Job Simulator :platinum: Platinum Proprietor

April 23, 2020

It's sort of weird to be working from home, and then pop a squat and play a game where you simulate a job. But then again these are sort of weird times, and that makes this feel all the more appropriate. This was a fun, easy, mostly brainless game that I had way too much fun with, especially when it came to dancing to the music and throwing things at people. And setting them on fire, making them bigger, shredding them, pretending to eat them... And it was the perfect excuse to set my VR back up after months of it being unplugged post moving into my new place. Plus it was on sale! I would have liked it to be longer, and with more things to discover in each level, but for what it was I enjoyed it!

Plus Mark of Kri was making me mad, so I needed a break again. I love that game, but some of those damn those Arena Challenges kinda make me want to pull my hair out.

Deponia :platinum: Deponia Unlocked!

April 27, 2020

You know, they've put Freddie Fish, Pajama Sam, and other Humongous Entertainment games on Steam and I hope they do the same eventually with the PSN because god damn I loved those game growing up. Those edu-tainment, puzzle laden point and click games were my absolute jam, which makes it all the more astonishing that I was basically an adult when I discovered Lucas Arts and Sierra. If I had to choose a favorite genre, it'd be point and click. So Deponia has been something on my radar for quite some. And then, wouldn't ya' know it, the whole collection went on sale! And I didn't buy it. And then the whole collection went on sale again! Annnnd I didn't buy it. Then they announced that Freddie Fish and Pajama Sam were on Steam. And I totally caved. And I'm genuinely glad that I did, because it's extremely fun and very enjoyable. It scratched that twenty year itch, and I'm extremely excited to play the next three games and see where the whole ark goes!

And yes, if they do put Humongous Entertainment games on the PSN I'm buying all of them, and will live my best nostalgic life.

A Fisherman's Tale :platinum: Explorer at the Edge of the World

May 3, 2020

I've really been on a kick of happening across these truly charming, and wonderfully fun games. And I love a VR game where there is always something to look at, always something to do, always something happening. That first moment where you look up in the room and see the infinite upward lighthouse was what VR was made for! There are so many games on the VR that could so easily just not be - kind of like with 3D movies, it feels like it's there just to get the word out. But this was perfectly crafted for VR, and had a heartfelt story that I didn't anticipate at all. Well worth the money, and I highly recommend it!

Chaos on Deponia :platinum: Platinum Chalice

May 5, 2020

Oh my God these games! I continue to be so glad that I bought the whole collection, and this took the foundation from the first game and continued to build from there. And it housed more of those silly point and click tropes that I adore. The second the game was over, I started downloading the next. I get the feeling when it's all said and done I'm going to find myself in quite the game-hole where I don't know what to play next because I didn't want it to be over yet! And I loved that they leaned more into what a rotten bastard Rufus is, even to the point he had that Bart Simpson-esque twist where it turns out the 'bad guy' isn't nearly as bad as Rufus is! Plus it gave me the perfect excuse to not actually do any work today and just goof off and play videogames. I shouldn't have, but screw it.

Goat Simulator :platinum: All The Goat!

May 9, 2020

I mean what is there to say about Goat Simulator that hasn't been said already? I mean, other than that I thought the Flappy Goat trophy was going to make me rage super hard, and it didn't. And in fact if you take advantage of the frame rate dropping when you stack multiple goat modifications on top of each other and keep in mind to never double tap triangle, it's a lot easier than this same mini game in something like Yooka-Laylee for sure. Lean into the skid is a phrase that comes to mind for Goat Simulator for sure haha! If it's going to act broken, make it more broken and break it in your favor.

Goodbye Deponia :platinum: Platinum Chalice

May 15, 2020

Good crappin' Christ, working health care right now is very busy business - even when you're just management who is working 90% from home. And this week alone has been a mine-field of shit. So while I'm sitting in my office on yet another teleconference, listening to information that could have easily been in an email, I'll update this here! Goodbye Deponia! Man, if you thought Rufus was a miserable bastard before this entry, you're really going to think it now. Endangering children, ruining new love, selling a woman into slavery... My God! Doing those things to get to the end of the game was the most "Would you kindly" actions taken since Bioshock - you don't want to do them, but you have to so you can get the doohickey you need to combine it with the whatsit so you can progress! But once again it was a lot of fun, and a lovely romp around Deponia/etc, which lent itself to a lot more world building than I would have expected from a silly game series like this. I'm excited to see what happens next in the story, but after playing three basically in a row, I need a little bit of a break haha! I picked up Lego DC Super Villains and Yaga while they were both on sale, and I think once I get through all the content of a Lego game, I'll be ready to round out the series for sure!

