I Always Wanted to Start my Own Religion ~ Agatha Knife

 

Agatha Knife is a disturbingly cute point and click adventure game. The story is about a 7 year old girl named Agatha Knife who lives in a butcher shop and has insomnia. Agatha loves animals and eating meat. She doesn't like how the animals get scared before she slaughters them. Also, her family's butcher shop is having financial difficulty since there are no customers. Agatha's mum brings her along to pray for a solution at church. Agatha gets bored, wanders about and signs up for a program to create her own religion to solve all of her problems (except the insomnia).

 

The game is quite simple in the controls and gameplay department. You use the left stick to move Agatha around and L2 is the run button. You can't run inside buildings but most buildings are small enough that not being able to run is a non-issue. You control a virtual pointer with the right stick; you must have the virtual mouse pointer over the thing you want to interact with.  will have Agatha look at a person/obeject.  is the interact/talk/use item button. You also have a inventory screen that can be accessed with . The controls took me awhile to get use to and I would accidentally look at things instead of interacting with them all the time. 

 

The puzzles in this game are simple and I was able to figure all but one out on my own. The one I couldn't figure out was very cryptic. You are allowed to bypass some puzzles by spending in-game money you collected. Money doesn't any other useful purpose except getting a few trophies for spending and not spending your money. The game is very good at telling you exactly what your objective. There is also a character that will remind you of your objective if you forget and give you hints. The hints were not very helpful in my experience. 

 

The writing was very enjoyable to read and the humor in the game is a little dark. There is no voice acting but that didn't bother me. Agatha Knife has a unique feature where you can change the games font between cursive and a more traditional font if you can't read cursive.

 

The game's world is pretty small but well built. There were many instances when I had to run across the entire world and back (it's only 6 screens, not counting interiors). There was no way to fast travel between specific locations. The game is a bit short (5 hours on a blind first playthrough give or take) but the length felt perfect for to me.

 

I enjoyed playing Agatha Knife and the only issues I had with the game were minor nitpicks. The jokes made me laugh a few times.

So this is a game I'd been meaning to play for like years now.  I got it ages ago on Xbox 360, but stopped really playing that and then got lucky enough to score a used physical copy on PS3.  It's definitely an older game and not exactly easy to find and it cost me $30 even for a used copy (though my used copy was in great condition and still has the manual and everything).  In fact next month it will have been out for 10 years.  The game has really aged well too.  It still looks quite stunning for a PS3 game.  About the only thing I'd say is lacking between this and a PS4 game is how smooth and crisp the graphics on PS4 can be.  It's really good very nice graphics for a game that came out in 2010.  It's an action RPG and the gameplay is also quite smooth, unlike a lot of action RPGs where I feel it is a bit clunky and unresponsive at times, and sadly those action RPGs are way more popular.  I'm very picky about action RPG gameplay, and this one meets my standards.

 

Definitely gave a very interesting first impression too.  Once you boot the game up and get past the loading screen, you hear a girl cussing out a book and then see an intro movie with some gorgeous music that does a great job of showing off actual gameplay.  Seriously, just watch that and you can get a great impression of this game.  Included a video of it, it's the first about 3 minutes of this if anyone just wants to see for themselves.

So pretty much the game has you playing a a father with a sick daughter named Yonah.  Nothing is said about what happened to her mother, but she's definitely not around.  There's first a prologue that lets you dive into the gameplay and fight a boss while protecting the girl.  It's actually pretty hard, I got my butt kicked by the first boss like three times before I got down the gameplay well enough to get past it.  The whole bit is kind of weird and I still don't know what relation it has to the story.  Overall the hardest part about bosses is that there is usually some weak point you have to hit and you have to figure out what that is.  You can't just hack at it blindly like many action RPGs

 

After that, you are in a village with your character and his daughter live.  You find out he does odd jobs for people to support the daughter.  You start off doing some of those until she goes missing and you have to go off and find her.  When you do, you find a weird book calling itself Grimoire Weiss and the true nature of Yonah's illness is revealed, it's a terrible illness that has no cure and is fatal.  However, the Grimoire offers a potential idea to handle that, find the Sealed Verses and deal with its counterpairt Grimoire Noir and she may be saved.  Or so the main character thinks, the book actually isn't quite so sure but joins and helps the main character.  It's actually pretty interesting how a book can actually be an interesting character, but Weiss offers snarky commentary along with hints as needed.

 

So pretty much you go from place to place trying to find these Sealed Verses along with doing random quests.  I've gotten to the point where I've beaten three bosses and had my first party member join, Kaine, who is the foul-mouthed girl from the intro bit.  I swear, her mouth is probably half the reason the game has a M rating, the other half being the fact that it is pretty brutally violent at points and if your character gets hit or hits something, it definitely bleeds, a lot.  However, I appreciate the fact that it's not a game that is gory for shock value, it's just being realistic because this game completely does not pull any punches about the fact that its world isn't a nice place and life is hard for a single dad with a sick daughter who only has his skills with a weapon, grit and determination as far as skills to try and support her.  It's also quite refreshing for a JRPG to have an older protagonist who is a father since normally such games feature teens.

