Popular Post Dragon-Archon
Credit to @Shana Alter for turning the banner into a gif. What's up PSNP community! Welcome to the fourth annual New Year's Contest. The new year is approaching and so are a lot of new releases. With many of us having a (huge) backlog that weighs on the conscience, why not pretend to do something about that . What better way to do exactly that than to hold a contest. Even if you don't have a backlog, feel free to join. The contest will start on January 1 2019 at 12 AM (00.00) and end on January 31 2019 at 11.59 PM (23.59). The timezone we'll be using is GMT-8. Here's a countdown timer that shows exactly when the contest will start and another one that shows when the contest will end. Only members that have signed up before the start of the contest can participate. The members who have the most points at the end will win this contest and obtain a prize. The member with the highest score gets to choose first, followed by the runner up, etc. The prizes for this year are: a PSN Card with a value of 10 dollars/euros/1,000 yen. - Lojtana claimed this prize. a PSN Card with a value of 10 dollars/euros/1,000 yen. This prize is provided by @Mah2c - WarpedSaviour claimed this prize. a PSN Card with a value of 10 US dollars. This prize is provided by @Kent10201 a PSN Card with a value of 10 US dollars. This prize is provided by @eigen-space - Willreaper41 claimed this prize. a PSN Card with a value of 10 British pounds. This prize is provided by @Deadpool--Rik I'd appreciate it if participants could provide some feedback about things they like, dislike, or things that should be changed at the end of the contest. Winners The winners of NYC2019 are: @Willreaper41 with 2,668.30 points @Lojtana with 2,442.13 points @Warpedsavior with 1,901.01 points @Mesopithecus with 1,805.65 points @TugaSonic 1,719.37 points What's New? This year there are a few changes: You've probably already noticed this, but the banner now changes colour. After 3 years fellow member xZoneHunter is sitting this one out. However, Kent10201, Deadpool--rik, Mah2c, and eigen-space have donated a prize. The time zone used to be GMT+1, but starting from this year it will change as it would otherwise only benefit/inconvenience the same people from other time zones. To help me out with the scores, participants are required to keep track of their points in a google spreadsheet. This requires a gmail account, which should be easy to create. More about this below. Rules What's a contest without some rules: Only obtaining a platinum trophy will yield points, bronze, silver, and gold trophies do not. Cheating to unlock trophies will result in an immediate ban (which also includes being banned from any future New Year's Contests). Auto-popping games using cross-saves won't count for points. Since Kingdom Hearts III will be released on January 29 2019, every Kingdom Hearts platinum counts for double points. Sound Shapes doesn't yield any points. Games that have already been started prior to the event will yield points, but only for the percentage that has been earned after the contest starts. Unlike last year games without platinum trophies won't yield any points. By signing up you agree to keep track of your scores in a spreadsheet and post the link here in the thread after the contest has ended (or earlier, if you want). Yes, this will take you a bit of time, but it'll also help me tremendously. A setup can be found here, so you can copy it and just fill it out. Point System This part may be a bit confusing, but I'll do my best to explain it as clear as possible. The point system has been tweaked to make things fairer. Participants get points based on the plat rarity, and playtime. The rarer the plat and the more time it takes to complete games, the more points it's worth. This is to compensate for quick and easy games in order to give everyone a fair chance at the prize and to encourage people to play whatever is in their backlog. Note that, unlike last year, platless games do NOT yield any points. This is the formula that's used to calculate the points: Total score = (100-plat rarity) x playtime multiplier x (1 - [points unlocked prior to the start of the contest / total trophy list points for the main game]). Since this formula can be difficult for some people to calculate, a link to a prepared spreadsheet has been provided. That way, you can copy or download the spreadsheet, add some information to it, and the formulas will calculate everything for you. To make my job easier, it's required that participants keep track of their scores and post a link to the spreadsheet. That would help tremendously and will also speed up the results. This will require a gmail account, which is very easy to create. Plat Rarity Plat rarity is based on the PSNP rarity on February 1. Playtime Multiplier The playtime multiplier is based on a guide's estimated time to complete it. PSNP guides will be used whenever possible. In case there isn't one on this site, a guide from pst.org will be used. Should that site also don't have a guide, other sites can be used, even guides on Steam or Xbox guides (though a guide for the PS version will take precedence over an Xbox/Steam guide in case it's available). In case there's not a single guide in existence the estimated time from Howlongtobeat will be used as a last resort. The multipliers are: <10 hours: 0.5 10-19 hours: 1 20-29 hours: 2 30-39 hours: 3 40-49 hours: 4 50-59 hours: 5 60-69 hours: 6 70-79 hours: 7 80-89 hours: 8 90-99 hours: 9 100-109 hours: 10 etc. Point Penalty To prevent people from preparing platinum trophies and pop them all once the contest has started, a point penalty will be included. This penalty is identical to the percentage that has been completed prior to the start of the contest. If a game has DLC, only the percentage of the base game will be included. To calculate point penalty of a game with DLC, start by looking at the amount of trophies. Sony assigns points to each trophy: = 15, = 30, = 90, and = 180. First, add up all the bronze, silver, and gold trophies from the base game. The platinum trophy is never used to calculate the completion percentage on PSN. Afterwards, add up all the trophies you've unlocked prior to the start. This can easily be checked by sorting the order of the trophy list on Date. Afterwards divide the points of the trophies earned by the total points of the base game (remember without the platinum trophy). Take a look at the screenshot below for an example: It shows that Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance has been started and also shows 10% has been completed. Besides that, it shows the game has 55 trophies. Since there isn't any DLC, these all belong to the base game. Excluding the platinum trophy, the game has x2, x5, and x47, which equals 1,035 points. The value of the trophies popped so far is 105 points, which means that the point penalty would be 105 / 1,035 = 10.14% which comes down to 10% when rounding down to zero decimals. DLCs In case a game has DLCs, it will count, but only if you obtain the plat and all the DLC trophies after the contest starts. This is very important, so I'm going to say it again. DLCs only count if you obtain both the platinum trophy and ALL DLC trophies after the contest has started. If even 1 DLC trophy has been obtained prior to the start, it won't count. That's because it would be a drag to adjust the point penalty. Completing every DLC will have 2 benefits: You can add all the estimated time of the DLCs to the playtime multiplier. You can use the 100% completion percentage instead of the plat rarity. This is the green number below the plat rarity. In the image below the plat rarity would change from 2.81% to 0.62% Bonus Games Since Kingdom Hearts III will be released in January 2019, every Kingdom Hearts game with a platinum trophy (both PS3 and PS4 versions) will be worth double points. These games are: Kingdom Hearts Final Mix Kingdom Hearts Re;Chain of Memories Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance Kingdom Hearts III (assuming it'll have a platinum trophy) Participants This section will list all the participants that signed up. Wouldn't it be more useful to provide users a link to the already prepared document and just tell them to use the option to create a copy of the spreadsheet? IIRC it's somewhere in the File-menu. Requiring users to enter the formulars on their own is error-prone and IIRC the formulas in a Google Spreadsheet are localized depending on the user's language settings.

