with everything you need to do to fully solve the cases WITHOUT compromising any parts of the story. It also includes every case, both DLC and base game, which is excellent for those playing the PS4 version as performance in the DLC cases does count toward the base trophy list as well. Note: what I mean by near 100% accuracy isn't that any information was inaccurate, there were just a few pieces of evidence that aren't listed. I think about 5-10 pieces, which isn't a big deal as there are over 300 pieces of evidence in the game and you only need to get 95% of them for trophy purposes. Exceptional DLC Guide: Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom - Adventure DLC Trophy Guide - Though this DLC is only two trophies, they involve considerably harder battles than any that you would come across in the base game. As such, a lot of work needs to be done with your characters in order to get them in DLC fighting shape. Not only does this guide give you explicit instructions on how to obtain these trophies, it also gives you an excellent primer on how to set up your party for maximum effectiveness against the bosses, how to go about leveling up, where to go to farm weapons, and even strategies for the boss fights. This certainly goes above and beyond what a lot of guides would include for what essentially breaks down to a few boss fights. Exceptional Niche Game Guide: Oh...Sir! The Insult Simulator Trophy Guide - Really hate to say this because this game is a POS *nudge nudge*, but the trophy guide made it a bit more bearable. If you played this game, you know that most of the trophies are highly RNG-dependent; this guide will help you find set-ups to skew the RNG in your favor ever so slightly, which makes a world of difference when playing. Additionally, you can tell the guide writer had a bit of fun with this as he throws in various insults from the game along the way; makes for an amusing guide-reading experience. Exceptional Use of Original Content: Burly Men At Sea Trophy Guide - Though one can argue that this game is simple enough not to need a guide, no one can deny the amount of amazing work put into making additional image and video content for this one. The first thing that I'd like to point out is that everything in this guide was made by the creator! I see too many guides that will simply take a helpful YouTube video and place it in their guide while possibly giving credit-- not this writer! He actually took the time to make all the videos themselves, which amounts to 12 different videos for each of the game's endings. And just in case watching videos isn't your cup of tea, there are flow charts and screen captures (also helps that the game has very charming artwork, so seeing it used in the guide is just an extra special treat!). Guide of the Year: Mary Skelter: Nightmares Trophy Guide - This guide could qualify for most of the additional categories, but I feel that it is highly deserving of Guide of the Year. The writing is very clear and to-the-point without sacrificing any important information. The formatting is exceptional, with use of tables, color, bolding, etc to either make things more readable or drive home key, important points. Spoilers are used appropriately! Trophies that require precise steps to be taken are given without any error. In addition, this game is a massive dungeon crawler, with maps of up to 100x100 spaces; the creators took the time to navigate all spaces on over 50 floors of maps and post screenshots of them so that the players could fully see where they need to go. Lastly, any guide which is so detailed that allows a player who is inexperienced with dungeon crawlers (or any genre, really) to achieve a spot on the Top 10 Fastest Achievers board deserves a massive gold star-- or, in this case, a gold Guide of the Year profile badge! Lastly, kudos to all guide writers! Over 400 guides is an amazing achievement in and of itself, and I think everyone should be proud of the work they've done regardless of if you get a nomination! And thanks to @ddracarys for compiling that list... However, I can select one guide that has greatly impressed me and it's the FFIX guide by ARB1992. Even though I disagree with the scripting option mentioned in the guide as it simplifies and diminishes the trophy, there is no doubt in my mind that this guide, written by one person must have taken a tremendous amount of time to not only write a guide that requires so much information, but to also package it in a coherent, helpful guide. I thought this was going to be a lame trophy guide with just a bunch of descriptions, but it really impressed the hell out of me. Excellent formatting and great visuals to go along with it. Best gameplay guide - Final Fantasy IX - collectables/missables guide. Talk about thorough. OMG. I love handholding in guides and this one literally holds your hand as you walk through the game. It really helped me understanding certain missions and chapters. Exceptional Use of Original Content: Burly men at Sea Just like @eigen-space said, the writer made his own roadmap and images for this guide. The roadmap is extremely insightful regarding the trophies that can be earned at certain points within the