DLC 1f4af.png Aquaman Movie Part 1 | Aquaman Movie Part 2 | Batman: The Animated Series | Shazam Movie Part 1 | Shazam Movie Part 2 | Young Justice Animated Series

BOOM. I really didn't think this would happen tonight but hey low and behold here we are, a 100%'d Lego later. I mean what can I say about a Lego game that hasn't been said before? I like that the Hub Challenges this time around have hints that you can access in the menu, and I always like the Lego games that are a little bigger and a little more (adulty? I guess that's the word I want you use) than the other ones; I guess Lego The Incredibles left me wanting more since it was not only smaller and easier but also kinda lame (>implying that Lego games can be super cool). It also encouraged me to finally watch Shazam, which I really enjoyed and highly recommend! Also Joker, but that's less Lego related and more I was watching DC so I just kept that train a-rollin'. If absolutely nothing else it gave me something to look forward to yesterday when I was working an almost 20 hour shift. Health care in America is a real bitch right now.

Needless to say, next up we're gonna 'round out the Deponia series!

Oh baby it's a double! I've been slowly working on both of these games for awhile, aided by the fact I was waiting to platinum these until after Gaming by Numbers started and also by the fact that I've been row row fightin' the powa' at work for the last three weeks because of their abusive tactics to keep direct care specialists, who are proving health care to adults, in the dark about what their rights are since it's a non-union gig. Also yesterday was my first day off in life a month. ANYWAY...

Neptune's Spatula :platinum: SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom

July 5, 2020

So I mean, Battle for Bikini Bottom is a classic, for sure. I played the hell out of this game when I was a kid and is absolutely one of those games that I've played maybe a dozen times. When this was announced, I thought it was just a meme and let me tell you how stoked I was when I realized that it wasn't a goof, it was reeeeal. And then of course a 'let's play' channel I like played through it and just made me so much more excited. I literally planned a day off around it coming off. And then there was a breakdown in the delivery chain getting it to stores, thanks to Covid, and I just had to have a physical copy. And it was worth it! For the most part anyway. Unfortunately, there are some crazy platinum-ruining bugs especially around Golden Spatulas registering as being gotten when they're not, and some registering as not counting. For me, it was in Flying Dutchman's Graveyard where it happened, but it seems to happen all over the place. Hopefully THQ patches it quickly, but thankfully I was able to pretty easily figure out where the problem is but for some people they either go all the way back through every level or start over entirely. But up until that point, I really loved going back through it, and relieving those beautiful memories of protecting Bikini Bottom from the robot scourge.

Deponia Doomsday Unlocked! :platinum: Deponia Doomsday

July 5, 2020

If you like the Deponia games and you like SOMA, you're really going to like this one. It BY FAR has the grindiest trophy of them all, with the 1001 Jackalopes trophy, which is such a monumental pain in my ADD havin' ass, but like the other Deponia games there's nothing really impossible or out of the ordinary here. And, all in all, I think it ended exactly as it needed to, and really was a perfect way to cap off the series as a whole. I know there are people saying there should be a fifth game, but I'm satisfied completely. Maybe that's because I played them all in a pretty short period of time. But that's all she wrote on the Deponia series! Four sizable point and clicks that entertained and delighted for months on end. Even if you do have to murder a group of sentient peanuts in an engine, to make a sandwich, to get a magazine.

Grand Master of Trophies :platinum: Lego Ninjago Movie: The Video Game

July 13, 2020

So let's be honest, I only played this because it was free and because it fit a number for Gaming by Numbers. But I will say, it charmed the pants off of me and it was actually fun - normally I can't play Lego games this close together because so many of them are just the same things over and over, and most of the games are just a repeat of the formula of previous ones (I still love them though). But this one is one of the few that changes it up, and it made it really refreshing! It was super easy - but let's be honest, it wasn't made for someone in their late 20s - but still not quite as bland and watered down as Lego Incredibles. It actually made me want to watch the movie, which is also saying something because I've never given a shit about anything Ninjago related at all. Though, it's probably helped by the fact that the cutscenes of the game are likely pulled directly from the movie. It's always hard to be mad about a free video game, but it's always a pleasant surprise when it's actually enjoyable!

