Just bought the game and have a couple of questions

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Way back on original release I played this game for about 30 minutes before rage binning it. Then after a long gap and lack of games I gave it another go, stuck with it and it became one of my favourite RPG's that I have ever played, despite the crap fast travel system.

Anyway. Its on sale for £8.99 on the PS Store and I just couldn't resist it. Now its been a good few years since I played it and enough time has past that nothing can be spoiled, but I also forgot a lot due to the vast amount of content in the game. Yakking on here aren't I? Apologies.

Anyway if you chaps could answer a few questions I would really appreciate it.

1: I am aware of the hero guide on here which seems to be well done, but I am confused about the whole quests getting locked out thing. I know you have to save the guy from the goblins to keep him for that team quest or whatever its called, but can every other quest be done up until the battle in chapter 6 or have I gotten that wrong? Just cannot remember how much time you have to get stuff done.

2: There are no online trophies I take it? Cannot remember if anything is tied to pawns or something like that.

3: I remember the awesome pawn system but can you create more than one?

4:I had a quick glance at the level up trophy. So is it best to play in normal mode or would the 1st playthrough be best on easy then just boost the levels on the hard playthrough? I do remember the game can seriously kick you arse in places so would like some advice on this.

5: No on the hero guide it says make a thick female character but then says its not required. Why was that left in if its not required?

As much info as you can give would be really appreciated. Cheers.

  1. No, you need to do side quests before completing specific main quests. Completing certain main quests locks you out of completing side quests. Think of it this way: the story is divided into parts and each part has a batch of side quests. Going to the next part automatically fails most (if not all) the side quests from the previous batch. As long as you complete side quests first, you'll be fine. Though a few side quests requires you advance the story a bit before they're unlocked. In the Hero Guide each section has a recommended order to complete main quests and side quests.
  2. Nope, every trophy can be obtained offline, though hiring pawns is easier to do online as you won't need to search for them in the world and player pawns are infinitely better than randomly generated in-game pawns.
  3. No, one main pawn only.
  4. I can't recall, I do remember that using pawns that are at a higher level reduces the amount of exp you receive. When using lower-levelled pawns, you obtain more exp. Not having the main pawn with you also increases the exp.
  5. I don't remember writing something about needing a thick female character :hmm:. Could you tell me where that part is? But a female character and female pawn makes the side quest Thick as Thieves easier. If you have a male character and/or male pawn, you'll need to buy specific female clothes for them, otherwise the side quest will be failed. If the other 2 pawns are male, dismiss them and hire female pawns.

I hope this helps.

@DaveMcDamage is refering to some advice in the ps4 guide concerning the female character creation @Dragon-Archon . But you gave the necessary answer: for 1 sidequest you need a female hero or a male in female's clothes

Oooh, I thought the OP was referring to the gameplay guide, my bad  .

Evil Joker - Cheers for clearing that up.

Dragon Archon - Thanks for taking the time to get those answers in. Like I said I have played it before so nothing can be spoiled for me, but there are things I have forgotten. Gonna look further into the hero guide and see what quests I have to do and in what order.

I tried it on a test account first. Only gripes I have is that visually they don't seem to have improved anything, and the movement speed would have been awesome had it have been a touch quicker. But as I also said when I last played it I enjoyed the hell out of it and its the same situation where I have nothing else so can invest the game time.

Cheers gents.

Ooo! Also....

6: Did the Dark Arisen give you loads of those purple fast travel points? I was sure it was that which allowed you to buy more for the original game.

Level up trophy can and should be done using the Death exploit in BBI, you will spend maybe 1 hour doing it. Hard mode gives more exp, but it's better to run through it quickly.

Purple stones can be found in set place in every playthrough and they transfer to NG+ too. You will be able to buy them from the merchant in NG+, but you can set only 10 of them. You get Eternal Ferrystone when you reach GS tavern storage. There are a few powerful clothing items too, including overpowered queen set.

You can send me a friend request if you need a 200 level pawn.

Appreciate your offer mate. Once I have gelled with the game I will message you.