 

But one thing I definitely think the game has going for it is really interesting designs for the bosses.  The story and characters are great.  The music is great and the gameplay is great.  The game hits every sweet spot and does it well.  Definitely would consider this game a gem that should be played by any action RPG fan and is very worth it to try and get a hold of if you still have access to a PS3.  Though hopefully a remaster will be released someday for PS4 to make it easier to get, because yeah, it's pretty hard to find on PS3 and it's physical release only.

Game #4 - Toukiden 2 - Progress Update

 

 

I'm going to get this out of the way early. This is essentially a Monster Hunter clone.

 

You create and customize your character (a fair amount of options for that btw), pick 1 of 12 weapon types and then you're off doing a basic tutorial. The story is kind of meh. You wake up and have amnesia, because of course you do. Now you're in a foreign village, become a member of said village and go out to rid the world of demons

 

You can change to a different weapon before each mission and the same goes for the Mitamas (it's a class system). Those offer active and passive abilities, that boil down to buffs for the most part.

There is the option to buy, craft, reforge or improve weapons and armor. That is probably going to be essential, as there is no leveling system. The only thing that levels is the Mitama, whenever it's being used, which only unlocks new abilities.

 

The game has an option to play solo or in a multiplayer lobby, I chose the former. So I have AI companions instead of actual people in my party. The party consists of up to 4 members who are assigned a Mitama type.

MP doesn't offer story progression, so all you have available is sort ofbounty missions, which run on a timer (usually 90 minutes, which is plenty of time). It seems that materials carry over to your single player game though, so that's pretty neat. IN single player you also have open world missions as an option, so theres quite a lot to do. It does however seem like the missions are all farily geenric. It's been either kill X amount of enemies or find X amount of items.

 

 

I've put almost 7 hours in by now and feel like I've made no progress. I've still been doing tutorials until now, because the game decided that I wasn't qualified to learn game mechanics, before I finished several missions that didn't teach anything. I'm hoping tthat I actually get to make proper progress today.

Well, this is delayed. Lol. Took a day off yesterday, and didn't really play anything. Watched some movies on my Starz app instead. Today is also off to a slow start, having to run around trying to find things after I got up. Gone are the days of just getting everything at one store, with people going crazy and buying more than they probably need.. But I did actually start RDR2 on Day 1 and play for a bit, so... 

 

Game #4, Day 1

Red Dead Redemption II

 

So, right off the bat, things aren't looking too good for this gang of outlaws. It seems they botched a robbery, resulting in some guys getting separated, one getting shot and dying, and the rest of you taking shelter in an abandoned town in terrible winter weather. Snow, my favorite. ._. They also are traveling with women and children, which is kinda weird. 

 

Going out in search of supplies, you save a woman named Sadie whose husband had been murdered by another gang, and she had been in hiding since. And later on, you save John Marston (the protag from the previous game) from a pack of wolves. Instead of him, you play as another member of his gang in this one, Arthur Morgan. You also learn how to hunt, rob a train, and then Chapter 1 ends. With the gang leaving winter wonderland, and heading for greener pastures. That's as far as I got.

 

The gameplay is kind of a mixed bag, so far. The shooting is fine, and you have an ability called Dead Eye that lets you slow down time and target enemies. But hunting with the bow? Not so much.. You don't have a lot of time to line up a shot, since you have an energy bar that drains and makes you put the bow down, all while the aiming reticle moves on its own. I hope upgrades make it easier, or I'm not gonna like hunting. 

 

I also ran into my first bug, I think, when robbing the train. You're supposed to get on it, but Lenny got in the damn way. I had to walk down to the river and drown myself, because I didn't know what would happen if I quit out, and there was no option to restart the checkpoint. This spawned me in the dumb train, and I was able to continue. But jeez, a bug like that this early? Hope that isn't a sign of things to come...

 

Time played: 2 hours? Really hate when there's no time played stat.

Game #3, Final Review

 

 

428: Shibuya Scramble

 

This game is absolutely insane and I am loving it so far. It is a live action visual novel. The story starts with a kidnapping case and goes wild from there. You go through the stories of five different characters whose choices affect the other characters routes. If one of your characters causes a traffic jam it can lead another character to be late to whatever destination they were heading to. The game is set up in one hour sections. You have to complete each hour with all the characters to progress to the next hour. There are plenty of bad ends but you can easily plop into whatever time you have already unlocked in with another character. The bad ends also give hints to how you can get out of them and what character caused it. They can also be pretty entertaining.

 

I have put about twelve hours into this and absolutely love it. I think the game goes from ten o'clock to six o'clock. I am currently about to start the three o'clock section. The gameplay is pretty simple. You choose one of a few options in standard visual novel style multiple times during an ingame hour. Characters are pretty wacky and the main story is fairly interesting so far. The music is also pretty decent. The humour is pretty good for the most part although there are a few misses.  I will put in an example of of what the game looks while playing although the pic itself will have no spoilers.

