It's time for part 2! This thread continues the proposal for introducing a system to the website called the Ribbon System. A lot of you had some great feedback and recommendations for it and it took a lot of time to get everything in order for this next post, but it's now ready for prime time.

Voting Again on the Ribbon of Effort

In the last thread it started off fairly clear that people wanted the max percent to be 75%, but that started to really change over the course of the thread as more and more people voted for 50% to the point it became a virtual tie with a number of people wanting to change their vote in the end because they changed their mind. So now is the battle between what the maximum platinum rarity percentage the ribbon of effort will be awarded to 50% or 75%.

 

Remember when you vote, you are voting for the MAX percent limit for the Ribbon of Effort. For example, '75%' means any platinum trophy you earn with a 0% - 75% rarity gets you a ribbon. Any platinum trophy earned with a rarity above 75% will not get you a Ribbon of Effort. Take your time with this, and take a look at the platinum trophies in your collection and see which you think makes the most sense.

 

Here are arguments for each:

• 50% - The cutoff here is not a gray area, it is the split between uncommon and common rarity and not hard to interpret or understand. The downside here is some games that still take time may not get this ribbon, such as Spider-Man, though this is an outlier and it has a chance of moving into the 40% range in the future. On the other hand, this will eliminate pretty much anything that takes just mere minutes to get a platinum trophy.
• 75% - The cutoff here is more of a gray area and not truly based off a rarity tier, however it is a safe area that covers games like Spider-Man but still excludes most games that are equivalent to clicking on a glass of Mayonnaise for 10 minutes to get a platinum trophy.

 

The New Ribbons

Based on the first Ribbon System thread feedback, a number of you wanted ribbons based around total completion along with completion for non-platinum games. The idea is to keep the total types of ribbons to a small number to avoid confusing inflation, but these 2 are very much useful to where they are hard to pass up.

 

Ribbon of Completion

 

 

This ribbon will be considered a count of the total number of non-platinum 100% games you've completed. The rules for this one are simple, if you've got that green checkmark for a non-platinum game on your profile, that adds to your counter for this ribbon. This will be a really cool identifier for those profiles you've probably seen that purposely do not go for platinum trophies, but instead go for completing all the games they can which feature no platinum trophy, among other things!

 

 

Ribbon of Totality

 

 

These ribbons are awarded to those that go the extra mile with total completion. They don't just get the platinum and move on to the next one, they stick around and (sometimes tediously) get every single trophy that was added on to the base trophy list. Sometimes this requires buying and playing through DLC, or just spending a ton of time pushing through trophies related to game updates, or a combination of both. An ultimate award for completionists as this will only be an earnable ribbon if a game releases DLC trophies which are added on to the base game trophies.

 

 

Customizing the Two Ribbons in the Top Bar

In the first thread people expressed the desire to customize the top bar, down to even removing the ribbons completely. The images below provide a way for the profile owner to customize their top bar and what that could look like.

 

The Default View (This will be the default view shown on every profile unless the profile owner customizes it)

 

No Ribbons View (If a profile owner elects to remove both top bar ribbons on their profile)

 

Custom View (If a profile owner switches out the default top ribbons with their own)

 

The top bar of your profile will display the Ribbon of Effort and Ribbon of Rarity by default, but registered members would be able to customize their personal profile to show what 2 ribbons they want to display, or opt to not show them in the top bar at all if that's their choice. For example, someone that focuses on just getting games without platinum trophies may choose to display the Ribbon of Completion as one of their top ribbons as it's more relevant to their profile.

 

 

The Sidebar Module

If you'll be able to customize the top bar, then there has to be a home base for the ribbons to reside, right? So in comes the Ribbon module. This section won't take up much space in the sidebar of a profile and will display at a glance their 4 kinds of ribbons and how it compares with their platinum trophy count and their completed games count (a number already visible on your profile to the right of "Played Games" at the base of the banner image).

 

There can also be a nifty customize button where you can edit how the ribbon system appears on the top bar of your profile.

 

 

Redesigning the Ribbon of Rarity?

One last thing is what are your thoughts on changing the symbol for the ribbon of rarity? It could be the symbol of the original platinum trophy that was live on PSN for only the first week or two of the trophy system before Sony changed it to its current design, it would be a cool way to pay homage to it.

What Are Your Thoughts?

Definitely share your thoughts on this! Much like you did in the first thread it really helped make improvements and changes that hopefully make the system better. While it may not be necessary to make a Part 3, we shall see! Before this is implemented, we'd want to make sure it's a system most people would like.

 

Remember this is likely a ways off from being implemented and not taking priority over other features people have been asking for, though threads like this will get this system in a well agreed upon place for whenever it does get added.

That feature would make this kind of mindset an official PSNP doctrine. A website that discriminates parts of its userbase is not desirable.

I followed this for a bit when presented and i think it's a neat new option, still i think the cap should be 50% because otherwise, is it even an Effort? If more than half of the people have it it's probably something like TWD most of times where you end the game or do 2-3 easy thing maybe not even hidden and you get it.

 

I think maybe a 3rd Ribbon as a "Special Effort" for Ultra Rare Plats would be awesome, just to make you feel even better at getting some of them that requires either a Ton of Hours or really hard things to do!

This isn't a way to discriminate the userbase, if someone takes the time to 'discriminate' a user based on a number on their profile, there might be a problem with that user. The same argument can be made for completion percentage, among many other stats. It's quite simply a new set of stats people can choose to (or not to) care about. If someone wants to go for platinum trophy count, those won't be going anywhere and the ribbons can be removed from the top bar by the profile owner

The ribbon of rarity is given for ultra rare platinum trophies, detailed here.