Master Assassin :platinum: Assassin's Creed Unity

July 20, 2020

Not a game I ever really thought I was gonna end up going back to, but Gaming By Numbers is magical that way I think ? but man it feels good to have this out of my backlog almost entirely at this point after more than five years. I mean, I have one trophy left in the DLC but maaaaan I really don't want to, it's getting 100% in Dead Kings and y'all I am not here for it. But it would be the only PS4 Assassin's Creed I haven't 100%'d yet.

I mean, what can I say. There were too many moments where I said "why am I doing this to myself again??" And I'm glad it's over.

Alcohol definitely helped me through the slog, that's for sure - so maybe not a solution but certainly a salve ? especially for those times I'd be doing something timed and Arno would just randomly jump weird or get stuck in the ground.

Platinum :platinum: Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (PS3)

August 3, 2020

Man, I gotta tell you, I know it's like in vogue to shit on these games, but I had so much fun running through this again! I remember this being so annoying on Crushing, but I feel like they either made Crushing harder on the PS4 version, or I'm just better at this than I was the last time I platinum'd it. And even though this is technically the third time I've played through the story, I enjoyed myself so much I didn't even skip the cutscenes - even though I would have significantly cut down on the time it would have taken me to play. I'm really glad I got the now (near?) unattainable online only trophies last year shortly before they closed the servers, because if I hadn't I probably wouldn't have ever gone back to it. Sucks that I can't get the completion percentage higher than 51%, but I'll be totally honest even if I could, there's no way I'm gonna play the online. I'm just... I don't care. Now I just need to finish up the PS3 version of Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 4, and I think I'll have every Uncharted Platinum! That's pretty nerdy, but it makes me happy ?

Platinum :platinum: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3)

August 19, 2020

This is probably one of my favorite games of all time, and let me tell you it's a good thing too because playing it back to back with not only the third game but also so I could get the Crushing run done really 'Charted me the hell out. I played it on Easy the first time around almost ten years ago, like a pleb, and unlike the PS4 versions you can't just pop into the hardest difficulty, which is a real bummer. But if I remember correctly, I played it because it was rented it from a local rental store (wow, that's a strangely outdated sentence now) so I didn't have long to finish it. I won't lie, the second sit down playthrough to clear this out, I definitely used the Tweaks glitch. I'm not too proud, screw it ? Now to play something that isn't Uncharted for awhile.

The Swapper 1f4af.png

August 20, 2020

This one has been festering in my backlog for what feels like a thousand years, but I'm glad that I didn't let it fester any longer! If you like philosophical questions of what a soul is, what it means to be living, and also super love puzzles this one is the game for you. It really reminded me a lot of SOMA, which I also deeply loved. Plus, this bad boy is like a couple hours long at absolute best. It took me longer, but I was like 20 minutes from the ending when I decided to go to bed instead. Hey what can ya' do, I'm getting old and I was sleepy. All the trophies are collectible based, so like World to the West you can 100% the game without actually seeing the ending, but c'mon man don't be a wiener just finish the game it's really interesting.

Assassin's Creed Freedom Cry (PS4) 1f4af.png

August 26, 2020

Getting another 100%'er out of my backlog, which also just so happened to work with Gaming By Numbers. Originally I wanted my #0 to be finishing up Man of Medan but I can tell I'm going to want to play that closer to Halloween time since Halloween in the States is going to be severely, severely limited thanks to Covid and people not taking it seriously. Freedom Cry was fine, it does make me wish the naval battles were still a part of the franchise, but the old controls are still awful and still not missed at all. I would have loved for Adewale's story to have been longer - I want to say he's talked about more in Assassin's Creed III and in Rogue? I wanna say maybe I'll play through those games again but I genuinely don't see that happening ? though I do have platinums to still get in those games before Ubisoft closes those servers. But yeah, it was short, it was fun, it was interesting, and it didn't make me want to scream so all 'n all a pretty good Assassin's Creed installment.