Just started it. Love the create character tool on this game. Nothing has ever stood up to the tool on Saints Row 2, but this is still awesome. Just chose the Strider class as I remembered there was a quest where you had to escort someone and there were those man-bird things and a bow takes care of em. Cannot remember much else at the moment and going to use the hero guide to tell me which missions to do and in what order.

7: Before I forget. I always remember the awesome ending you get from playing through a second time. Without spoiling for others, can you see the awesome ending when using hardmode as your second playthrough?

EDIT

The guide suggests getting the eternal ferrystone from the inn keeper but on my game it is not there, just the three stones for the dark arisen dlc. Any info?

Sure thing. This is The Hero guide I was talking about. It lists all the quests and the order to complete those per stage.

In addition to nyonmyam;s reply: there are 4 portcrystals to find during the story, which can be collected again during NG+. The locations and requirements are listed here.

Cheers again man.

I'm using two guides at the minute. One with the list and the other from I think the main guide which informs you which quests to start but not finish or even start in some cases.

But what is confusing me is that it suggests collecting the eternal stone from the inn keeper but when I went to him all it had was the three bitter black stones, no eternal stone. Anything I should do to get this to appear?

Ok, good luck and have fun with the game :D .

IIRC the eternal ferrystone is added to your stash after completing the main quest Lure of the Abyss.

Cheers guys.

I made sure Reynard lived and once I defeated the cyclops he appeared in the encampment but no message appeared to say the save reynard quest had been completed. Does it not actually have a quest and its the second stage for search party which is all that is logged? Also, to buy 10 things from him shall I just buy cheap food, back out, repeat purchase?

edit

Ok managed to get Reynalds search party quest started.

I've saved and quit the game as I have some pawn info I need.

Just created my own pawn and want to recruit 2 more. I created a mage so now looking for a warrior, strider and then decide which I want a double class of. So when I search for pawns, if I search the same level as me they cost me nothing, but they also belong to human players. If I take them does this effect another gamer being able to use them?

Is there a way to find none human created pawns?

No, it does not affect other players, since the pawns you use are copies that are created when resting while playing online. When you dismiss a pawn and rest, the knowledge and rift crystals said pawn gained, is brought back to the player whose pawn you hired. When that player rests again, it's obtained.

Pawns from people who are on your PSN friend list are free, even if they're at level 200.

Yeah, those are all the in-game pawns that are walking around in the game. But they're crap.

First of all, happy to hear you are enjoying the game, it is one of my favs of all time ?

For the quests i will let my esteemed colleagues answer cause its been too long to give you an intelligent response.

To the question of online, although technically there are no online trophies, the pawns made by other players are generally way better than the ai generated ones. So definitely stay online.

The caveat being that you can only rercruit within your rank UNLESS you have a friend (read psn) with a high level character, then you can recruit them.

This being said, you will receive much less xp (that can easily be farmed, see guide), but seeing as the dlc is much, much harder than the main game, a powerful pawn can be a lifesaver.

I did this on my own and sometimes wished i had a friend with an OP pawn. So if you need the help, you can always send me a fq.

Good luck!

Can't thank you guys enough for all the info and generosity. Very awesome of you all indeed.

I will indeed hold off using high ranking pawns until perhaps much later or maybe on the second playthrough, so I will definitely be in touch about those.

Ok so now I have another question. When I started the first goblin encounters the rook guy would power me up and I did a bit of combat damage. I have since created a healer mage and recruited a warrior and strider pawns. I sent Rook back but my own mage never powers me up and I do next to no damage on anything other than rats. 9/10 its my level 5 pawn team who wreck the enemies before I even reach them, and even my bow does no damage anymore. Any info on this would be appreciated.

Also. The guide mentions picking up the DLC item clothing which break the game. In what sense do they do this?

EDIT

Yeah just googles it and you cannot start that mission until after Matter of Mrymidons or whatever its called. Seems the hero list is out of whack.

Remembered how to get my created pawn to enchant my weapons now. Saved before starting the quest 'Lost & Found'. Read the description and a faint memory is coming back to me of that quest.

Level 9 so far and just swapped out the online pawns from 5 to 9.