I will definately be continuing this and will probably finish it before the month is out. I could talk more about the characters and plot but want to avoid giving spoilers. It can take a while to fully kick off but it has been a really enjoyable experience so far. Things could change by the end but I recommend it to others.

I kind of regret not going with 5 and deciding on the one Vita game earlier.  6 is great for doing an even amount per platform, but if you pick a bunch of longer games it definitely feels more like I'm falling behind.  At least my later games have been a bit more reasonable with trophies compared to my first two very stingy games and I should be able to finish my next game in the 5 days since it's shorter and I get to start it as my weekend starts.

 

But nothing stops you from doing a bonus game if you want to.  A few of us have done a bonus game.

Speaking of Falling behind. I've jst barely finished the first chapter in Toukiden 2 and still feel like I got very little prgoress done after 10 hours. I'll be swapping out my other RPG with a less time-consuming game. (As such Beholder 2 will take the spot of Moonlighter.

In the interest of keeping up with the event,  I have to make some changes to my games. Danganronpa & Horizon Zero Dawn are getting dropped while Exist Archive & Ni no Kuni  are moved to starting dates of the 22nd & 27th, respectively. I've just got too much going on between RL & all the massively long games I've already started to maintain 10 games this round. My goal is to catch up on my Bad Apple Wars & Spider-Man reviews sometime this weekend.

Game #4 - Toukiden 2 - Final Impressions

I'm still going to play a few hours tonight, but I'll wrap my views on the game already regardless.

 

 

Visually it looks alright. Better than most JRPGs, but still not great. The enemies are the weakest link in that regards as the enemy models don't look great, except for the boss monsters. When it comes to the sound it's fine for the most part, although sound effects are way too loud and pretty much have to be adjusted. There is very sporadic voice acting and it's only in japanese. There are english subs, but there have been several occasions, where they didn't provide any subs for what was being said.

 

I'm only in Chapter 3 and up until now I've been drip-fed tutorial after tutorial. I think they put too much stuff in the game to be honest. Tutorials for each weapon, tutorials for each Mitama type, how to craft or reforge weapons/armor, how to send a minion out to gather materials, how to synthesize, cleanse areas, take baths, assign abilities. It seems like it never ends.

 

The gameplay boils down to completing missions. 3 variants of side missions and the story mission will keep you busy for days. You objective is essentially to push the demon invasion back by defeating the bosses in each area and closing demon portals. This makes the regions safer allowing for more and better equipment to be sold by vendors.

 

So you run across the lands with 3 companions (more unlock throughout the story, but only  can be active at one time) kill a ton of demons until you eventually reach the boss. Those boss fights tend to take a while, as there is no leveling you have to rely on upgrading your weapons. Problem is you need materials to upgrade those and said materials drop from enemies and of course the bosses, You are encouraged to sever the boss enemies limbs to get them as materials. Unfortunately those limbs grow back almost instantly, which kind of eliminates the potential for funny moments. There also a relationship building aspect with each of the companions, which you need to take on missions in order to form stronger bonds.

The bosses, will eventually become regular enemies walking around the map, but they will remain absolute damage sponges. That's something that could get old really quick, due to the whole necessity for the material farming.

 

There is also a special vision mode, which is the only way to see how much HP an emeiy has left and how damaged their limbs are. That's a terrible design choice. You can't alway be in that mode, because it won't regenerate the meter you need for stronger attacks. Furthermore it's not pleasant to look atfor long periods of time anyway.

 

I have encountered one glitch so far. Occasionally, the mission targets don't spawn forcing you to restart the mission to fix it.

 

 

It's a fun game so far, but definitely worse than a proper Monster Hunter game. Too much fluff in the story, too much crap to keep in mind and some questionable design choices end up holding this game back. Im still giving it a at this point, but that may quickly change if it becomes tedious.

 

Update:

 

I've decided to drop my score for this one to a , because the game shafted me twice just now. Which reminded me that it had been screwing me over a few times by now. Alright first things first, I forgot to mention that hit detection is off quite a bit in both ways. I've had enemies still hit me when I wasn't even remotely near them and I haven't been able to hit enemies on several occasions (keep in mind the enemies in question are massive).

 

Anyway, I just had a boss fight that took me 20 minutes (as most bosses do), then the story progressed with cutscenes and then it threw me into another boss fight. During this fight I died and my AI companions started ressing me, but then they stopped because they had some weird collision detection going on. To revive you don't need to be on top of the person that died, as there is actual a fairly large radius. Yet they kept trying to position themselves where the path was blocked. So instead of them ressing me, the timer ran out.

 

Now who wants to venture a guess where the last save was registered (there's manual and auo saving)?

It put me back to my last manual save, which was near the first boss, which had happened almost 50 minutes ago.

 

Since you can't manually save when in combat nor during cutscenes, one would assume auto save would do it's thing and save sometime between the two boss fights. Well, not this game.

