They aren’t empowered to ban anything. They are simply not allowing it on their system.

Sony can’t tell a developer what to put in their game - if they want to fill it with pseudo-paedophilic nonsense, anime sexual-harrassment simulators and peeping-tom fantasies, they can. They can make that game and sell it anywhere they want -  they just can no longer sell it on Sony’s platform.

The whole ‘think of the kids’ arguement is applicable in a sense, but the interpretation that some an this site have of Sony’s position is not what these kind of standards are about.

It’s far less personal, and - ironically - far more cynical than than that.

Sony aren’t trying to play parent to a bunch of people’s children, or mollycoddling or infantalising their user base with a ‘we-know-best’ approach. Sony doesn’t give a fuck about that. What they do give a fuck about, is keeping their nose clean from a legal and PR prespective.

Sony as a corporation doesn’t care if your kid sees some inappropriate stuff.

They also don’t care if your kid gets molested by a pervert who is obsessed with anime porn.

(I mean, I’m sure most people in the organisation sincerely hope that doesn’t happen, but as a corporation, that isn’t their problem.)

What they do care about, is ensuring that when some guy does rape a child and get’s put on trial, that a bunch of stories don’t end up in the news cycle about “Pervert Obsessed with Sony Playstation Animated Rape Fantasies” - which is exactly how sensationalist media would frame it.

The damage that kind of thing does far outweighs the relatively minor hit they take from weebo’s for banning that stuff from their platform.

Banning some content from a single platform that your company owns isn’t censorship.

As a consumer, you don’t have to like it, but it’s not censorship.

It’s just business.

Do I really need to clarify that Sony banning it on their system doesn't mean its banned everywhere (except in the case of oe Sony exclusive and any moving forward) ? I hope people aren't so stupid as to assume that. I've even said these games that aren't allowed on PS4 are completely unviolated on Switch.

Are Sony concerned with PR or are they on a morale crusade? Who cares, the result is the same. Given this only happened when Calafornia took control would indicated the latter likely plays a part though. Either way its completely insulting bullshit

Damn this was truly a trash year.

Didn't like the direction Gow took, don't like the new Spiderman at all and feel it lives only on publicity, both from being a Sony exclusivity and Spiderman being an huge brand, RDR2 had o get the  usual cashgrab from the online, Fallout 76 and Battlefield 1 are a disaster and developers don't even care enough about it, conversely it's a disaster that a game like Let's go p/e who shits on the metagame got  this popular,  Dragon Quest  11 was good but it's hardly on par with DQ8 (especially the 3ds version)  Square Enix cancelled the dlcs from ffxv and it's on a terrible streak, especially with their Dissidia nt  horror,  and now we have to hope KH3 will be succesful and wait 10+years for another mainline FF

I think I covrred anything? Wow, what a bad year. Oh Diablo stuff but I don't know much about the franchise.

Do you even like video games? Lol...... I’m very disappointed that square skipped  FF8 again

One of the lowest points was when people made a petition to change the Mein Leben trophy for a much easier platinum.

I almost forgot about that! When was that again?

That was just a completely embarrassing situation to be honest. I'm not a trophy hunter but if I were I'd be pretty upset about how it made trophy hunters looks like whining entitled little brats. It's bad enough you guys already get some unfair negative stereotypes and hate from the outside, that just added to things.

For me it was Monster Hunter World. Don't get me wrong, MHW is a good game, but it's a really disappointing MH game. I played it for a couple of weeks, and I was already done. For a MH game, that is just really disappointing. I played MHFU for YEARS and still never did everything. I kept trying to come back to MHW with the updates, but each update was only enough to keep me busy for maybe a day or two. And after a couple of updates, I just stopped caring. I really just wish they had put more content in the game at launch.

Also, I find that people complaining more about the state of games than anything in this thread is absolutely hilarious. I've been saying that the gaming industry was headed this way for years, and that supporting games with microtransactions and "DLC" would only make things worse and worse. And yet here we are with things like "games as a service", where games get released before they're done and you have to deal with all kinds of bugs/glitches and you have to wait months/years for the whole game to get slowly released. All while having to pay double or more than the base price of the game.

Giving developers license to be anti-consumer by buying unfinished and broken products, then continuing to pay more and more for them, leads them to do whatever they want. Because they know people are just going to complain, and then continue to buy their products anyway. Like Sony is doing with their new censorship policies. They know everyone is going to complain, but then ultimately keep buying their games. The only way to fix the industry, is to stop supporting these anti-consumer practices. Don't like the new censorship policies? Sell your PS4 and get an X1 or Switch instead. Don't give Sony any more of your money. Don't like "games as a service"? Stop supporting any game that announces a season pass, DLC, or any kind of microtransaction. Developers will be forced to start putting out complete games at launch again, because otherwise they won't be making any money. And at the end of the day, that's all these companies care about. They will always do the absolute minimum to guarantee them the most amount of money.

