MrTacoNinja
I'm in between memory 4 and 5, TRYING to advance to memory 5 but in order to do so I have to liberate 150 slaves from slave ships. I'd love to, really I would, but how the fuck can I when you just continue to bombard me with enemy ships?!? Fuck man STOP SMOTHERING ME and let me breath a little! You introduced a small segment of naval battle to me during the very beginning of the game and, what, this game expects me to be an expert at it now or something??? I'm absolutely terrible at it and the mechanics of it all just aren't clicking for me. I'm finding it so goddamn frustrating that twice now I've just threw my controller down in defeat! Rarely does a game ever make me wonder if walking away for good and letting it sit incomplete on my list is the better option. Is it meant to be this damn frustrating and annoying??? I have not upgraded my ship (I'm sure this will help) so I docked back at Port-au-Prince to hopefully find a merchant that can at least offer me some kind of ship upgrade or something and, well, can't find a merchant that offers ship upgrades. How do I upgrade my ship??? Furthermore, what am I doing wrong here that's making these naval fights so frustrating?
Popular Post Copanele
You upgrade your ship by releasing slaves. You unlock some upgrades(which you can buy from that base that you freed in the cave, south of the main city), with those upgrades you go hunt some smaller ships for materials that will upgrade your ship further for the bigger ones. Honestly just see a smaller defenseless ship and practice your controls on it. The game is not that hard, it is surprising that you have issues in it. If you can't release slaves via slave ships just go release from plantations or random events in the main city. But most important... If you do not upgrade your ship every stupid boat with 2 cannons will kick your ass so... Upgrade it ASAP Basically release some slaves->upgrade your ship a little -> prey on the other ships for materials - >upgrade your ship fully. You will blast men o war like there is no tomorrow at the end of the campaign Edited November 3, 2019 by Copanele
HaserPL
That's the gaming design, if it's too hard for you to do it at the moment, try doing something else instead and come back when you are better prepared.
AJ_-_808
@MrTacoNinja, Copanele's advise is dead on. Just practice on smaller ships until you're more comfortable with the mechanics and upgrade as much of your ship as possible- it seriously makes a night & day difference. To add to his post, you should be able to do ship upgrades from inside side the ship cabin - it beats hunting down a harbor master every time. If you cant enter the ship cabin yet, you may have to advance the story a little. Also, if you haven't learned it yet, you can board a ship as soon as it's disabled, even if you're still in combat with other ships. You wont take damage from other ships while boarding a disabled one Edit - couple more tips: 1 half of the map has weaker ships to practice on, the other half has harder ships. Slave ships will always have a (I think) 2 ship escort. You can focus on one of the smaller ships, disable it, board it and salvage for repairs, then work on the next ship Edited November 3, 2019 by AJ_-_808
MrTacoNinja
@AJ: Ha ha wooow! Dude I never knew you could just simply go to your cabin to upgrade. Here I've been going back and forth to the hideout the entire time, LOL! Duh! Stupid me! And yes, the upgrades have made all the difference and now that I've gotten a hold on the naval battling mechanics I'm making everyone out at sea my bitch! ? What's odd is that what started out as me hating has become the thing I enjoy most. It's freak'n fun cruising the open seas and blasting ships to hell and back. I've never done anything like this in a video game before and to be honest it's a breath of fresh air. Thanks for all your input AJ, I appreciate it. Thanks to everyone who has offered advise. AJ_-_808
@MrTacoNinja good job on getting the hang of it. Ship combat is definitely fun once you get the hang of it. That said, if you go for AC3 and AC4 brace yourself, because there are some hard ship battles and "optional objectives" needed for trophies. Doable, but tough. MrTacoNinja
Truthfully, I think this will be my last AC game. Though the sea combat has been fun this style of gameplay as a whole just isn't me. Edited November 4, 2019 by MrTacoNinja

Apollo
Aw, man! I found the naval combat to be the most appealing part of that game and Odyssey. Easily the part I could get lost in for hours and just not have a care in the world for the destruction left behind. And I know I'm a little late to the party with your upgrading and whatnot, though I do want to point out that Freedom Cry was originally released as DLC for Black Flag before being made standalone, so it was presumed (and probably rightly so) that you knew the basics of upgrading the Jackdaw and how combat worked, because the Experto Creed was almost an exact replica. Admittedly, they could have likely done a little more of a tutorial when they broke it apart, but that would've required time and resources.

While Taliesin is right in that Unity and Syndicate do change it up a bit, I'd still skip them if Freedom Cry, which is pretty much like Black Flag and Rogue, isn't for you. Origins and Odyssey are more hack n slash/RPGs which I see you have plenty of experience with from looking at your profile. The naval gameplay in Origins is minimal. Odyssey features it big time though and while it is relatively easy to get the hang of, it's not nearly as fun as Black Flag/Rogue. Naval to me is Black Flag > Rogue > Odyssey > Origins > ACIII. (while Black Flag, Rogue, and Freedom Cry are all pretty much the same it's different ships and I don't like the Morrigan as much as the Jackdaw)
MrTacoNinja
Yeah I love RPG man, love it. It seems like the PS3 offered more of my style of RPG though compared to the PS4. Nowadays it just seems like it's nothing but side-scrolling, retro Indie trash.

It's kinda tough to compare Origins and Odyssey to something on your list, but I guess if I had to choose something to give you a sort of feel for them when it comes to combat I'd say it is only slightly similar to the latest God of War. The camera and fluidity of Odyssey looks better when I see gameplay vids of God of War. (because I haven't played that one) I honestly think if you can ignore the present day story then you'll like Origins and Odyssey. You can change the controller schematic too so that light attack is and heavy attack is . You also use the buttons for things like skills. Also, the climbing isn't as horrendous as the previous AC games if you're concerned about that.
zizimonster
Where can I find more Metal materials? Few ships have this, and it gets boring to find one that has them. ?
