COVID-19 Megathread

When you wash your hands (and you better be washing your hands, with actual soap), hum the song "Happy Birthday" to yourself twice. That's the minimum length of time you're supposed to be washing them. 20 seconds is a lot longer than you think it is. MMO players will know what I'm talking about.

I just wanted to emphasize the importance of not panicking.

Panicking won't solve anything. Panic breeds misinformation & chaos. Know the facts before you take any action.

We'll get through this. Just do what is being recommended. Like @damon8r351 stated above, wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds (hand sanitizer is tolerable but soap and warm water work better!). It's also recommended to try and restrain from touching your face with your hands, & distance yourself from anybody who has/is suspected of having COVID-19. This automatically includes people who has traveled recently. These people should automatically be self-isolating themselves ASAP (even if they have no symptoms!).

As for the severity of the disease, from the statistics I've seen, the survival rate is above 95%. HOWEVER, this virus, as you would expect, is very much deadly to the immunocomprimised (like cancer patients!), the elderly, & the very young. The more people that get the virus, the more people from these groups are put at risk of getting the virus.

I understand that everyone is stressed. I, like many others, have been affected by this pandemic. If anybody has any questions and/or just wants someone to talk to through this stressful time, just send me a PM or @ me on this thread. The links OP provided are great sources to getting informed but in case anybody wants clarification on anything, just let me know and I'll do my best.

From what I've learned today the most important thing to remember is that just because something isn't affecting you doesn't mean it isn't having a critical impact on other people. Being aware and conscious to the world around you, being considerate to follow the necessary steps to help prevent the spread and most importantly being open to helping others who may be affected by what's going on is very important. Other people may be in a panic but you can always be the strong rock that they can lean on for help in times of crisis. I just send strong thoughts to the men and women who are on the front lines fighting to figure out the full spectrum of this virus, what permanent effects is has and especially the people in the hospitals treating others right now. I know probably in some places people might be working over time due to the influx of patients in care of medical professionals which can be stressful.

If we all work together to stop this before it even starts, so to speak, less people will have to suffer at the hands of this thing and potentially die of it. :)

Honestly I'm pretty surprised at how quick things are flying off the shelf in stores right now, even in a smaller town like mine. I've been to 3 different stores recently, & things like bread, flour, ramen, TP, medical supplies, etc... have either very few left, or are completely sold out. I do believe in being careful & stocking up on a few things, but some people can go overboard with it... hoarders like that are actually why so many others are rushing to the store & trying to get what that can, it's like a chain reaction. :hmm:

My country is heading towards complete lock down I believe. Me and my mom are being quarantined at the moment.

The last time I've been outside was when I went to watch the Sonic movie with my friend  back in early Feb and it was a risk by itself but I couldn't miss it.

I really hope as the summer approaches things will settle down at least one bit. This cannot continue.

I'm thankful that I have so many games I can play  and an active Netflix account otherwise I would've lost my sanity.

In my country (Argentina) there is a quarantine for 14 days. However, the people still think this is a mini-vacation so they are going out to turistic places with their families - not so smart i think.

Schools and universities are closed until 31th march, transports are less frequent and hospitals are full with paranoid people.

I definitely feel badly for retail workers at the moment, I'm sure a lot get treated horribly by customers at the best of times so I can only imagine this has exacerbated that.  A lot of stores here are closing earlier to allow them to sanitize and restock, I believe from what I read that Walmart 24/7 locations will only be open now from 6am to 11pm.  I've seen a few stores too that are dedicating their first hour of opening to Senior Citizens.

Here in Australia supermarkets basics gone empty due to all the people panicking, so they have had to put a time of day just for elderly to shop, closing early so can restock and limits of how much you can buy. I imagine all schools will eventually shut here too, unlike most the world we still have some sport on for now.

What is everyone’s opinion on if you are told to self isolate because you have it and don’t ? Should you be heavily fined, which is what I think should happen, since we have had a couple people on Australia do that.

I’d just love for this all to be over, 2020 not being a fun year so,far ?

That's what I heard as well, & I never thought I'd hear the day Walmart would close early (mine is 24/7), they didn't even close when they remodeled/organized the whole store where I live. ?

Around here, the stores are still (mostly) stocked. They have canceled most schools until early April and are closing down the theaters, bars, libraries and clubs. Restaurants are only allowing to go orders. This will probably be a big plus for DoorDash and the like. We have plenty of food and stuff. I still don't get why people are hoarding toilet paper. :dunno: Life is still mostly normal for me otherwise. I don't really go out very much. Been spending a lot more time with my pets. Getting Animal Crossing this weekend. That'll be a nice escape for a bit. Though I know it's serious, I do feel the media is not helping matters.

One positive about this is I'll be able to tackle my backlog more.

The most important thing as someone said here is not panicking, because even though we have to take this sereously there is no reason to panick, first than all because the infection by COVID19 can be avoided easily by taking all precautions, and secondly, because the rate of mortality of those infected is actually low.