Guys, act like adults and discuss things without the insults. If I have to delete any more posts then I'm going to start issuing warnings. I try my hardest to let people discuss things without jumping in and moderating, even if arguments get a little heated, but have some respect for your fellow man. If you can't disagree with someone without insulting them personally, then you shouldn't post.

My greatest disappointment this year is developers like DICE and Bethesda losing focus on games as as fun interactive artwork where they use to push things such as story, sights, sounds, lighting, immersion, and graphical fidelity to incredible limits, and instead now shift focus on lousy, generic, and "safe" multiplayer trends and political agendas.

This video for example covers when DICE was firing on all cylinders in my opinion, when their focus on the fun in gameplay was incredible. They wanted to make a game to the core and push every aspect of it to the absolute limit, and EA gave them time to do it.

I do that already for most games. It is very rare that i buy a game on Day 1, i usually just wait the year for the complete edition. You are right it has been heading this way for years, it is sad when a games gets announced and the first thing people ask about is a season pass.

I don't require medications.  This thread asks for subjective opinions, if one cannot check his/her victim complex  and resorts to call others troll or even going as far as saying I have some kind of agenda for not liking these "masterpieces" like him/herself then yeah, you need to be checked, no amount of fishing for easy likes  or liking every game that gets released can heal you from that

I was just suggesting we take some medications and not because we need it. I don't think there are any masterpieces this year and after gaming for decades there's only a few games that I would consider a masterpiece. I don't think anyone here thinks you have an agenda of any kind as everyone here is a gamer and most with multiple consoles and allot of experience. Check your post, it's how you said it that hit a nerve with someone, it finished suggesting you had more to complain about but couldn't be bothered. It doesn't matter at the end of the day, you're of course allowed an opinion. And actually I don't care, 2 of the games you mentioned I thought are pretty over rated.

I'm mostly just sad that there's no longer going to be any vita and PS3 games for plus next year. I'm usually pretty careful about which games I buy and most of them end up just sitting anyways so I haven't really been disappointed in that regard...that I know of yet lol.

Personally the worst thing about this year gaming-wise is that my cat who was the best gaming buddy in the world passed away before we hit 50 platinums on this profile. Spiderman was our last together.

Everyone's so upset atm, we can't all like the same things. Someone mentioned this, Google "wolfenstein 2 mein leben" and you'll see the most requested question is "wolfenstein 2 mein leben Patch" . I don't get why anyone wanted a patch, these kind of trophies are the most fun to go for in my mind. Forget plats, I'm on new order atm in Uber mode completely aware  that there's an easy way around it. If so many people hadn't have glitched New Order then Mein Leben wouldn't exist. That was a disappointment of 2018.

For me, definitely the way Sony has thrown the Vita down in the toilet and pulled the flush...

Wow... Maybe it's just time for you to simply quit videogaming for a while ;-)

Rofl. Nah, it's cool, I liked 2017's batch and I have high hopes for DMC5, KH3 (though as I stated, Square is doing too much blunders lately and I'm afraid what'll happen to the company if this keeps uo, BUT due to the hype KH3 should help. I hope)and Borderlands 3, whenever they plan to release it.

Spider-Man. The open world is full of tedious chaff and generic nonsense, the plot is incredibly predictable and poorly paced (perhaps a side effect of being everyone else's origin story in which we all know where they're gonna end up so why bother dicking us around), the stealth is laughably easy, the combat annoying (cos the dodge prompt happens before enemies attack, not as, meaning you can dodge too early if you're in the zone and reading their movements and who wants that), and I don't know who decided the best way to add variety in a game about movement speed and agility would be to play Pipe Dream minigames and playing as characters who can't do more than walk slowly forward to grind the pace to as awful a halt as possible, but I'm waiting for them behind the tire swing after school to "have a conversation" with them.

I'll give them the web-swinging, though. They did that well.

I didn't have much disappointments as I enjoyed all the remakes, but Little Dragon's Cafe was my biggest disappointment. I really love the Harvest moon games and always have looked forward to a new one each year, but they had nothing for like 2 years and then brought this game, which was bad in many ways... the main thing I hated was the lack of dating and marriage. Also, the game system with the cafe was unbalanced and annoying.
