Popular Post Undead Wolf
Quote Note: This thread was made to compile a list of games affected by censorship. Contributing to this list by providing information, such as including links to relevant articles/videos, screenshot comparisons, developer statements, etc, are encouraged. Of course, discussion about the specific examples mentioned in this thread are welcome too, but please refrain from discussing the broader issue of censorship because we already have a separate thread for that which you can find HERE. I ask that you keep things civil and on topic to prevent mod intervention. Thank you. What is the purpose of this thread? If you're anything like me, I want to know if a game has been censored in some way before I buy it so I can make an informed purchasing decision about whether or not it's a product worth supporting. I think this is especially important in this new era of ESG compliance where censorship is so prevalent and cheered on by certain groups. Sony themselves (who's PlayStation HQ is now located in California) implemented a censorship policy back in 2018 in response to the "#MeToo movement" in the US. While it initially seemed to target Japanese games exclusively (especially those with anime art styles) because of what they deemed to be "sexist" character designs, as we've seen over the years, it has affected western developers too for other reasons. It's not just sexual content Sony has a problem with; we've seen gore getting censored in horror games and even games getting removed from the store because Sony deemed the content "racist". This policy isn't applied consistently though, and as we've seen, some of the more high profile developers will get a pass, even from Sony's own first party studios. This policy is mostly used by the woke staff at PlayStation to bully smaller devs and publishers, especially those from Japan, to comply with their warped view of the world where anime girls with big boobs are offensive and adult themes are triggering. Sony doesn't think you're mature enough to come to your own conclusions regarding what you're comfortable with, so they tone it down for you. I've created this thread in order to compile a list of these censored games with information on how they've been changed, be it for political reasons, complaints on social media, demands made by the platform holder, etc. And let's not forget about those localizers who go out of their way to disrespect the source material as much as possible by making it "more palatable to western audiences". When possible, I will include alternate ways of buying/playing versions of these games that haven't been affected by censorship. I'll do my best to keep the thread updated, but I'll also be counting on you guys to help me since some things will undoubtedly slip under my radar. The idea is that you'll be able to look through this opening post to find both older games and upcoming ones to see if and how it has been affected. I've roughly put them in order of release, but if you're on PC and don't want to look through the entire post, you can use CTRL + F to bring up a search box and type the name of the game you're looking for to see if it has been mentioned. Will all examples of censorship be included on this list? Ideally it would, but video game censorship is very common in places like the Middle East, China, etc, and it's practically impossible for me to know about every example that happens across the globe. I will add examples that are brought to my attention, but I want this thread to primarily focus on the information that will be relevant to the mostly western English-speaking visitors of this site. Also, there might be times where something is brought to my attention either via this thread or through PM's and it's not entirely clear if it's actually censorship. When this happens, I will make a decision about whether or not to put it on the list at the time, but I will give others the opportunity to voice their opinions on the matter if they happen to be more knowledgeable than me on the subject. Why not include other consoles/handhelds in this list? First and foremost, I wanted to create a thread that would be relevant to the people who visit this site. While it would be interesting to list historical examples of censorship in games or the censorship that goes on elsewhere, it wouldn't really help in the purpose I stated above of informing people before they make a purchase. Secondly, the PS5, PS4, and Vita are all platforms that have been affected by Sony's Censorship Policy which was introduced back in 2018. That censorship policy was the impetus behind creating this thread, and thus, the focus should be on Sony platforms. I have to draw the line somewhere. How do I contribute to this list? It's simple really. Just put the name of the game in your post along with some form of proof. Assuming the developers haven't made a statement regarding the censorship themselves, other examples of proof would be something like an article/forum post/YouTube video that details the censorship in question (screenshot comparisons, translation differences, etc). So long as what you've posted will be able to inform somebody not familiar with the game about the changes, that will be fine. The more information you can provide the better. Do note that since we're now years removed from the censorship policy being implemented, Japanese developers have had time to adjust, and many of their games are now being censored during development. Most of the time we'll never know what could have been in the game unless the developers come outright and say it. Just because a game isn't on this list doesn't mean it wasn't affected by Sony's censorship policy, it's just hard to prove one way or another. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2013 The Walking Dead Season 1 (PS4/Vita) - Toned down gore Source: Censored Gaming Region: JP Uncensored Alternative: NA, EU The Walking Dead Season 2 (PS4/Vita) - Toned down gore Source: Censored Gaming Region: JP Uncensored Alternative: NA, EU 2014 Don't Starve (PS4, Vita) - The character Warbucks, who was based off a stereotypical 19th to early 20th century British explorer, was removed from the game for being "culturally problematic". Popular Post Undead Wolf
I've been working on this for many hours at this point, so I'm going to stop for now and continue with the rest of it tomorrow. I got up to the end of 2018, so if you see anything you think should be on the list from before then, feel free to post about it. Same goes for any mistakes I may have made.

Popular Post thefourfoldroot
You’ll see a massive increase in censorship for the last year. Sony’s new puritanical global censorship drive is the only thing making me think twice about ps5. If Switch would only get trophies I’d be so happy as I could then get the uncensored versions of games.

