Greatest Disappointment of the Year 2018!

I had a few disappointments this year to go with the year's highs (Dragon Quest XI, Persona Endless Night Collection, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Soul Calibur VI, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, etc.)

1. The Walking Dead - The Final Season: Telltale had a chance to end the series on a high, but at the end, the company fell apart before they could give the series the finale it deserved.

2. Fallout 76: This game did not look good as it came together, but I wanted to be wrong. I wanted the game to impress the hell out of me, and I was looking for any possible excuse to play it. Somehow though, the game ended up being worse than I expected, and it's been panned by critics and fans alike. I hope that the team that worked on this game is able to improve the game until its finally playable, à la Final Fantasy XIV and No Man's Sky.

3. Sony: Between their questionable censorship policies (even if I'm not a fan of some of the content being censored), decision to halt Vita cartridge production, refusal to make cross-system play a thing, and decision to remove the PS3 and PSVita from PlayStation Plus next year, Sony as let me down this year. I've been in the Sony camp since 1997, but I honestly wouldn't think twice of jumping over to Google's unannounced system or Nintendo next generation if Sony continues down this path.

4. Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!: Don't get me wrong - these games to a lot of things right. They're beautiful, charming, and some of the endgame content is legitimately challenging. That said though, the game was nowhere near as fulfilling as Pokémon Sun and Moon (my favorite games in the series during my twenty years as a fan) were, and after forty hours with the games, I'd caught them all, beat every trainer (minus 95% of the dumb 'Master Trainers'), and felt very little temptation to go back. Transferring monsters back and forth from Pokémon Go to evolve Meltan to Melmetal is the only reason I'm still playing this periodically.

Sony's new censorship policy..... we should let Sony aware that we don't like this censoring ( especially for games made for adults in the first place and it's selling point is the fan service )

we stay in silent like this and Sony will gonna expand on this censoring to a point in the future where even violence bloody first party games are gonna tuned down and third party games to completely skip Sony's platforms.

Since I don't play a lot of AAA games around launch, there hasn't been a game that has been a huge let down.

So I am going to go with Sony in general.

Sony has been a massive disappointment this year. Their policies are increasingly anti-consumer. As many have mentioned regarding censorship - I mean, when Nintendo has more open policies than Sony, you know you have a problem.

I already feel that Sony abandoned the Vita prematurely, but to stop cartridge production when the console continues to get indie support, and has much life left in Japan, makes no sense - it is like they are trying to erase it from existence, because it refuses to die quick enough for their liking.

Then there is the increasing prices and decreasing service - Plus has become a cash cow for the company, and instead of improving the value, they just keep hacking it back.

Sales have become mediocre - when was the last time we had a decent flash? They couldn't even put up a Black Friday effort.

Overall Sony has dominated this generation and has just stopped caring. Complacency.

So my disappointment is Sony in general.

Just now, I need more BIOSHOCK said:

Game wise nothing much really.

I would have thought it was the lack of more BioShock :awesome:

For me, it was Little Dragons Cafe. I was super excited for it, hoping it would be kind of an Atelier-lite kind of game with cute baby dragons, but instead got a frustrating trophy grind, too much repetition, and not much by way of story.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

I was rather excited when they announced the game earlier this year and even more when I finally started playing it. It is not a bad game mind you but after the great Rise of the Tomb Raider I expected a lot more. I am mostly disappointed with the story, I had hoped for a satisfying ending but it was just a somehow boring tale. Even the gameplay was a disappointment, especially the stealth element. Although I wasn't particular fond of the previous two games when it comes to the combat but at least the firefights were intense and satisfying, here you just hide in the right spot until an enemy comes conveniently your way and push a button. And worse then this was the restriction to the bow for more then half of the game. And just as in the two predecessors the tombs and puzzle were rather weak, just a bit bigger this time around. I didn't even like the big city were you spend so much, it felt so unlike Tomb Raider not to mention that the story around it was nothing but a cliché. Although the antagonist and his motives were rather interesting this time and not such a big joke like the one in the previous game. But the oil rig level was the worst of all, because it was one lame ass Hollywood blockbuster bullshit moment and the worse depiction of Lara in the entire series. All in all it was just a fun game but it fell short in too many ways.

