A couple of tricks I've used include:

1. On some routes travelling through the pit-stop may be a quicker option. In particular I was having trouble losing speed on hard turns that had no KERs. In those cases I found the pit stop to be easier. Maybe a little longer, but I didn't lose speed.

2. Ignore your first lap. Save your boost until the end of the lap and use it just as you're about to cross the finish line. You'll consume the boost, get a "head start" on the next lap and then be granted a boost for starting a new lap. Also, if you feel you're not going to earn a gold on the lap then repeat this step for each additional lap.

3. If you're going up onto a boost chain (series of red boost pads) and you have an opportunity to start it with a KERs boost, aim to get a red/full KERs boost as it will carry through the boost chain.