Game #3 - Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match

Honestly, I don't even know why this game is in my backlog, as I know nothing about the series it is from at all, having never played a game or watched an episode featuring any of these characters, ever. I do find that a good number of games I do this to actually turn up something good. It might be in the end, though nothing has surprised me from it yet.

 

Based on what I have played through in the plot and pieced together, this game takes place in a world where girls fighting in tanks is considered a normal thing here. Miho Nishizumi, the main character (she's the one in the picture above), transferred into Oarai High School, somehow became the commander of their tank squadron, and saved their school from closure by winning a national tournament of some sort. The game takes place after all those events have happened, and the characters who took place in the battles between Oarai and the others are reminiscing and commentating over what happened in those battles, which you play out through the story mode. I have played through a third of the story mode so far.

 

I expected something similar to Valkyria Chronicles just without the infantry portion, and I got something similar to that. There's a number of different scenarios, including Annihilation (defeat all the enemies, obviously), Target/Flag (defeat a certain number or a certain commander's tank), Defense (survive for a certain amount of time), and Destination (reach a certain point on the map). Story mode also lets you choose between different sides on the battlefield, so you can experience the battle from a different perspective when replaying (and yes, playing as everyone in each Story mode scenario is a trophy). One thing I've noticed is that my allies tend to complete the scenario before I get a chance to do much, which is actually pretty annoying! It obviously doesn't happen in any Destination matches, but one Flag match my tank got stuck on a rail going backwards and somehow my allies defeated the Flag tank before I even saw it. Yeah, ok. There are special skills that you can trigger when you fill up a bar by either moving or shooting other tanks that gives different effects depending on the character that you are currently controlling.

 

Also in the menu there are a few other battle choices. Free Battle allows you to make a match however you want. I made a flag battle 1v1 and then spent five minutes looking for the enemy in a large area. That was probably a mistake. There are a number of Extra Missions, which the trophy guide says that some are recreations of some of the anime's battles that I assume are not covered in the story mode. I haven't done any of these yet, and you have to do them on all difficulties because the trophies don't stack. Domination Battle has you take one school's team and face off against five other randomized teams. Again, doing all of these is required for a trophy. There's also an online mode, but I doubt a two-year old game like this one has anyone playing online so I haven't even bothered to look at it.

 

While I do have some problems controlling the tanks at the beginning, it isn't bad for my first experience with the series. I'll probably play at least through the story mode shortly after KYC ends.

Got the most % from any game so far so the difference did not drop as much as it could have been. Going to move on to the lone Vita game on my list next and then finish up my list with the two PS3 games.

I only managed to get through the DLC Prequel for right now. I was distracted by other games.

 

The Good

• An interesting setting of a film noir 30's style detective adventure in a world where a teddy bear talks and robots are autonomous. You play as Teddy and a human named Flint as they set out to solve who killed a robot accountant. Interesting idea for a story. There are some fun pop culture references in the game. Especially with the cars in the junkyard. I have good hopes that the main episodes will flesh out these characters more...

The Bad

• Good grief was the voice acting bad. It felt like I was listening to House of the Dead or the original Resident Evil. Especially the person who voiced Flint. The robots were less robotic than that kids voice. Also, why did they make Teddy such a curmudgeon. It was a bit grating at first him putting down everything you came across.

The Ugly

• Now, this is only in the ugly category because of the user (me). I did not quite get what the story was trying to convey until the end credits. I know there was the scene in the bar where Flint (robotically) told his story of why his sister wasn't there with Teddy. It wasn't until the end credits that I pieced together that

  this was all the boy Flint's imagination trying to cope with what he had done to cause his sister to be in the hospital.

   

The Verdict

I didn't get around to completing the main episodes, so this has all been based on the DLC prequel. Which didn't impress me all that much. So I am hoping the main episodes will provide a better story to keep me interested.

Well, I never did get back to the single player. After spending two days not playing anything, I just decided to jump into the multiplayer. ...And what a fucking mistake that was. Part of me wishes I could go back in time, and stop myself from buying this. :/ 

 

After getting a couple of easy trophies, I attempted to get the one for completing a Free Roam mission with a posse. Well, that led to me joining up with randoms, and just kind of doing whatever they were. Had no real idea how best to go about it. Ended up taking hours, and playing with a guy with the sunniest disposition you've ever seen. That is sarcasm, he was an ass. Barking orders at everyone, and kinda being a dick about things. Not sure why I stuck around as long as I did. 

 

Once that was finally done, I went back to playing on my own. Hunting various animals to get a couple of other trophies. I did find you can hunt with guns, assuming the single player isn't any different. So, maybe I won't have to deal with that stupid bow. There are also many critters in the game to hunt. Rabbits, foxes, wolves, birds, alligators, bison, bears, and more. Then you can sell their skins for cash, craft things with materials you get, and cook their meat. Eating probably helps with something, but I didn't really bother during my time online. 

