I think i take my library for granted really, but if i put myself in the shoes of someone who had just bought a PS4 to help get me through this isolation or I didn't have much money for games right now, these two titles would be a very very welcome diversion.

I think maybe this is what's happening. Some of us tend to forget NOT everyone has acces to the same stuff we have.

It looks like this is aimed at newer players or more casual players than most of us.  There's got to be more people playing PS4 than there was a couple months ago due to what's happening in the world.  There's people getting into gaming that didn't really do much or any of it before.

So, for those people this is really awesome.  Maybe a few will stick around long-term and even get interested in collecting trophies.

Sure, offering these games does nothing for me personally, since I've already played these, have the Uncharted disc and Journey on PS+, but it's not always about me you know.

Fine, it's a low effort thing, but since the audience is fanboys who, while most of them have those games already,   gush at Sony's generosity, so the effort matches the desired result. Making online temporarily free would have been the better choice, you know, socialising in this period and all that, but I'm sure Sony is having troubles themselves with this virus, so I won't be too harsh on them.

Yeah, I was talking to some people on discord about this, and although it's a nice gesture, it doesn't really do anything for someone who has been paying for your service (i.e. PS+ subscribers) since Uncharted collection was free a couple of months ago and journey was free a while back.

I'm not trying to come across as self-entitled, I just thought the choices here were odd to say the least. Especially, Uncharted since it was given out this year. Though, that makes me wonder and maybe we should all be wondering... Perhaps Sony has seen a drastic increase in subs since the start of the COVID19 lockdown? Makes a little more sense if that's the case...

I have a feeling this is for those people who have just gotten a ps4 because of the self isolation and have a very minimal gaming library if any.

In that case, these are good choices to support their decision in buying a console and might help develop a new love for gaming without them needing to pay for an online experience (hence the self part these games only really ask for). Though of course Journey is best played with the online component.

I have Uncharted physically on PS3, physically on PS4 and through Plus and I also have Journey physically and through Plus. I haven't played through practically any of them and I still think this is a great gesture. That I'm not the one to benefit doesn't bother me at all.

I sent a message to four of the people I know in real life that have PS4s and they all thought it was awesome and none have either of the games, two even have Plus but almost never download any of the games.

I think this is a weird selection of games, not because of the PS+ nature of them, but because they're both single-player experiences. Yes, I know Journey supports multiplayer-ish formats, but break them down:

- Uncharted is one of the big platform-exclusive franchises, and is mostly known for the voice acting/story/performances. It's always been sold and marketed as a "cinematic" experience, which draws a direct comparison to movies. If that's the draw, you play through the experience once, and then what? The remasters don't even have multiplayer.

- Journey is a similarly cinematic experience; it's about touring the world, maybe with another person but totally possible without, and enjoying the art style and music. Once you've made your journey and seen the world, are you likely to do it again?

So Sony is encouraging people to stay at home and play games that they will most likely play once and then never again. Is this a rights issue, where all the games that have replay-ability, Sony isn't allowed to just make free?

Edit:

This seems like the most likely explanation, actually.

I have both these games and uncharted was on plus recently however journey wasn't.  Journey was on plus years ago before many people probably got a ps4.

People probably brought a ps4 because of what's happening right now and these are great games to give for completely free. Also why are we complaining about free stuff? Unlike plus these are literally free with no monthly fee at all, why are people still complaining.

Surprising so many entitled posts on here.

They're giving away free stuff. It's free, what's there to complain?

It makes sense to give away these games as they are both flagship playstation titles and have been critically acclaimed.

If you bought the game under ps+ you can't change it anymore. So millions of people who pay for ps+ and got Nathan Drake just recently (3 months ago) cannot get the game again or anymore. And besides Nathan is probably among the best selling ps4 games anyway. Sony has some other first party titles they could have chosen. Or let the people choose. Give us a list of some games maybe 3 and we'll decide what we want to play. That would be great...

@PhyrxianLibrarin i agree to you. While Uncharted 1-3 take several hours to complete each and you may play again on another difficulty, Journey offers a great experience but it just lasts for maybe 2 hours and not much to go again except if you play it once on your own and then another time with a partner online maybe?

This is low effort/cheapest of the cheap for Sony. During this period of time (pandemic). Sale offers have been underwhelming, scarce and pathetic. Now they come up with this sad excuse of an initiative without anything substantial for their loyal PS+members, great job!

Your talking like journey was on plus this year, it was on plus in 2016. Theres been so many ps4 console sales since it went off plus.

I agree with uncharted though, that was on plus maybe too recently.

¿2 free games in exchange of doing nothing but staying at home? ¿And yet, you people, complain about both selections? Damn. You are like the central american people entering Mexico while trying to get to the U.S. They get here without clothing, home or food, yet, they complain about the free food given to them and throw it to the trash can. Like spoiled brats.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, I'm just trying to figure out why the games they chose don't match their message. It would be like Amazon saying "to encourage people to stay inside for the next month, everyone can rent one (1) movie for free". OK that's great, thanks for the free movie tonight, but what about the other 29 nights this month?

Like you know what would have been a great choice for people who are picking up video games because they can't go outside? The Jackbox party packs, or Until Dawn, or A Way Out, or Rocket League, or Overcooked, or any of the dozens of games that you can play over and over again.

People would have complained about rocket league and overcooked because they were plus too.

I think stuff like fallout 4, minecraft and skyrim would have been good picks. They are games you can play for days and still have things to do.

Witcher 3 too potentially but I havent actually played it despite owning it..

Yeah, exactly. That's why I'm wondering if Sony even has the rights to make those free, or do they need Bethesda/Mojang/CDPR/whoever's permission to do so.

Great initiative. I can look past the fact that I’ve paid for PS Plus and have received one of these games through my subscription already. It’s nice to see Sony giving away something, regardless of how tired the Nathan Drake Collection may be for most people. Someone out there who has lost their job and cannot immediately find another, will be pleased to escape from reality for a short while.

Also, am I to assume there will be other titles to follow?

That's something I never considered , I guess they could have made gran turismo sport and its online service free I guess.(I think sony owns gran turismo)

Bethesda could have easily profited though if they had made fallout 76 free but make people buy the brand new dlc. (Or eso ,same business concept)

I'm honestly doubtful they will do more but I've been pleasantly surprised before.