Ni no Kuni II

I haven't played the previous one but I heard and read a lot of good things about it, so I was hoping for a great JRPG. And it started this way, it was fun to explore the world and find new allies even building a new kingdom was entertaining. But it dragged on so long, it all became one blurry mess in the end. Hopefully it will be a much better experience when I play it the second time when they release the final expansion.

And Microsoft for buying Obsidian, shudder to thing what will happen to them. But most of all that I sometimes loose control and something breaks as a consequence. It isn't as bad as it might sound but it continues to piss me off that I still do that.

We had some great games in 2018, but some, although not terrible, just weren't what we expected or wanted them to be.

What game let you down in 2018?

My personal choice is BATTLEFIELD V.

After logging in 1000+ hours in BF 1, I could barely get through BF V, I got plat and got out!

Agreed on BF V, Fallout 76, and Sony for cancelling PSX and the E3 2019 press conference, and the censorship bullshit.

Sony. Forcing censorship just feels in line with what governments want these days (article 13, the UK's attempt at banning pornographic content overall unless you have a license, etc.) rather than what the consumer wants. And for what benefit? It's only affecting a few games and the stuff that's being censored is mild at best, plus the games that are being censored are generally niche titles anyway where the audience going in knows exactly what they're getting and expects it to be there.  What are they trying to prove?

Also Sony's handling of the Vita. Again. Like every year since it was announced, pretty much. It's a great little console but they just can't stop trying to murder it.

Oh and people complaining about PS+ this coming month. Between Steins;Gate, SOMA, Iconoclasts and Papers, Please I'd be highly surprised if at least one of those doesn't make it worth your cash, I have high hopes for P,P and the other three are all fantastic games and worth your time as well.

On the contrary, I'll soon be getting my hands on the JP ps3 version and I can plat and 100% my all time favourite game for a 3rd time :) but yes it's shit that we have no new bioshock you ain't wrong..... Another disappointment of this year, as well as there being way to many over sensitive flanges now. And that we literally have to tell people NOT TO EAT washing machine detergent.

Are you talking about the new Senran Kagura game that was delayed in North America because Sony forced Marvelous to censor the dressing room?

I'm talking about too many games to mention, from outright refusal to release Omega Labyrinth, to removal of modes from SK through to light obliteration of CG work in numerous VN.

To be honest, Ni no Kuni 2. The first game was a masterpiece and after waiting all these years for the 2nd one, we got a good game with a completely different system, but not one that will be remembered.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth Hackers Memory... Basically the same game as the first with the exact same map levels, functions, system and everything. They just changed the story to be different and added some new digimons (like 50 more plus the first 250). I had no idea they would do this and was disappointed that it was so lazy.

Ni No Kuni 2 was such a letdown, a hilariously bad story, uninteresting characters and NOTHING left what makes the first one so great. I still kinda liked it but compared to the first one... yeah I'm with you on that :-/

The rise of Battle Royale games and poorly tacked on multiplayer in games that should focus on their single player experience

I was disappointed when I joined a battle royale game in RDR2 on the first day of online. Can't believe they chose to include such a bs mode there too

Yes and the boss battles were too easy! Do you remember how hard the squid was or the genie in the first game? The scary dark magician Shazar, white wizards and the boss queen? First game was really epic.

I beat the first red dragon in NnK2 without problems. The rest were a joke too. Was ashamed of convincing my friend to buy NnK2 when I saw how easy this game was compared to the first

Destiny 2

While the game has been improved with the Forsaken expansion this year, D2 never fully recovered from the missteps of Year 1. The player-base is smaller and not as dedicated as in Destiny 1 as a result.