Hidden Expert! :platinum: Hidden Through Time

August 28, 2020

You know, there's been a pretty interesting ethics conversation around trophy hunting and what is or is not a legitimate trophy hunting excursion and the eventual platinum trophy. Games with high completion, Ratalaika games, trophy stacks, and now the platinum exploits for Cuphead and Fall Guys usually are the mainstays in the whole conversation. The scoffing "yeah well that one doesn't count because x" is such an insular insult that has surrounded trophy hunting as long as I've been doing it. I guess it depends on why you play video games or why you trophy hunt. I'm not gonna sit here and act like I don't like seeing those invisible numbers go up, or that I don't get a positive hit of dopamine when I see that last trophy pop. I also just like getting the biggest bang for my buck, so even before there were trophies I would play games to their fullest just to squeeze out as much as I could from it. I also won't sit here and act like I haven't cheesed a grinding trophy, or that I haven't looked at a guide for help when I'm stuck or when I just can't find the last collectible I'm looking for. It doesn't make me feel like my accomplishment is any less legitimate, but some people may think so. Is a popular game that's not impossible to complete any less legitimate than an impossibly hard game that no one completes? Games like Hidden Through Time are games that are often regarded as "pay to platinum" - because they're cheap, short, and you can find a guide online that gives you all the locations to everything you're looking for (think Where's Waldo but with like 5-20 Waldos you're looking for). This kind of game is my absolute jam - I have tons of games on my phone just like this; I love puzzles and puzzle games. So when I could play a game that looks fun and get a platinum for my time, of course I jumped at the chance, especially since it was on sale. But is my hard work de-legitimized because others have cheesed it? Does it even matter if someone somewhere that I'll never meet or see may think so? I find this whole discussion just absolutely fascinating from an anthropological point of view, because some people who exist in this subculture of a subculture of a subculture do think that and do agonize over what is or is not a legitimate. I know someone is going to think to themselves "yeah well that one doesn't count because it's too easy, anyone can get it", and that doesn't make me mad it makes me want to pick their brain and find out why

Anyway, Hidden Through Time was really cute and fun, but there's a lot of glitches surrounding the online portion of the game.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Hoo boy! It's been a fall y'all, and now that it's basically winter (I live in Oregon and staring down the barrel of ten uninterrupted days of torrential downpour, it's definitely winter here) things have settled enough that I can actually stick with a video game long enough to actually finish it! Imagine that!

Knights of Penfurzy :platinum: Knights And Bikes

September 7, 2020

Forgot to post this one, whoopsie doodles. Which is too bad, because I genuinely loved this game so much. Those two little ladies injected this gaming experience with so much charm and humor, it was a genuine delight to play. It really did remind me of being a little kid and toolin' around the neighborhood with my little friends on our bikes and making up stories and games together. There's no fast travel or really a map of any kind, which can feel annoying at first but it's such a logical and theme-setting choice, because it's not like they would have had a map of their small town and GPS sure as hell wouldn't have been in their pockets in the 80s. And it being a Double Fine joint you know it's packed full of amazing stylistic visual and musical choices! That theme song is just amazing, and I'm not gonna lie I unironically listen to it sometimes. This is just another cavalcade in Yen's 'it's a really cute and charming adventure game, I loved it, it made me cry' video game cabinet so just go play it if the trailer gives you serotonin.

8ndGAe9.jpg

I also finished another amazing Gaming By Numbers Event! I always love participating in interesting and different trophy hunting community events, and this is one that I've come to look forward to a lot! And also I'm kinda sad that no winter event has been started yet, especially since I'm too lazy/busy to host one myself.

A Little Help From My Friends :platinum: Guardians of the Galaxy

November 11, 2020

It's a Telltale Game, man, I don't know what to tell you. Played one ya' played em all. But I won't lie, this did make me want to go back and watch the two movies, which is ultimately probably the point of the game more than anything else. And! The least glitchy one I've played in years! But I will say, since the company is no longer around and the servers are offline and everything, there is something that's lost from the experience in seeing how your choices stacked up against other peoples' choices made in the game. But, I had it on the shelf and I had completely forgot about it's existence, and after a time of playing but not completing any games, it was an easy get.

