What is the PS4 Lacking?

We've been really caught up in the hype lately between all the reports of Xbox One and the Playstation 4; one significantly more positive than the other, but I haven't found many [if any] detailed articles about what the console, PS4 in this case, is lacking.

1: Extra USB Ports
Come on Sony! You should've learned from the original Playstation 3, even with it's four USB ports, consumers still demanded an extra USB port or two on the back of the system, further down the line 2 of the ports were removed, and none added on the back! Now we're finally almost at the next generation, and we're still offered a measly 2 USB ports for the entire system - The least you could do is place another in the back of the console.

2: Dualshock 3 Compatibility
From the PSP-Go announcing it'd work with the DS3, all the way to my Xperia Z smart-phone, controller support always keeps me happy, and being able to use all my limited edition controllers on the PS4 would be fantastic, but instead it's been confirmed to not work. If I can get my controller working on a windows based smart-phone, or my macbook air, it's definitely not a hard ask for it to work on the PS4 too, even if it's just for Gaikai streaming, Older games, or small indie titles!

3: Steam-like Game Library
Speaking with a few gamers, one of our pet-hates is the annoyance of finding a game that we've previously purchased but isn't installed, going into the playstation store, and then scrolling through (for many) hundreds, if not into the early thousands of items to find one particular game is absolutely unnecessary, especially now with the ability to play games as they download, having all our games listed on/or in our games folders is a no-brainer!

4: Free Online Days
I can pretty much say from what we've seen, we're all OK with paying for a Playstation Plus subscription to access the online features of our games, if in return we get a better service, and as someone who's been a member of the plus system since launch, I don't want to see new gamers, be it people who've just got an internet connection, or haven't bothered to connect their consoles up before, turned away due to cost. My idea for this system can be completely worked around, but there are a few ways of doing it, free weekends, say, the last day of every month wouldn't require a plus subscription to access the online features. (Even as a subscriber, I'd be jumping online just to enjoy all the extra people playing who wouldn't otherwise be!) and by doing this, you will pick up some new subscribers on the way!

5: Colour Range!
I saw an article awhile about how there are no other confirmed colours of the Playstation 4; and how the market isn't strong enough for American/European markets. We miss out on so many limited editions, and colours because the assumption that black is all we want is always thrown down upon us. Here we really need to take note of the Xbox 360's limited edition consoles, which almost always sell out, and the variety of Nintendo's consoles which get people to purchase 3, 4, and sometimes more of the same console! especially collectors!

The only thing that I'd consider slightly bothersome is only having two USB ports, I really couldn't care less about the other things. That being said, I'm sure there will be companies that offer an adapter with more USB ports shortly after the PS4 releases. Yeah, it sucks we'll have to pay more for the slots but it isn't any sort of deal breaker, in my opinion.

It's more an OCD factor for me; I'm going to need the camera connected, and sadly once again, it has to be connected through the front of the system, cable running alongside it, to the back of the console, up through my TV Unit, behind my TV, and finally in front of the television, after all that, you can't actually hide any of the cable because it's plugged into the damn front of the console. Not a deal breaker, no, but highly irritating.

I'd happily pay another couple hundred dollars for a model with these features.

Luckily for me the consoles I have connected to my main gaming television are all on a black entertainment center so the black cables generally blend in unless you are looking for them. I do see your point though in keeping a clean look but it is something I can definitely live with. If current generation racing wheels are compatible with the PS4 (which they should be) I'll have my T500RS and Astro A50's hooked up to my PS4, and the cables from a racing wheel are a whole lot harder to hide than just about any other peripheral.

1 - Hell yeah USB ports on slim are bad enough coming from fatty and they aren't 100$ a piece

2 - You cant expect new tech to work with old controllers, every generation change has meant changing controller, and I rarely need more than one.

3 - Yes, the psn store is complete pants in regards to finding exisiting purchases

4 - That'll probably happen

5 - They have done it for each gen, but they have rarely sold, skins will be out weeks after launch in any case

PS1 controllers worked on the PS2,

GameCube controllers work on the Wii,

Wii Controllers work on the Wii U,

I'm not asking for my existing controllers to work with PS4 games, but some compatibility with say, PS3 Gaikai streaming isn't to much to ask.