 

The map is fricking huge! With tons of side missions scattered about. There is a form of fast travel by train, but you have to spend a bit of money to use it. Your horse can only run fast for so long before it runs out of stamina, and then you have to let it recharge. So you may really want to make use of it, if you need to travel quite a ways. 

 

And now we get to what I spent most of today doing: being the MVP in 3 competitive multiplayer games. Hoooooly shit, this is an awful trophy. Especially now. You can't do what people did when the game came out. People are better at the game, and have better horses. Winning races is going to be a lot harder. What I tried to do, was get them in matches where you capture and take over areas on the map. By staying in the circle of an area your team has taken over, you can get many objective points. Which I guess counts for more than getting kills, or taking over areas. I got one when my team got slaughtered and lost, so yeah.

 

But it's a pain in the ass, because the match can end too soon if a team captures every point at once. Or you keep getting killed, and can't wrack up the time spent in the circle. It's also random what game mode you play, so you have to keep searching and leaving until you find it, or play games until it pops up.. I only managed to get two MVPs this way. The last one was kind of funny.

 

I was in another mode, where the objective is to grab the other team's items, and take them back to your base. Capture the flag, basically. My teammates decided to go on a killing spree, I guess? They were just murdering everyone on the other side, and... no one seemed to be trying to win. So, I just started picking them up and running them back. Lol. Ended up with the MVP, since no one else even tried to do the objective. 

 

I then decided to try out a few races for the hell of it. Best I came in was 3rd, but I was amused by the couple with mics. They kept talking about how hot my character was between races. Lol. I don't know about that, but you can judge if they were crazy or not:

At least kinda ended things on a high note. But ugh, I still am not done with the multiplayer. Have to reach Rank 50, and I'm only 17 after all that. But I won't have to play anymore competitive, and get repeatedly shot in the face. ._. I don't know if everyone is just godly at the game, or just have more powerful guns/equipment. But it's like my shots do such little damage, and they drop me in one. .-. 

 

So yeah, I am really glad to be moving on this time. I'll give it an optimistic , hoping the single player is a much better experience.

 

Time played: No idea. More than 10 hours, though. Probably closer to 15-20.

Here's hoping this one is better. I loved VIII, back in the day. But it's the only numbered Dragon Quest I've played, and it's been awhile. I did quite like Heroes and bought the sequel, despite its much lengthier Platinum time. Those are completely different genres, though.

Dead by Daylight is an interesting one. Either you’ll really enjoy it, or dislike the slow & punishing nature of the game and hop off after a match or the queue times will kill you.

Game #5 - Beholder 2 - Preview

As far as I know, this is a russian developer has only made the Beholder games Unfortunately it seems that this game isn't selling well, as it has been on sales for a fiver shortly after release.

 

I've played the first one a while back and loved it, after having some initial trouble  getting through it due to the time constraints.THe first game was seomwhat of a management sim that had you spy on/denounce/help your neighbours as you wore working for a totalitarian government.

 

I'm assuming this one is going to be in a similar fashion, which owuld be great. If there are no more time constraints, that would be a bonus. Looking forward to jump into this one.

My boyfriend and I actually have Dead By Daylight downloaded and we’re looking to give it a try but we’ve not got around to it yet ? We ended up playing Journey to the Savage Planet first which has been really fun, still need to finish off some things for the plat though 

 

Though real life has bitten me in the bum this month so the whole challenge hasn’t really gone to plan and I’ve only managed to play my first game ? I’ve been juggling my uni work along with my actual job (which has included overtime now that the virus has really broken out in the UK) plus a bereavement in the family has meant that the few hours of game time I’ve had I haven’t really felt like trying out new games. I did try God of War 3 last night but I was really tired so I only got as far as the first save point before I got off ?

 

I’ve been enjoying everyone else’s posts though and seeing first impressions of games that I necessarily wouldn’t have looked at before. Sorry my participation has been an E at best ?

Game #5 Review

 

Bad Apple Wars

On her way to the first day of high school the protag is killed in a traffic accident. She wakes up in front of another school, being greeted by a man in a rabbit mask who claims she’s late for the opening ceremony. The protag breaks away from the strange man & makes a run for the front gates. She ends up transported back to the school. This process repeats several times until she realizes there’s no way off the grounds & reluctantly joins Mr. Rabbit Mask at the opening ceremony.

 

Another new student (who must have died on the same day) is in attendance. & this is where the story takes an even stranger turn, but starts to make sense title wise. The  school  appears to be divided by war between the Good Apples, rule abiding students, & the exact opposites, the Bad Apples. To graduate with a chance at returning to the world of the living, students must remain Good Apples. Essentially that means becoming practically soulless, a mindless drone who puts in no effort & has no interests. The Bad Apples refuse to give up on  their sense of self. They take every opportunity to break the rules, like by crashing the opening ceremony. But the school has an enforcing group known as the Prefects  to take on the Bad Apples. Members have the power to temporarily restructure students into mindless drones by smacking them on the head.

