Western release of PS4/Switch versions will be censored, Steam versions will be uncensored

Recommended Posts

According to the official website, the following changes have been made to the game's Western console releases:

Quote

  • Sala Oasis Scene
    • A sunbeam is placed over Sala’s naked lower body.
  • Symbols
    • Some cursor interaction symbols have been replaced with the “investigation” symbol. The story content and gameplay remains the same; only the cursor symbol itself has been replaced.

It seems silly to censor such a seemingly minor thing in an M-rated game, but whatever - I'll probably still play the PS4 version because a game with such ridiculous and amazing name belongs on my trophy list.

The censorship of this game means I will be getting it on Steam.  It's stupid to censor nudity.

I'm a little torn on this myself. I personally do not have a problem with censorship of sexualized nudity that portrays children/teenagers or characters that look like children/teenagers. Sala, on the other hand does not look underage (not that this means much in anime/games) so I think the censorship in this case is kind of silly.

Not surprised that the PS4 version is censored because Sony. It's a shame that the Switch version has been censored too, though. I was going to pre-order that version recently only to discover that fact (I check for censorship before I purchase any Japanese games these days). I'm curious as to what the reason is behind that because Nintendo have stated in the past that they are against forcing censorship on third party devs/publishers in contrast to Sony. This makes me think it could be a decision made by the publisher themselves. Either way, it looks like I won't be buying this game. I'm not really interested in playing games on PC.

Maybe it wasn’t Nintendo’s decision in this case?

Yeah, Nintendo's approach this generation can be summed up with "If the ESRB/CERO/PEGI states that this is not straight-up pornography and/or torture porn we're cool with it". I think this decision might have come directly from within Spike-Chunsoft itself.

Is there a reason English version of games are censored so often? Is it just because us Americans are so fucking sensitive? Censorship tends to ruin alot of games and animes.

That's certainly a large part of it, but I believe that there's also a fair bit of shouting about sex and nudity from corners of the UK as well. I can't speak for Mexico and Canada though. It's a shame though, because it robs viewers/gamers of a lot of fun moments that are not necessarily sexual, like this objectively hilarious moment from the Pokemon anime here:

Spike Chunsoft also censored the PC version of Zanki Zero: Last Beginning to bring it inline with the PS4 version which was completely unnecessary, so yeah, I highly doubt Nintendo had anything to do with this decision.