game. I didn't play this game yet, but i certainly will thanks to this guide. For guide of the year I would like to nominate "Burly men at Sea" I really like the self-made images and more writers should put such effort into their guides I also want to include battlefield 1 turning tides DLC trophy guide for the category DLC guides. The guide has some great explanation on how to complete certain trophies regarding weapon kills. Below are my nominations: Exceptional DLC Guide of the Year: Grand Theft Auto V Online - The Doomsday Heist DLC Trophy Guide. Author: @Jiwan01. The most recent heist in GTA is known to be pretty difficult in terms of trophy obtaining and this guide does a great job with explaining all the intricate steps needed for the elusive Masterminds trophy. Along with that, the formatting is superb and makes it very easy-to-read. Exceptional Use of Original Content: Call of Duty: Black Ops III Trophy Guide. Author: @johncnstntn__. The pictures used in this guide are very well-detailed along with how they're formatted within some of the entries in this guide. These photos make it easy to depict different objects and Zombies within their respective trophy entry. Also, the various amounts of icons for different abilities help with navigation for finding different options within the menus. Exceptional Gameplay Guide: Yakuza Kiwami 2 Minigame Completion Gameplay Guide. Author: @Happy. The Yakuza games are very well known for their large number of mini-games and the requirements of them needed for 100% game completion. This gameplay guide I nominated did a great job at explaining all the mini-games, what they ask of the player for 100% completion. The use of pictures helps depict various things within said minigames that help with figuring out how they work to help the player achieve what needs to be done. Exceptional Walkthrough Guide: Claire - Full Trophy Walkthrough. Authors: @optimusmart and @Optinooby. The overall formatting and use of italicized lettering help make it a lot easier for users to follow what is important and the decisions that need to be made. Also, the colors that are used within the lettering help make things pop out and easier to see the options needed. Exceptional Use of Formatting: Valkyria Chronicles 4 Trophy Guide. Author: @cckerberos. With many missions in this game, it's best to have a map that helps depict everything that needs to be done. This guide goes the extra mile and adds the map to everything along with what each mission asks of the player. Also, the use of many tables in various entries help makes everything easier to read and allows the information to be organized. Exceptional Niche Game Guide: A Hat In Time Trophy Guide. Author: @BritishKingdra. This guide overall does a great job with depicting boss fights with each of their phases. Also, for finding all the time pieces, they have their respective missions well laid out and have a very good description of how to complete each mission. Exceptional Quality Upkeep: Shenmue Trophy Guide. Author: @StacFace92 and they have done a great job replying to peoples' comments and taking advice on how to update the guide in terms of wording and have made sure that all information on the guide was well kept and updated with other user suggestions and any fixes that needed to be made. Overall Guide of the Year Nomination Stardew Valley Trophy Guide Authors: @Jelloycat and @Frosty This guide has it all: Amazing formatting with numerous tables depicting items and other various things needed for each entry. Also, this guide has an exceptional use of icons, pictures, videos, etc for all the minerals, friendships, and so on. The use of colors for various entries help make information stand out and easy to read for users. Guide of the Year - Monster Hunter: World ( @Undead Wolf @Redgrave, @ManaFear, @Golden Devil Gamer) An all around pretty incredible guide that I'm honestly surprised hasn't been nominated yet. It has all the essential information you need to take with you while going into the game as both an expert level Monster Hunter player, or a total newbie. The amount of information and ground that needs to be covered for this game, and with the guide entirely matching that up to a considerable degree, is very impressive. I think it should be praised as one of, if not the best guide of the year. I would also vote for this guide in terms of Best Original Content Use as well, but I don't think you can nominate one guide for two different categories. Exceptional Use of Formatting - Shadow of the Tomb Raider ( @ddracarys, @BlindMango) Definitely one of the most well organized guides to come out this year. While the information presented might not be too overwhelming by any means, such great formatting, organization skills, and writing still makes for a great read. Exceptional Walkthrough Guide - Claire: Full Trophy Walkthrough ( @optimusmart, @Optinooby) I'm throwing this one in there because, while I didn't use many guides this year, this one definitely stood out to me for pure walkthrough skills. It accomplishes everything it needs to tell you from a guide's perspective, as well as from the players, it doesn't lack of any front. It's simple, concise, and thorough.