 

The only choice I've been able to make up to chapter 2 is whether to be a Good or Bad Apple. I haven't encountered a single dialogue option yet, not a great sign. None of the characters are catching my interest at the moment besides White Mask so I went with the Good Apples for this first playthrough. & now the protag has been recruited into the Prefect squad, who by the way, are not allowed to graduate from the school. & that's about as far as I've gotten. I haven’t given it a rating yet since I didn’t get far at all. Before the event is up I’d like to have a route finished.

 

Game #6 Review

 

Marvel’s Spider-Man

This Spider-Man game is perfection. Can’t I just wrap it up there? It nostalgically reminds me of the PS2 one. Though if I were to start that one back up now, I’d likely be cringing. There were so few polygons then.

 

The open world setting & all of the collectibles have been a major distraction to actually playing the story. Basically I've done the tutorial mission to lock up the Kingpin Fisk. & a few others that would indicate someone is trying to take over Fisk's old assets. Also, Parker is working for Dr. Octavius (I'll just wait for that time bomb to go off).

 

The game has unlock-able suits & extra gadgets to use. Combat flows really well like a Batman game. & I’m loving the witty dialogue they put in. It's a perfect game to kick back & enjoy. I'm very glad I picked up the complete edition for this.

 

 

Update on game #3 Drive Girls, I've finished the main story. It didn't get any better & will drop to a score of 4/10 for boringly over used areas, missions & enemies.  It required some grinding through multiplayer modes just to reach the ending as natural progression didn't earn me enough credits to increase the character's stats. I might put it aside for now since I'll be starting Exist.

Decided I'm going to go ahead and write up a review of this one because I don't want to accidentally give a bunch of spoilers and I've got the general idea of how the gameplay works now.  So pretty much Crossing Souls is a game that is a bit of a hybrid between a point and click adventure and a Zelda game, though it leans far more towards being like a Zelda game.  You start off as a boy named Chris and it's the beginning of summer vacation for him.  It takes place in a town in California in 1986.  The game definitely is more of a retro style with cartoon cutscenes.

 

So the previous night a storm happened and knocked out power and it seems a bunch of weird stuff started happening.  Your little brother Kevin tells you to gather your friends and meet him at a the treehouse.  When you get there, he tells of a crazy story about what he found nearby.  When you go investigate you end up finding a weird stone that lets you see the dead and interact with them.

 

As you navigate about there are monsters to fight ranging from stuff like spiders and rats to nasty ghosts and zombies.  You have a party of five total characters and each character uses a different weapon and has a different skill for navigating the terrain.  For example, Chris is good at climbing stuff, but Matt has a device that lets him glide while he's jumping.  Then you have Charlie who can catapult across ravines by using poles.  All of these various skills are needed to navigate the terrain and progress in the game.  Plus you have different fighting styles ranging from using a laser gun, using a jump rope as a whip or hitting enemies with a baseball bat.  Like a Zelda game, your characters have a life bar measured in hearts and you can pick up hearts to recover from killing monsters.  If you get low, you can swap to a party member who has more life as long as you have one left.

 

Of course the game has a bunch of various missables and collectables to go find.  The missables are random little events you can do and the collectables are all in out of the way treasure chests that often require a bit of creative thinking and searching to find.  There is a trophy guide that covers all the missables and the plat seems overall like it will be pretty easy as long as I keep an eye out for the missables.

 

So while the game is short and easy, it also isn't an expensive game.  Regular price for it is $15 and that's a solid price for the amount of material and story you get and the game does go on sale from time to time.  The concept is pretty neat and I'm interested in the story and how it will unfold.  Since it is shorter, I'll probably end up getting the plat before its time to move on to my next game.  Definitely would recommend this one.  It's solid, it's got good gameplay, it's not difficult and has a good story.  It's quite fun and doesn't feel like its too short or too long.

Yikes! I was hoping your review would prod me into buying this. Now I'm not so sure.  I can handle MP trophies if it's a time investment; like in Battlefield I where you need to level up a few times. You might need to put in a few hours, but the trophy will certainly be achieved at some point. But I'm not sure I have the stamina for the MVP trophy. 

I'm still curious how you find the SP campaign. If you find it redundant (i.e. AC Origins), I'll avoid this one.

Haha, yeah. I might have just went about it the wrong way. Apparently, if I had done the grind to Rank 50 first, I could have used a horse with unlimited stamina to easily win races. But I hadn't started really working for that, because I didn't have enough gold for the role everyone recommends. You'll either need to grind for that first, or drop $5 to just get the gold and begin.

Just touching base, I hope to get my Game #6 review up later today.  That said, Game #7: Record of Agarest War, that I was meant to be playing the last 3 days went untouched due to RL so I'm just going to skip it.  Hopefully, I'll have time to get into Game #8 today (won't say what it is yet).  Work has just been insane with all the Real World stuff that has been going on but we think we have got all the modifications our current environment has forced us to put in place done so I'll cross my fingers and hope for a little less spinning from the powers that be.

