Popular Post SnowxSakura
" Sony Interactive Entertainment announced today that Deputy President Jim Ryan will be appointed as the next President and CEO of the company effective April 1, replacing current CEO John Kodera. Current President and CEO John (Tsuyoshi) Kodera will take Jim Ryan’s role and is set to focus on creating innovative user experiences and further enhancing the network area as Deputy President. Jim Ryan will be the Representative Director and President of SIE who reports directly to Sony President and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida. As for John Kodera, he will be its Representative Director and Deputy President. Here’s a comment from Kenichiro Yoshida: “Our Game & Network Services business has grown into the Sony Group’s largest business in terms of both sales and operating income. Furthermore, our business in this domain holds significant importance as our growth driver going forward. At the same time, this industry is relentlessly fast-moving, and to remain the market leader, we must constantly evolve ourselves with a sense of urgency. Based on extensive discussions with John, I have decided to change the management structure of SIE to ensure sustainable evolution of the PlayStation® platform and further growth of the network area. Jim Ryan has been long committed to the growth of the PlayStation® business for the last 25 years. I believe that this new structure, where Jim will manage SIE’s overall organization and operations, and which will allow John to focus on the key mission to further develop PlayStationTMNetwork (PSNSM) that has now grown into an immensely large platform with over 90 million Monthly Active Users worldwide — will enable SIE to accelerate its innovation and evolution even further. Moving forward, I also have expectations for John to lead the Sony Group’s DX (Digital Transformation) strategy drawing on his wealth of experience with PSNSM, in addition to his mission at SIE.” A comment from John Kodera: “I have been discussing with Yoshida-san the need to drive SIE to the next phase in our rapidly changing business environment, and realize the evolution of the PlayStation® platform and further enriching the user experiences made possible through the network, which is an essential value that people expect in the entertainment PlayStation® provides. As a result, we have concluded that the best direction is for Jim to take the helm of the overall management of SIE, and for me to spearhead the network area to continue creating innovative services and experiences, where competition continues to intensify with many new players joining the business. Jim has extensive knowledge around the game business and industry, as well as deep understanding of the PlayStation® culture and strengths. I am confident that he will lead us to greater success as CEO of SIE. I will continue to support Jim by contributing to further strengthening user engagement, and to the overall growth of the PlayStation® business. I also aim to leverage my experience and accumulated expertise to contribute to strengthening the Sony Group’s DX (Digital Transformation) strategy.” Lastly, a comment from Jim Ryan: “It’s a huge honor to be asked to take on the role of President and CEO of SIE. I’ve seen the PlayStation® business grow and change massively since the very early days, and I hope to be able to put that experience to good use in reinforcing the foundations of the Game & Network Service business, and in evolving the entertainment that PlayStation® offers to its engaged and passionate community. Working with John and the SIE team around the world, I am committed to strengthening relations with our business partners, and to continuing to provide the ultimate interactive entertainment experiences that make PlayStation® the Best Place to Play.” https://www.siliconera.com/2019/02/12/sony-interactive-entertainment-appoints-jim-ryan-as-new-president-and-ceo/ This is bad news for people that like backwards compatibility Jim Ryan stated this in 2017 " Sony’s head of global sales and marketing, Jim Ryan, told Time that he doesn’t see why anyone would play old games given the advancements in fidelity achieved today. “When we’ve dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much,” said Ryan. “That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?” https://www.vg247.com/2017/06/05/why-would-anybody-play-this-says-sonys-jim-ryan-about-backwards-compatibility/

I really hope this doesn't effect people who still enjoy playing older games & hopefully doesn't reduce the PS3's lifespan because it's "old"
Popular Post olimoo101
From Jim Ryan's statements over the last few years he has seemed like a dinosaur from an older SIE. I hope that those statements are just his obligatory poor defense to justify decisions of others from within SIE of whom he doesn't agree with and that they do not actually represent his views. Fingers-crossed. Edited February 13, 2019 by olimoo101

Isa
I smell an ad box with further restrictions coming and a few new features to try make us ignore that fact.
nyonmyan
Backwards comp. is detrimental to game developers as they lose the opportunity to sell remakes and remasters. Put BC on PS5 and Sony will be like bleeding surfer in a shark tank.

Not sure if the greed is strongest with the US or Japanese side of things, honestly wonder if the Japanese higher ups have a say in all of this or if there just trying to keep the board happy. If it's the board then money talks ? I've clearly not looked into this so feel free to correct me guys

Put BC on PS5 and Sony will be like bleeding surfer in a shark tank. This is such bullshit. People will still rebuy them. People rebuy films for better quality going from VHS > DVD > Bluray > 4K. Especially with additional trophies they'll always be reason to do a remaster or remake. Plus b/c means you can throw it on PSN to sell digitally, where otherwise you'd make nothing as every sale eventually is going to be from the used market. Plus, people who love a game will buy it just to support it. I've bought FFVI on almost everything it's ever been on, Super Mario RPG too.

NaseemJohn
I personally think he's right. Games today are so much more advanced i don't see why anyone would want to be playing ps1 or ps2 games for any reason other than nostalgia.

It's not just nostalgia a lot ps1, ps2 and ps3 games are still genuinely good games that still hold up to date. They may not look as terrific as what we have now but IMO graphics ain't everything.

Not true at all, the only time you'll be navigating menus is if you're like me and you take forever to customize a character but other than that most offer 100+ hours of gameplay and exploration.

Yeah they may be fun, there's some classic games for PS1, PS2 and PS3 but he isn't lying when he says that those games are seriously outdated. Only very few of em still hold up and most of them that do are from the PS3 era.

I'd love to live in that alternate universe you've stumbled into. And games like platformers are timeless. Super Mario Bros. 3 feels just as good as it did when it came out.
yellowwindow7
say goodbye to the rumors that the ps5 to be backward compatible with all of the Playstation platforms, I just hope they don't remove the Playstation classic section off the Playstation store after this.