Platinum :platinum: The Suicide of Rachel Foster

November 14, 2020

Hey if a game gives you a warning that the content of the game is potentially triggering: believe them! I bought this and a couple other extremely cheap cool, interesting looking indie games I'd either had my eye on for a long time, or discovered and immediately needed to play. This was one of the lot that I bought, and there's something about slow burn horror games that I adore - hell I even liked The Impatient, even if it was a joke that they released it as a $60 game initially. I'd never heard of this game before I bought it, and boy oh BOY this game is an interesting play. And there's a lot of interesting details that I probably wouldn't have missed without them, but their presence really leant itself a lot of credibility, in my eyes anyway, right away. The camera moving with footfalls, the weight of looking around being slow and heavy, seeing the main character's hands when she's interacting with objects, even so much that the camera angle would change, and many more decisions that were just stylistically really smart. And my God this had one of the most subtle but bone-chilling moments in a game in recent history. I'm talking fully activated my fight or flight in a major way. This is definitely something that could be used as platinum fodder, especially since all the trophies are golds, but realistically if the trophies are the only reason you're playing it there are worse ways to spend a few hours for imaginary points. I liked that you could actually enact a change in the story and dialogue, which isn't something I'm used to seeing in 'walking sim' games of this ilk, but being a Daedalic joint there's definitely more (though admittedly not too much more) to it than just walking around and having the story happen to you - this isn't a Everybody's Gone to the Rapture for sure. It's dark, it's heavy, and it really made for a perfect game to play in the middle of a huge rain storm.

Personal Growth :platinum: Gris

November 29, 2020

Another beautiful indie game with a gorgeous soundtrack, who would have thought? Man, I really have a type, huh? To be fair, I never even gave this a second glance until someone in a Discord I'm in said I should check it out - and I'll be honest, it (unsurprisingly based off the games attached to this account) ticked all my boxes and c'mon Devolver Digital makes great games. And I cannot recommend this game enough - I loved it. It's one of the best games I've played this year. The soundtrack alone makes it unbelievably compelling, but the game play itself is so much fun and so satisfying that I'm convinced you could play it in complete silence and still enjoy it. You can play it and 100% it one go, but honestly do yourself a favor and just let yourself enjoy it the first time through because there's chapter select and despite how long it took me, because adulthood is a ballache, the game is realistically not that long. I don't even wanna say anything else other than if you're reading this and you for some reason care about my opinions, you should look into playing this game.

DLC 1f4af.png Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty

December 3, 2020

SEVEN YEARS. We done did the thing, y'all, I platinumed Borderlands 2. Thankfully the PS3 version lets you sorta cheese leveling the other characters up by letting you have your same profile be playing with you in the game, so True Vault Hunter Mode came in real clutch getting my main to 50 and the other characters up to the level they needed to be for their specific trophies. But man oh man I forgot how much fun terror and mayhem could be after playing so many games in a row that are all ambient indie darlings. I'm still bound and determined to get 130 platinums this year, but I'm extremely close to also finishing the Hammerlock DLC so I think I'll finish that up before moving on. Everyone is brickin' it over the PS5 and I'm still trying to finish PS3 games ? good lord.

Totale Brutale :platinum: The Sexy Brutale

December 16, 2020

This shouldn't have taken me quite so long, but I was having chronic pain issues and now I might have Covid again so weeeee here we are!

I've been wanting to play this game for a really long time, since the first time I saw the cover art when a physical copy came through the used video game store I used to work at. I never bought it, but I thought about and hmm'd and hah'd every time it would come up on sale, but I finally bit the bullet and bought! And I really liked it, I really did. I know this is another one of those trophy fodder games you can follow a guide for, but there's so many small details that you miss by doing that, but to be fair there are worse way to get your invisible internet points. The music, atmosphere, and art style are so interesting and so different, that needing to restart the day 10,000,000 times was okay because there was something exciting about the gameplay and puzzle solving. And I love that as the day goes on, you recognize certain sounds and cues. It's interesting that everything that happens in this game is happening concurrently, whether you intervene or not. It shouldn't take you nearly as long as it took me, but seriously keep track of your own collectibles because the game won't do it for you and it is a pain to try and go back and figure out which ones you did or didn't collect.

