2TB isn't enough, unless you intend to play only about 30 games.

Getting a 6TB minimum is at least future proofing your system if you like to buy more games than you'll ever have time to play.

I said at least. I did not say anything more.

6 TBs is overkill. Unless you have a bunch of games like Gran Turismo Sport that take up 70 - 100+ GBs of space, you should be fine.

I advise to delete your AAA games if you're not going to play them anytime soon.

I updated and it bricked my PS4. I get the SU-30631-3 error which says it “cannot install update”. Sony support have told me I need to reinitialize the console, which would mean me losing all my saves (I turned off auto-backup after the kids played some of my games and their auto-saves deleted mine...).

They’ve also told me getting a new console to transfer the data wouldn’t work.

I don’t completely trust them - has this happened to anyone else or am I indeed shit out of luck? Even the reinitialization doesn’t seem to work for some other people...

Not sure if I can blame Sony’s update or if it was just bound to happen...

Didn't this happen back when 6.02 came out?

Not sure.

I wish they at the very least allowed for a safe mode access to the console so yiu can back up games and saves...

Did you try updating from safe mode? That's what I'm having to do, but I had a different error from yours.

Oh I tried everything. Updating through wifi from safe mode, through a stick from safe mode, initializing with the bossted up update, nothing works.

I truly believe the issue rests with the update since initializing without the patch works just fine. Of course, I can’t log in to my account, access all my downloaded games, etc., so it’s sort of pointless. I’ll wait until the next patch comes out and try again. I was told I would need to send it to be checked by a specialist, which at $99 + tx + shipping won’t be that far off from what the bundles will on Boxing Day...

Mostly, though, it’s all those saves that i regret the most. I know very well it will be too disheartening to start many games from scratch. Sigh. Oh well. A good reason to stop collecting trophies I guess.

(Sorry for the vent. It’s cathartic.)

Sorry to hear. That definitely sucks. :( You can't pull saves off on a USB? I mean, under normal circumstances I know you can. Not sure if you're prevented from doing that somehow.

Jesus. You're telling me 2 Terabytes isn't enough space for your saves? That's just greedy. Try uninstalling games you don't play anymore. I have a typical PS4 with 500 GBs and I currently have only used half of it.

No, you need to have access to the console in order to back up saves...

I have an external 4Tb drive on top of the 500Gb and they’re both full. I don’t even have that many AAA games, and I delete games I’ve finished (and that my family win’t play)! It’s called the curse of the ever expanding backlog...

You know you don't have to install them until you want to play them though right? Lol. Or are you one of those playing 10 games at once! When I've got the plat or comoleted/got bored of the game it's off my hard drive immediately, can't stand clutter!

So you start lots of games but don't finish them, then start more? Lol, I think your issue might be a limited attention span rather than limited storage! Guess we all play games in our own way though, I can't have more than two being played at once.

sound's about right xD

only have fallen behind on the ps4 because I am trying to play too much at once and since i'm usually tired after work I tend to lose interest in a challenge until I have a few days off. But in saying that, if I was to just ignore that and just play those games I could probably clear the log by February only playing here and there.

Welcome from down under^ I'm easily playing 10 games at once and 2TB internal plus 2TB external isn't enough. I'm constantly deleting disc games to install new titles, it is a curse of the backlog. I have thousands of games and systems dating back to the 2600, the backlog is not exclusively Sony.

I too get by with the typical 500 GB model. I have run out of space, but only because I have multiple games up that I haven't played (often in years).

Out of the 8 TB I have total, I've used 7 of that over the course of two years. There's no such thing  as enough space.

Sorry if you have tried this already but I recommend it if you have not...

How to Rebuild Your PS4 Database
  1. Turn off your PS4 using the power button on the front of the device.
  2. Hold the power button down and wait for two beeps. ...
  3. Connect your PS4's DualShock 4 controller to the console using a compatible USB cable.
  4. From the Safe Mode menu, choose option five, Rebuild Database.

Thank you for the suggestion, but you cannot rebuild the database when an update is pending... Just found that out myself.

6TB seems overly excessive. You don't need to install something if you have no plans to play it anytime soon.

I bought a 2TB to replace the 500GB Internal back in 2015 and it's served me perfectly. I have 37 games installed right now and still have over 700GB left to use. But I also don't install something until I'm either ready to play it, or ready to play it soon-ish, so 6TB would be absolute overkill...I wouldn't even be considering that much for the PS5 (which I bet money will come with a 1TB at launch...quote me on it)

Providing an update just in case someone does a search for the error code in the future: changing the hard drive did not accomplish anything. From what I read, there may be a problem in the logic board. On the plus side, it had me pull out my PS3 from storage. On the other hand, I had hoped to skip the PS4 Pro and go directly to a 5, and that may not happen...