When or if they ever do make a sequel, I really hope they keep the pawn system but this time allow you to create the whole team yourself.

EDIT

Lost & Found. Now I remember this quest and the first time I played it this was the reason I packed the game in because the bandits were OP as f**k.  The other guide says to do this quest at night as only wolves appear and after about 30 hits I can defeat a wolf on my own... woot! Will give it another go later. Also remember what a f**king pain the travel can be in the game as now I need to go back and change it to night... Gah!

I think one thing both guides are missing is an indicator at which level the gamer should tackle these quests. Example rude awakening - level 5 or above, Lost & Found - level 5billion+ :D

Ok ran into a weird problem. Followed the hero guide and finished uninvited guest and lost & found but after trekking to Maul's bandit camp he says nothing for the no honour among thieves quest. Is the hero guide out of whack because the trophy guide is saying start this quest after getting to Soren.

EDIT

Looked on the wiki and the hero guide is indeed out of whack. You cannot start this mission until after Matter of Myrmidons or whatever its called.

EDIT.... again.

I need a wakestone shard. I want to save the little boy but the black cat is expensive but heard the fat noble sells them but he also has a quest. Can I buy from him if I accept his quest or do I need to fulfill some things before he sells?

Thanks for the heads up about Honour Among Thieves. I've adjusted it. For Reaper's Scorn, there are 4 free wakestone shards that can be collected. IIRC you need to complete the quest for Fournival first before he sells wakestone shards.

If you notice something else or have questions, feel free to tag me (by typing @Dragon-Archon) or quote me. That way, I'll receive a notification.

No probs mate.

Its a cracking game and no doubt there will be more late to the game, so the more correct the info the better.

As for the shard. I realised the you could sell the DLC monocle for over 300K, so I did that and got the quest done. Level 20 now so starting to get on even ground with the random enemies and getting more kills in that the pawns.

Lets say I finish my easy playthrough, is it worth saving BBI until my hard playthrough on the second run, or do it on the easy run just to get some extra levels in for the hard playthrough?

Also. Is Assassin worth swapping with Strider?

It's possible to hold your ground in BBI after one playthrough, but the bosses will be very strong. BBI is intended for players who had already obtained the platinum in the vanilla Dragon's Dogma (and who had defeated at least the offline Ur-Dragon). After clearing BBI for the first time, the real BBI starts (commonly referred to as "post-Daimon") with new and harder enemies. Even the final boss has an altered form. You could always give it a try and see how well you fare. There's good loot to be found, even during the first run. Though the best weapons and armour (level 3 cursed loot) isn't available until the post-Daimon runs.

Yes, don't stick with the starting classes, they suck. Advanced and hybrid classes are much better. Assassin and Ranger are imo some of the best classes. Note that pawns can't use hybrid classes.

If you play as a Sorcerer, BBI is easy in the first playthrough, even at levels 80-100. The Holy Focused Bolt will cheese everything. The big cyclops fall pretty fast with the High Maelstrom spell. Bosses are weak to Holy. Actually the final boss in BBI is so weak against it that it's the perfect way to grind levels for the 200 level trophy.

Even the offline Ur-Dragon dies fast with this method.

The only downside playing as a Sorcerer is that you will have to spawn several times Death in order to defeat him. It will still take one shot to end every encounter though. And there is a fixed way to spawn him

Cheers for the info,

I was watching a cool strider video of the UR Dragon being taken down very quickly. Can't remember that fight back on the 360 version, though at that point I think I took a break from achievements. Not too sure though. I did complete it twice though which is why I know of the awesome character endings. Best twist ending since Double Dragon :D

I've done Lure of the Abyss and next working on the side quests until the next MQ needs to be done. Got that blue caped armour but already getting bored of it. Might need to change things up a notch.

You know that arm guard which is called Lion something. In the description it mentions something about sorrow. Does it have a particular negative effect or something?

The PS4 version is upgraded to Dark Arisen and contains several crystals for fast travel.  You can place them anywhere on the map to travel to them later.  They can be moved if not in the right spots.  Once you replay the game a few times you learn the best spots to cut down time on quests.

Hire level 200 pawns from friends, no cost.
