The skins are useless and the default skin is better in my opinion. And when you got a second player or rarely all 4 players you get a message that all players left in a middle of the first cutscene. When I was paltting it, I have seen alot of people playing, and I've met some who didn't care for trophies, which means, yes, they were playing 4fun. I never cared what character I was playing. Ratchet is my best, but only because I beat the game in offline mode playing with him. But while playing online I always played others. Mostly for the reason you specified =).
