Simple yes or no question. Answer with your heart. I'll tell you where I'm going with this later. Or I won't. Keep it civil.

Cheating, like most social issues, is not a matter of black or white.

I voted yes as I do boost, though I know where this thread is going.

Singleplayer no

Multiplayer yes

I don't care if people cheat in single player games. It is all about having fun but don't do it online. You just ruin it for everyone else.

You need to flip your answers as the question was "is cheating okay in gaming?"

If you feel cheating is okay in some instances, did you refrain from voting?

Is boosting cheating, or using glitches, bugs, cheeses etc?

For single player games? Sure, turn on that infinite ammo 360 noscoping aimbot while you down Doritos and mountain dew all day every day!

Multiplayer games against other players? no, just no. How bad are you against other players that you have to turn on cheats to win???? The worst skilled players are the ones turning on the cheats.

I bet a drama will begin soon here

Cheating is ok in Single player modes where you don't disturb anyone, but if you bring that shit into multiplayer modes then definitely no, it isn't. Warhawk was quite full of people using various glitches and that was not fun for the many people that were just trying to enjoy the game, and the same thing applies to many other games.

(I assume "cheating" as usage of glitches & exploits)

Crapidummy would have gone crazy here though.

For trophies?  Don't care so long you aren't outright hacking the game/ system (it's ok if the trophy is bs 😉).

But when it comes to actual gameplay, I'm not ok with it unless it's against another cheat.

Yes and no, depending on the circumstances.

Exploiting glitches for trophies due to a game dev's fault is fine. I've even done it myself.

But when you're against people online and you resort to underhanded tactics because you can't win, that's not okay.

In competitive play, hell no. If somebody cheats in an MMO or multiplayer game to give themselves a real advantage, I’m all for companies that put their foot down and ban. I played Elder Scrolls Online for a long time and I’ve seen cheating for content clears, scores on leaderboards, PVP, people using bots/modded consoles to farm materials, etc. I always reported it when it was going on.

In speedrunning, meh. I only follow glitchless categories because that’s what interests me, but some people like categories where glitches/cheats are allowed. If that’s your thing, I won’t rain on your parade. To each their own. As long as the speedrunner is following the rules of the category they have chosen, it’s not a big deal.

In single player games, do whatever the hell you want. You are only affecting your own experience if you trivialize a game, and whether or not it’s worth it is up to the person.

Since nobody gets hurt: Yes, it's okay. People take this hobby way too serious.

I voted yes but with the conditions that it not affect anyone else, such as in a MP environment. Basically anything the game will allow you to do without manipulating it by some means outside of what is possible in game, like hacking or game saves, is fine by me. A glitch or exploit isn't cheating if the game let's you do it.

You can get ban in some games for using glitches or exploits. For example in Four Kings Casino

There's a huge gray area with this debate. Boosting could technically be considered "cheating", but it's obviously not the same kind of cheating as people who mod their online games or hack game saves to unlock trophies. Plus boosting is a mutual agreement between 2 or more gamers, although it could be said you're cheating the leaderboards and such.

We need to clarify what we mean by cheating. It used to hardly be a concern before the trophy/achievement system came around. If trophies truly have value attached to them then it could be seen as more of a problem.

I think it can be if you were doing some blind run competition or you were participating in a specific game via a community that has that outlined as a transgression in the rules.

I think trying to tie down "cheating" (Extremely broad word, i didn't even bother answering the poll) to a universal set of bulletpoints is a mistake. I'm fine with people having their own personal code on what they consider cheating or not that they apply to themselves or other people who willingly accept their rules, but i hope these people can also respect the many other communities on what they consider legitimate or cheating as long as said communities themselves aren't infringing on another.

If you want an example of communities with very wild views on what is considered legit play or cheating in a game look up Ocarina of Time on speedrun(dot)com, they have many categories on speedruns that have many absurd rules, and to consider what these people do 'cheating' in their respective games and categories is in my opinion, quite a narrow viewpoint.

Either way I say no. I really don't see the point in cheating, if you have to cheat then you probably shouldn't be playing games.

You're right. Run for office instead.