YROSHIKU
I wonder if those censoring assholes gonna find something "innappriopiate" or "suggestive" in upcoming Sakura Wars. Plus I think we can add to the list Granblue Fantasy Versus as well since they had to alter costumes for two characters because they were "too revealing".
Popular Post Golem25
TC, you are doing God's work. Much love, Senpai. As you said, the Yakuza 3 Remaster, released in 2019 in the West, had a 'transphobic' sidequest cut because it's 2019 and we can't have fun things anymore; https://www.thegamer.com/yakuza-3-remastered-transphobic-sidequest-removed/ It's still in the good old original Yakuza 3 for PS3, which released in 2010 (2009 in Japan), buuuuuuuuuut..... https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps3/950186-yakuza-3/answers/173293-what-was-cut-out-of-the-american-release The original Yakuza 3 had a lot of other stuff removed (ironically not the 'offensive' character that was cut out of the remaster) because hostess clubs and massage minigames would supposedly not gel well with Western audiences. If you censor games or purposefully change the localization to exclude things you personally find distasteful, you should not be working in video games or any kind of entertainment industry. It's bizarre that no one batted an eye at the character in 2010, but less than a decade later we definitely can't have it in the game no more. Oh your comment reminds me that Street Fighter V was censored, checked the list for it and while it's there it doesn't mention that Yuri's costume was changed to add an ugly black skin tight suit under her zipper skin tight suit that doesn't fit her... which is the dumbest costume design decision ever made somehow worse. But at least the tits out version makes sense in that it delivers fanservice and it fits the character's personality. The censored one is just stupid and obvious. The level of laziness is astonishing with the censorship. At least redo the costume so it's zipped up. Nobody would wear two skin tight suits... she was tits out in the first story 2D image [too lazy to find a non thumbnail version of it] of her in the game, and the type of low cut costume is similar to alt2 in SFIV. the laziness and lack of artistic integrity is what irks me more than anything. Like when Capcom just shoved some god rays pouring out of what's her face's butthole in DMC5. At least redo the scene with a different camera angle you lazy twats. Make it look good at least and demand Sony pay you for it. Put in the effort if you're going to censor your art. It's really annoying coming from people who created the original doing it to their own stuff, I could understand that level of apathy in ruining art... like a Saban level bullshit on the Digimon anime. They didn't have anything to do with Digimon's creation. But Capcom made these games and still made these lazy decisions to make their games look stupid. The devs included a sneaky workaround for that one : Here's some other info I have been saving up since the other thread hadn't been updated for a while: The new Steins Gate has been heavily edited in the West : The PS4 versions of Doom 1 and 2 have just been censored: Borderlands 3' Moxxi DLC was just banned in Saudi Arabia: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EMKqLsnXsAAEik4.jpg:large SoulCalibur 6 has just been censored : Song of Memories was banned in Australia: https://www.refused-classification.com/censorship/games/s.html#song-of-memories I don't know if you want to include this but Helldivers received some minor censorship for its Chinese release: I don't know if there were any gameplay changes though. Undead Wolf
Okay, everything I thought was relevant from the original thread has now been brought over. I've also added various things mentioned both here and on the last page of the old thread which weren't added to the OP. So the stuff @Jigsy1 and @fenrir54565 posted about Yakuza 4, LoveR Kiss, Disgaea 4 Complete+, and Commandos 2 HD Remaster are now on the list. Undead Wolf
I added a "Recent Changes" section to the opening post just so it's easier to tell what I'm putting on there. I was told in a PM about the censorship of Terminator: Resistance, so that has been added to the list too. @HuntingFever Could you be more specific about what has been censored in DOOM 1 & 2 for PS4? From what I could gather, the update actually restored some things that were missing in the Wolfenstein easter egg level, but I guess not all of it? Also, that link regarding the Borderlands 3 DLC being banned doesn't work. Also, that link regarding the Borderlands 3 DLC being banned doesn't work. Crap, the owner of that tweet must have deleted it but I'll go digging and see if I can find another source, though if I remember right, the DLC was banned because of the emphasis on gambling (plus some extremely raunchy jokes which the Saudi censors had a fit over), which is frowned upon and outright banned in many Islamic countries. As for Doom, I'll go digging again and try to find more info . EDIT 1: Here's a new source for the BL3 DLC ban: EDIT 2: DOA 6's latest batch of DLC was censored: https://www.oneangrygamer.net/2020/02/dead-or-alive-6-removes-phase-4s-sexy-arnice-demon-transformation/103772/ EDIT 3: From what I can gather about the Doom 2 Wolfenstein Easter Egg censorship, is that some References (presumably relating to the Nazis) are still missing but I'm having a hard time nailing down specifics so it may be wise to put that one on the research pile for possible future inclusion. EDIT: I can confirm that the Medievil remake was censored but I'm not sure of the reason - credit to TachikomaShiki for this info: Quote It seems the MediEvil Remake on PlayStation 4 has had the original PlayStation 1 dialog carried over but one of the Hall of Heroes characters has had their dialog altered/censored for some strange reason. No idea if this was the developers or a Sony decision but not many people seem to have picked up on it so far.