None of us can truly know, but sadly I doubt the racing wheels will work at all; this kinda comes under the dualshock 3 request- if genuine previous sony controllers are being given the boot, I can't see the wheels staying. :(

It's missing a youporn app :(

"TubeGalore" - Get on it.

I sincerely hope that isn't the case, especially with Sony and GT partnering up with Thrustmaster for a $600 wheel. I'm hoping that since it is a wheel and won't really make use of the DualShock 4 technology anyway, they'll be compatible. They connect via USB and Sony has confirmed current gen headsets that connect via USB work so I don't see why they'l leave out wheels.

I guess we won't know until launch either as I doubt Sony will make an announcement for the small market that uses racing wheels.

We don't even really know what they will be doing with Gaikai or when the service will be launched, so it's kind of irrelevant with the whole touchscreen stuff. Ps1 to Ps2 there wasn't 'so' much upgrades to functionality compared to recent gen.

Let's meet down the middle;

The PS1 controller was only effective on a few games on the PS2.

The DS2 controller triggers and buttons sensed your level of input but the DS1 controller buttons were an on/off switch in comparison. This made many of the games much more difficult to play. Then there was the fact that the DS1 lead was about a metre shorter then the DS2 one. Oh and the grey controllers didn't really go well with the lovely black PS2.

I am sure that I read someplace that the button sensitivity that exists in the DS3 wont apply in the DS4 so this could be the reason for the lack of compatibility.

Umm... Is that the PS4 camera (PlayStation®4 Eye) your talking about? Because i think it's connected via the AUX port in the back of the console.

But yea, a USB port in the back would have been nice...

Well what i like the most so far is the little things we have seen like: Controller charges while the console is off, you will most likely be able to litsen to music while you're playing a game (Music unlimited or something), party chat, you do not have to buy Playstation plus to be online, and while in split screen when the players change places then their screens will ajust to where the controller is.

As far as what it is lacking isn't such a big problem, for the usb ports you could buy a gadget that will allow you to have more slots (I have one right now that allows 4 more slots).

If the dualshock 3 would be compatible with it then there would most likely be games you won't be able to play (Even though i have 5 of them which i'll still keep around for the Playstation 3). Also keep in mind that the controllers from Playstation 1 to playstation 2 were not changed very much.

I think that the steam-like library will definitely happen just not right now (We all know what happened to the xbone).

The playstation plus subscription is for those who are serious about their games and online experience, it's also been confirmed that you do not need a subscription to sign in and party chat with your friends.

That will probably happen later as well, because as far as i know the colours are the least of their worries right now. But what i want to know is if i could change colour on the blue led light on the console?

Cameras need to be connected on the back.

I have no issue with USB ports.

And DS3 controller aren't used because it wouldn't be good business, and it doesn't have a touchpad.

Same thing with free weekends, maybe one free week but that's it.

My only issue is that other than Knack there isn't any platformer.

To me it's just a release date it's lacking and proper pricing of the games over here in the UK.  USB isn't a problem and I wonder what else you plan to do with like more USB slots anyways.  I'm sure we may get free online days.. MS does it with Xbox Live every so often, free Gold Weekends, I'll be surprised if Sony doesn't attempt something like that, it's too soon to say whether it's lacking that yet or not, Sony hasn't stated any of their plans for that area.

I want it to play all three previous generations of Sony Software

I'm sure they could make a machine capable of that.

It just depends on how many people would be willing to pay the £600+ that it would probably cost. I'm guessing not many.

So make it then. Build it and they will buy it...

I'm not so sure that is true. One of the reasons the PlayStation 3 was so expensive was because of it's PS2 emulation and we know that the PS3 had a terrible launch in part because if its very high launch price. If the PS4 played PS3 games, it would basically need a PS3 inside of it as well as the PS4 hardware which would not only make it very expensive, they would have to make the console much bigger to deal with all the extra heat. In the grand scheme of things there aren't a whole lot of people who regularly use the backwards compatibility features on their consoles (except maybe if you're a Nintendo fan and have no other games to play) so it is better in the long run to get rid of the backwards compatibility and save everyone money. Plus, if it is anything like the 60gb launch PS3, the PS2 backwards compatibility wasn't nearly as good as actually playing the game on a PS2, which is one of the reasons I didn't mind losing backwards compatibility with the Slim models.