All 'n all, I really enjoyed it! One more indie darling for me haha! Now onto... Another indie game. I really am dedicated to getting 130 platinums this year, but every day I'm more convinced I won't make it. But hey, if I do have Covid again, that's a lot of video game time if nothing else I guess.

The Mooseman Platinum  :platinum: The Mooseman

I mean... Meh?

Look, the game has a beautiful art style, the music is gorgeous, and I love the opportunity to learn about other cultures in an engaging way. But it's just not much of a game, to be honest. It is definitely a walking simulator cleverly disguised as a Metroidvania that really reminded me of Never Alone. Something I find myself saying a lot is 'there are worse ways to get invisible PSN points' but... I mean, there are probably better ways than this. This isn't anyone's favorite game, to be plain. I paid very little for it, but I'm glad I just went ahead and got it out of my backlog. It wasn't horrible, and it definitely helped me pass the the time, but... Meh. Just meh.

Prizes, Plunder, and Adventure! :platinum: Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag (PS3)

January 10, 2021

Seven years and three weeks! And my God, that online grind for 50 levels took forever and it definitely was not the most interesting thing in the world to have the same maps to run through 1000 times in Wolfpack to level up. But I did it! Boom baby. What ballache, but it's over. Until I have to do it again for the other three Assassin's Creed games I wanna finish on the PS3.

God help me.

A Nerd Saves the World :platinum: Truberbrook

January 13, 2021

I feel like there's starting to be a definite pattern in the games that I choose and the things I like about them. But how can I not love a point and click game set in a sleepy German village in the 1960's where the main character is a quantum physicist  trying to unravel an Earth-shattering mystery full of hilarious, fourth-wall breaking humor with a jazzy soundtrack to underscore your puzzling adventure set with a claymation-like, Fantastic Mister Fox-esque artstyle? I mean, it ticks all the boxes! You play as not entirely hapless but just as confused as you are protagonist Hans Tannhauser on his unexpected German vacation when his notes for his quantum mechanics paper are stolen by a mysterious, glowing man, and it's up to you to find his life's work. The puzzles aren't exceptionally difficult and very satisfying (with one exception but thankfully there's lots of guides out there), and the humor is just, ah, chef's kiss I'm telling you. I found myself listening to the same conversations multiple times just so I could screen shot the quips. The developer hasn't done anything before this or since, but I'll be waiting for more from them because I'm extremely impressed!

Big Adventurer :platinum: Sackboy: A Big Adventure  (PS4)

February 9, 2021

I wasn't really planning on playing this game, nor did I even know it came out for PS4 - I was sure it was a PS5 exclusive. But for my birthday this year two of my friends pooled together and got me the super cute Collector's Edition! How could I refuse? And goodness gravy, I just couldn't put this one down even if my life depended on it! The LittleBigPlanet Games I could put down and never go back to (evidence by the fact I did that twice) but this just got me where I lived I guess. It was such a delight to come home to after a long day of work and just platform and jam out to fun, atmospheric covers of songs and endless puzzles. Even the really hard parts of the game where so enjoyable I thought String it Together was fun more than anything else! Plus it was a nice break from my usual game of choice and my year long crusade against my PS3 backlog. Plus there's something about playing a game where you can turn off your brain, listen to a podcast, and decompress. I eagerly await DLC or if nothing else playing it again on the PS5 when I get one ?

Also, the 2020 Wrap Up came out!

Considering I guess it could be a lot worse buuuuut I did play the equivalent of 104 days of video games, so, take that with a grain of salt. But I earned :platinum:28 :gold:164 :silver:277 :bronze:447 ! Pretty fucking good year of gaming I'd say! Here's to probably another full year of gaming thanks to America and the state I live in not getting their act together Covid-wisewise.

Assassin's Creed Revelations (PS3) 1f4af.png The Lost Archive

February 23, 2021

Hooooo boy, been working on cleaning up the online trophies for the plat and let me tell you that shit is dead as disco. Realistically I need to just hitch onto a boosting session here on the site, or start my own, but goodness gravy it's saying something that I was able to impress Warren Vidic before I cleaned up two trophies.

Don't look at me like that, it was on sale.

Now to finish up a real game for a change.