Spider5786
I'm certainly up for this again. I doubt I'll make much of a dent on my backlog, but at least this provides some motivation.
Caju_94
I know I won't make it to the top, but I guess I will challenge myself during the month of January, then! First of all, just a question/suggestion: Have you considered extending the end date to February. I know it is a New Year's Contest and it makes more sense to make it during January only. Still, I guess that maybe some players (including me) have some difficulties in getting many platinums from 0% completed games during a sole month, mainly with bigger games. Sometimes I can only play 1 hour per day and sometimes during the weekend I really can't. (Even though I've been able to play more lately) Meaning if I participate, I will probably have some points penalty because I will probably platinum games I already started. If I start a game, they will probably be short. Anyhow, BRING IT!

Also, welcome to the contest. Btw @BlindMango I was unsure if this thread should be in the giveaway section as not all the previous NYC threads are here. Some are in the event section. Myu
I won't be participating this year, mainly because I need to save my Vita plats for the Vita's 7th anniversary event and January will be solely devoted to tackle as many Vita games from my backlog as possible. But I wish every participant good luck and I hope you'll enjoy this event to the fullest
Xx-KingOFDark-xX
Count me in. I have a few games I'm planing to play and a few that I just didn't bring myself to platinum. Some of them have 20 trophies left, some 3 - 8 and some just 1 left. But I guess these unfinished games will have the penalty applied to them. Milktastrophe
You can add me to the list. After all, someone's gotta take last place to make everyone else feel better.

If there aren't a lot of participants, I might extend the contest duration to the end of February. GTA_Darren
Help me understand this formula "Total score = (100-plat rarity) x playtime multiplier x (1 - [points unlocked / total trophy list points for the main game])". Using Uncharted: The Lost Legacy as an example. If I unlock all the trophy, I will get 1-(1230/1230)=0. That means my total score will be 0. That last part (the point penalty) is only if you've started the game prior to the start of the contest. Games that are started afterwards don't have that.