50%. I like the new ribbons, but putting even more stuff on the sidebar seems like a bit much. Not sure about customising though. Using the original platinum design seems better though, considering the normal platinum symbol is already in places on the site, so putting it here as well seems unneccesary.

I like the new Ribbon of Rarity redesign with the original platinum trophy image!

 

I still agree with 50%. There are very very few games that have over 50% for their platinum that require a modest effort. Most are quick games that take only a few hours.

 

Also, for anyone who feels it discriminated against part of the user base on PSNP that like “ezpz Ratalaika games”, vote for the option to hide ribbons! If someone doesn’t want the ribbons on their profile, they don’t need to have it at all. It kind of cuts the “discrimination” argument to..... ribbons 

 

But yay I like it!

In that case, why not just add a feature to display a users platinums by rarity?  The stats area already does that with trophies generally.  Seems a simply and elegant solution if new and deeper sets of stats are the only concern.

I prefer the original ribbon of rarity image to the crown, other than that this is a really really interesting way to grow the site.

Yes, this system would be designed to fix the original useful purpose of the platinum trophy, what set the trophy system apart from every other achievement system for the first 8 years it existed, where the platinum trophy used to be an interesting and useful indication of great effort. Now it's just simply a counter for getting all other trophies in a trophy list, no matter how much or little time that takes for each platinum that's earned. The trophy system has changed because of that aforementioned lack of quality control from Sony with their trophy list ruleset - which is really no fault of developers or gamers, because it's simply loopholes in the system ruleset that became more and more unraveled as more consoles released and the digital gaming revolution evolved. It just simply means the platinum trophy is different now. The criteria for earning every trophy tier is wildly inconsistent now (not just platinum trophies, but all tiers of trophies), and this would be an addition that signifies great feats a profile owner could choose to go after if they want to.

 

Maybe a user wouldn't care about the ribbon of effort, but would love going after a ribbon of completion, and so on, and would be able to show that off. It can help a profile owner show off whatever they like to go for. Nobody goes after the same thing, so say for example if a completionist discriminates against someone who is obviously an non-completionist, that's not the fault of the completion percentage counter on a trophy stats website, it's the problem of the person calling that person out.

Something that would be really neat is if you clicked the ribbons, and there was a simple leaderboard of the people who had the most of that type of ribbon.

PSNP is not Sony. What you see as the intention is exactly discrimination of certain users who obtain valid - since they are pofficial - trophies. If you want PSNP to exclude a certain part of the userbase with indicators that are placed at most prominent parts of the profile, PSNP would be doing nothing else than expressing nothing other than: "The more your PSNP numbers differ from the offical trophy system, the less we think of your games 8and this of course extends to the one who played those inferior games).

 

The trophy system - like it or not - is the official recognition for trophies. If PSNP weighs by its own factors, it is PSNP who excludes people, not their users.

 

I'll repeat myself from  the other thread: It is 3 clicks to sort the trophy log e.g for ultra rare Platinum trophies. Anyone who isn't willing to make those three clicks is not interested in that stat anyway. Boasting can be done on the forum, as it already happens aplenty.

Still a big "no" from me too. Arbitrary cut-offs make no sense (as evidenced by the Spider-Man issue) and it seems ridiculous to make something based on them so prominent on the site. The rarity leaderboard (and perhaps prominently displaying rarity leaderboard rank) would do everything that this ribbon system does but better.

I'd still quite like for this to become a PSNProfiles achievement type system, with more ribbons for a wider variety of things. Something that acknowledges different styles of trophy hunters - much like trophy lists do - rather than just single-mindedly targeting people who play easier games.

 

I mean I don't like seeing profiles that are just full of quick and easy games, but I don't think there's a need to create an entire system just to punish that one behaviour, when you could instead use the same system to reward different behaviours. There are many different types of trophy hunters, and with this specialised system all you're doing is picking out one group and saying to them "We don't like your type around here".

You've been busy, Mango. Now I see why part 2 took so long to get made.  I love the two new ribbons you're proposing here since it gives more recognition to those of us who hunt trophies outside of getting platinum trophies. The sidebar module is another great addition. In fact, I think I would prefer just having the ribbons displayed in that and keeping the top bar as it is now to prevent clutter. I guess the option to display whatever ribbons you want up there doesn't hurt, though.  

 

As for the Ribbon of Rarity's symbol, I like the idea of it being the original platinum trophy (the crown) as it differentiates it more from the Ribbon of Effort's symbol, and like you say, it's a cool way to pay homage to the origins of the trophy system.  Shouldn't there be another poll for this?

 

I already made my thoughts clear on the max percent limit of the Ribbon of Effort in the original thread, so I'll try to be brief. It should absolutely be 50% and NOT 75%, or else it loses its whole purpose. It's the point where common trophies become uncommon, so to me, that makes it more likely that platinum actually took some amount of effort to obtain. I don't think it's a good idea to raise the percentage to 75% just because of a few outliers like Spider-Man. Having the max percent limit at 50% makes it much more relevant to the average user (those of us who don't pad our stats with loads of worthless platinums).

 

I very much hope this ribbon system gets implemented. I have yet to hear a good argument as to why it shouldn't be.

For the third question, I voted "yes" to customizing but on user side. I want to be able to hide everyone's, including my owns and I want everyone with the setting on to be able to see everyone's, including their own. Make it two way, either you disable for everyone, including yourself, or you let it active the same way.

 

Other than that, I'm all in for more features in the site.