Game #5, Day 1

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

 

I don't know what all is going on in that opening cutscene. Lol. My one constant thought was, it looks really good, though. There's a woman with her daughter and a baby, running from a triplet of headless horsemen. The woman hands the little girl the baby, and tries to draw them away. But only two go after her, leaving the last to jump the girl. After that, there's a gap. The baby somehow ended up floating down the river, and who knows what happened to the woman or the little girl. A kindly old man hears the baby's cries, and picks him up. 

 

Flash forward quite a few years, and the baby has grown into a young man. This is who you play as, and get to give a name when starting up the game. Accompanied by his childhood friend, a young woman named Gemma, and a dog, they climb a mountain as some kind of "coming of age" trial. Oddly enough, the girl is just kinda there to toss healing items, and the dog is who actually joins you in fighting monsters. 

 

When you reach the top, a giant bird attacks you, and Gemma is knocked off the edge of the mountain. But you grab her hand just in time! But now you're trying to pull her up, and the bird is coming in for another attack. Things are looking grim.. Until the mark on your hand starts to glow, and lightning is summoned from the sky, turning the giant bird into roasted chicken. o.O 

 

With the trial complete, you return to town. Your adoptive mother tells you the truth of your origins, and I guess the old man that pulled you from the river is no longer among the living. :'( But you are supposed to be the Luminary reincarnated. The Luminary was some mythical being that saved the world long ago. And so you set off on a journey to save it again, I guess. Making Gemma cry that her friend (maybe more?) is leaving. 

 

And that's the story, so far. I'm travelling on my own, without even the dog. Your character doesn't talk at all, so all discussion is pretty one-sided. The graphics probably aren't as nice as that opening cutscene. But they're bright and colorful, and look nice. The monsters look too cute. I feel like I should be playing Pokémon and capturing these things, not needlessly slaughtering them.  You can avoid fighting them, since they're shown on the map.  But you'll need to level up, at some point.

 

The gameplay is that of a turn-based RPG. But you can move around the battlefield, while waiting for your turn. So far, pretty typical stuff. Attacking enemies with regular attacks, or spells which consume MP. Healing with items, as needed. And then you level up and buy new skills with the points you get from doing so. There is a thing in the game, where your character gets a temporary power boost, though. It happens when you take enough damage, I think. Reminds me of the Kaio-ken technique from DBZ. I don't know if future party members will function like the dog, or if that was just because it was the beginning of the game and something of a tutorial section. But he did everything on his own, and you only controlled yourself. 

 

Towns are full of people to talk to, and shops where you can buy items/equipment. You save the game at churches (or statues at campgrounds). It does autosave some, too. There are also people who give sidequests scattered about. The ones I've done were very simple. Grabbing an item in town, or saving a cat stuck on a roof by just talking it. Kitty litter as a reward. :/ 

 

And that's about it. But it seems pretty good, early on.

Torment is an RPG that is nothing like anything I have played before. It is like putting Pen and Paper Roleplaying game with all the mechanics of dice rolling and attribute points into an incredibly detailed and realised world which enjoys using dialogue rather than using battle mechanics.

 

Torment: Tides of Numenera is set in the Planescape Universe which has existed in the Roleplaying world since the early 90's under the same brand that made Magic: The Gathering. It has large and deep lore that is very word heavy and infers that you dive deep into the understanding of the world to know how everything works. Going into the game, I had no idea as to what I was expecting, but after reading around 3 hours of text and making decisions, I still have no idea how far I am through the game and no idea what my end goal truly is.

 

The game starts with your character, the Cast-Off, answering questions to fit a specific type of person you might play as. Your character transitions to a room that gives you an understanding of what the attributes, actions and dialogue relate to and how it shapes your character. Upon entering the world, you find that you were falling through the sky and landed in a room with two very different NPC characters. They give you a rundown on what you may be and why you fell into their lap, but beyond that, this is a voyage of discovery and understanding the world and seeing what you can do.

 

There is an unseen force that keeps changing throughout the game when you make certain dialogue choices, Tides they are called. So far I have encountered, Red, Blue, Silver and Gold Tides. I haven't got a true understanding of what they do, but I believe they will affect how interactions work later in the story. At a general guess, Red is for Conflict or Passionate answers, Blue is for Diplomatic or Measured answers, Gold is for Truth or Messiah-like answers and Silver is for Down to Earth or Direct answers. The issue is that unless you really pay attention to the dialogue or have a direct breakdown of all the conversations you can have around the world, the Tides will change all the time and you won't have any clue whether it will be good or bad.

 

I have only had the Tutorial fight in the game or Crisis as it is called. It was Strategy/Turn-Based and was incredibly clunky to use. I get the impression that the designers put it in the game not expecting anyone to really use it, but had to put a conflict somewhere because it could happen in-game and shoehorned the mechanics to fit.

 

Trophy-wise this game will take you a long time to get anywhere and most likely multiple playthroughs at least unless you make the optimal decisions in-game. I made a decision out of the blue and earnt a trophy related to the Changing God that I wasn't expecting because the focus in the game is built on the story and not around you just playing the game for the trophies sake. Less than 150 people have finished this game to collect all the trophies and even then, only 10% even finish the game.