There are people making fun out of the situation by trying to scare people telling them lies like: we're living a zombie apocalipse, and many of us might think that this is horrible just because we haven't lived that much to even have a notion of what "horrible" actually is. You were only asked to stay home and see how the situation evolves, China apparently overcame the crisis of COVID-19, so did South Korea, where the rate of infection has been flattening as well: https://www.visualcapitalist.com/infection-trajectory-flattening-the-covid19-curve/?fbclid=IwAR2zZOhbfXKssKXVyeOu29f9hZBN7-ZnUKz2CQ3ncAD1n41WM9SqgMRQMvg

In Europe on the other side things doesn't seem to march that well, but specialist are taking all necessary measures. For example, now that the situation in China is much better, they are actually starting to help the rest of the world who is facing this. For example, China sent a plain full of experts in the topic and supplies to Italy a few days a go, where the virus where the situations is at its worst in the planet.

In Southamerica, cases are still increasing, for example, here in Colombia the incoming of extrangers has been forbidden, presential lessons at any educative institution have been suspended and only done via internet, and many other even have been cancelled. Many other countries with no cases "like el Salvador" are also taking measures.

I don't wan't to say, this is nothing we should worry about, of course it concerns all of us, but again, no panic, perhaps it will continue to spread for some weeks, but there is no apocalypse, and humanity will not end because of this. The worst thing that might happen, is that you will probably have to cancell many of your plans for this summer due to quarantine, but take avantage of the situation and do what you like the most at home.

The Wal-Mart here in my town, the long aisle where the toilet paper is...is now completely bare. Hand sanitizer? All gone. All sold out. People losing their minds. Heard someone somewhere stabbed someone else over the last pack of bottled water. Stabbed someone over bottled water! Chaos.

But this is one thing atop a whole heap of other things that have been stressing out Americans for almost 20 years now. America hasn't been the same since September 11th, 2001. Has anyone else noticed things have just been getting worse and worse with each passing year after 9/11? Before coronavirus, it was World War 3 being an instant away from happening, the president up for impeachment for selling out our country, all the public mass shootings,  whooping cough, west nile virus, anthrax in your mail, creepy clown sightings, everyone telling you that our earth is dying, and so on and so forth. My point is, is that it hasn't stopped. The bullshit just keeps coming. At some point, we've all stopped and thought to ourselves, "What's going on?" What is going on? Such a simple question, but such a lengthy and complex answer that no one can quite put their finger on.

At some point, it all becomes too much to bear. We need peace. We don't need corrupt leaders making empty promises, we don't need to feel like we could get nuked by a foreign country every other week. We don't need to feel unsafe about going into public and possibly contracting some new biblical plague every damn day. This constant state of fear and feeling unsafe has got us all on edge, all the time, every single day. Some of us can take it. Some of us think we can take it, but end up snapping and...well you know. WE NEED PEACE, AND SERENITY, NOW. Because things have in fact been getting worse and worse for years now, and we need to put a stop to it. But...easier said than done.

I see this as a good opportunity to avoid people, play games and drink without it being “anti social” lol.

I hope stores honor pre orders even if they are collected a month late..

Mine is getting shipped to me and you can always get it digital.

Something I found rather comical yesterday when I went grocery shopping:

When I said that either my local store seemed to have their shit together, or people in my town are less retarded than the norm with regards to stockpiling food, that statement didn't quite accurately communicate the reality of the situation. The shelves weren't bare, but but it was obvious people were stocking up more than usual and the store was barely keeping up. Things that I noticed were low: meat, uncanned vegetables and fruit, milk, bread, eggs, frozen foods. There was not a single bottle of hand sanitizer or hand soap to be had anywhere in the store.

The comical part was while my wife was at the butcher counter having them filet a salmon for us. She told me to check the milk case and grab a gallon since it was nearby. I check the case and not a single container of normal priced, every day milk was to be found in any size. By normal milk, I mean like the regular whole, 2%, 1%, skim milk you buy every time you're at the store without thinking about it. The milk isn't special in any way, it's just milk. Not a single container to be had anywhere. Oh, you could have your pick of the organic milk, plenty of that. Or almond milk, or soymilk. Or that weird crap people who are lactose intolerant can drink. We also have this local dairy north of Bellingham who bottles their milk in glass containers, when you're done with the bottle you clean it out and return it to the store to get a $2 deposit back. All of these choices cost more or "taste weird". I bought a bottle of the local dairy's milk because *makes masturbatory gesture*.

Why this was funny to me was the bizarre juxtaposition of people buying more than they usually need to prepare for a possible DoOmSdAy ScEnArIo, but at the same time too cheap and/or lazy to buy some of the "weird" milk. I can just imagine people had walked up to that case throughout day, said, "2 dollar deposit and I have to wash the bottle? Fuck that," and are sitting at home pissed off right now without normal everyday milk.