 

Overall, the game has a lot to dive into. The lore and storytelling are incredibly rich and detailed. The environments are well realised and easy to navigate and fun to poke around in. But I'm not looking forward to anymore combat in this game if it's anything like the tutorial fight. This game is not for the faint hearted or the illiterate.

Game #5 - Beholder 2 - Progress Update

 

 

This is somewhat different from what I was expecting..It's still a 2-5D sidescroller, and it still has the look that characterizes Beholder, the gameplay feels quite different.

 

In the first game you'd be a building manager, that had to spy on tennants, search their apartments, potentially denounce them for illegal activities. and help them with their quests. All of this would lead to you getting money to pay your bills and sustain your family. All of this was on a timer that almost never stopped ticking down.

 

Beholder 2 has a different premise.You geta job offer to work for the government, which happens to be in the same building your father worked at who"fell" out of hte office window and died. So now you are presented with the quest of finding out what exactly happened, while also doing your duties for the government. What surprised me is that we end up playing a version of papers, please as our job. We attend people that want either request something, denounce someone, , complain about something or just ask for information. You'll have to categorize their demands properly and send them to the proper ministry and respective department culture, patriotism,, order, etc.).

 

THen the game opens up more and more, as you get objectives, like get a promoton by eliminating your colleagues some way or another. There are quests to complete to get extra money (again you'll have bills to pay) Like in the first game you get moral choices, that influence how the overall game may go. This time however your ctime constraint is different. You get 9 hours a day to do stuff. 2 hours takes a work shift, so you can do 4 shifts a day tops. Speaking to the boss will take an hour, searching things takes 1 5-15 minutes, evesdropping takes 10 minutes and the there's also stuff you can do outside of the office. Watching TV takes an hour, reading a book that gives you perks takes 2-6 hours, visiting someone in the apartment takes an hour and lastly visiting another location takes 3 hours. Visiting locations is done iin a text adventure kind of way.

 

That's it so far. I'll put more hours into it, and maybe there's even more stuff to do in this game by the final day.

Game #7 Initial Review

 

Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky

Exist Archive is a side scrolling RPG that looks absolutely stunning. The areas I’ve explored so far have been very vibrant, you almost wouldn’t realize it’s a side scroller. Character models in game are chibi-esque. Some cut scenes are animated, with smaller scenes fully voice acted (you can choose between English or Japanese). I’ve only spent a couple hours with it & I don’t think I’ll get tired of looking at it.

 

Story-wise: As with Bad Apple Wars, the main character, Kanata, dies in an accident right at the start. It looked like a sink hole opened up & dropped Kanata & another friend he was with at the time into the subway. Where they were crushed by debris before anyone could reach them. The other part of their group of friends was at the scene, but not caught up in the accident.

 

Kanata wakes up later on a different planet made up of floating islands swirled in a sphere like pattern. He takes a very clinical approach to the situation as he ponders the possibility of this being the afterlife. Eventually he encounters another person in this strange land, Mayura, a fellow high school aged girl. Except unlike him, she has no memories from before. The pair decide to explore around for food & a way out. A disembodied voice (that appears to be coming from Kanata’s hand) occasionally comments on their progress & leads them to two of his friends. Turns out that voice is some kind of inhabitant to this world. An immortal being that grants the group of kids new powers to fight off monsters. They take the shape of typical RPG classes; fencer, magic user, gunner and fists. I’m probably not making the plot sound very interesting, but it’s been shown in small little tidbits with no real end game direction as of yet.

 

A few inconveniences to note; loading times between battle modes & when opening the menu. The battles are turned base with an attacking & guarding phase. Taking actions though feel out of sync, making it hard to earn combos. & then there’s a prolonged delay when opening the menu. The game pauses like you just tried to open 20 tabs & then slowly catches back up. It’s really strange & makes me think the game is going to freeze. From what I’ve been reading in the menu, there’s things I haven’t even gotten to yet like different skill sets. I’m interested to keep progressing through the game but feel like it’ll be slow going. Already 2hrs in with multiple quests done & I haven’t even been introduced to skills. Guess it’s an UR plat for a reason.

Yes it is a UR plat for a reason.  It's grindy, the mechanics aren't well explained and the info on the game is sparse.  I know I posted some good info on the forums while I was working on it.  I don't think the game ever really introduces skills beyond what it gives when new characters join.  You can increase them via the menu though.  First things you want to go for is the training ability and get Mayura's class up so she can spam heals every turn.  Otherwise focus on each character maxing out their class first, then any unique skills they get.  You'll be doing a lot of grinding, but I admit I really enjoyed the game and missed playing it once I got the plat.

 

Are you playing the game on Vita or PS4, btw?  I got the plat just fine on Vita, but there are some known issues you'll want to be aware of if you are playing that version that don't apply to the PS4 version.  It won't affect you until later in the game but definitely made getting the speedrun times a bit trickier because the main tactic that is used will freeze the Vita version.
