Ad blockers in General

I liked ads, but sometimes there is a line to whatever ads are being put, because some actually do cross the line.

I used ad blockers for a number of reasons: avoiding malware, questionable ads beyond my line, and pop-ups that lead to somewhere malicious. Why this is mostly frowned upon by websites? I know they prevent ad blockers, so it's a way to stop people from shattering their ad revenue, because ads = money. Anyway, that's not the point. I don't have a problem with ads. However, I do have a problem with ads that contain malicious content, redirection to some malware, and pretty much questionable content in general. Kissanime is a good example for this. When you enter their website with an ad-blocker on, they'll pretty much tell you to whitelist their website from ad-blocker. It's obtrusive. You can't even watch anime without suffering from the bane of so many pop-ups and ads. It's mental. The question is, do you use ad-blockers a lot?

I recently installed an ad blocker for one specific website because it loads so much adcrap in such a lazy way that Firefox slows to a crawl. It basically blocks my whole laptop after a while and I find it amazing that the site can get away with it. I am also amazed that too much Javascript and other resources on a single page can do that to my laptop in the first place, but that's a different discussion.

Anyway, that's the first time I have used an ad blocker in over 20 years of being on the internet. In that time I have only ever accidentally clicked an ad though, so they will not lose a lot of money from me personally.

At first I didn't mind ads as i know that's how people who make content get paid, but what made me use adblock was this one time watching youtube and there was this show on a channel in my country that was aggressively pushed, it was like a 1:30 min in length, but you could not skip it and it played for every video and any time you refreshed it replayed it again.

I got so dam fed up, it was a show i wouldn't have mind watching, a local feel good show about helping vulnerable people, but the fact you had to sit through it again and again just made me boil. It was at a time i was trying to find a guide for some collectibles in a game but I had to endure it until i couldn't and went searching for an ad blocker. Now i just block everything, don't care what it is.

I have contemplated in not using it, but have noticed some sites just aggressively push ads that cover the dam screen or open up, or automatically play with sound and I cant be bothered with that. Show your ads and if im interested i may click it, but if you gonna push in front of me i'm not down for that

I do use ad blocker. If any site tells me to turn it off to view their site. Then they can fk off and be on my block list.

I try to avoid using ad blockers where possible, as they can interfere with site scripts and behaviour.

I tend to go for ad-free options where they are available, and otherwise I'll either put up with them or try to find an alternative website. An exception to the rule is YouTube, I've started to block their ads again because they were getting a bit overkill.. ?

I don't.

I'm more afraid the ad-blocker give virus than the ads themselves lol

I watch kissanime on mobile and I idk how to install an ad-blocker anyway

In these sites I'm already used to click on the spots to close the ads, so it doesn't bothers me. Since I'm watching it illegally, I can't complain of anything, I guess

Still better than free crunchyroll tbh, it has 3 ads within the anime 20 seconds each

I have no idea about the pc though

Edit: oh we are in the PC & Desktop section ?

Most of the site owners also have problems with these. They don't want that experience for their end users either.

Yes, it's how they pay the bills, since the content has to get paid for by someone.

You definitely shouldn't reward sites with such ad abuse with your visits. Using an ad blocker only for sites with such terrible ad abuse is one way, but your visits give them statistics that show their site is in demand, which bolsters their marketability and encourages to continue doing it. The best option would be not going.

Sponsorblock for all those Raid/Nord VPN etc. video sponsors
Adblock for sites that are absolutely malicious with ad space, namely one trophy site.
Adnauseam to give them false clicks just to fuck with them.
Brave browser in general to hide ads where I don't want them and other custom options.

I'm old enough to remember how bad popups were back in the early days of the internet. It seriously used to be a minefield of them. You'd close one and two would appear. I remember afew times having to disconnect from the net just to stop them lol ah the late 90s was fun.

I don't need ad blocker on PSNProfiles, but it's very useful when I'm trying to choose a porn video ? Those ads really kill the mood :o

I wish there were some Ad blockers on mobile. I mean, I like to take a bath while listening to music and I normally use YouTube for that. Although now and then, an add starts and it's a 5 minutes video of something random - like the last one, a video showing someone making a Ballon with paper. So I just listened to the first song.

Ad blocker is one of the best programs ever. Ads are annoying...even more so on sites where you're reading an article and all of a sudden the screens dims and a giant ad pops on in the center, those are the ones that really trigger me. A lot of sites won't even let you browse it unless you disable it, which I never do so I'll go else where.

I've been using ad blockers for so long that I forget the internet even has ads until I use a device without one. When there's a site I use frequently or a content creator I watch regularly, I try to support more directly in the form of subscriptions or merch. I have to imagine PSNP has made orders of magnitude more from my premium purchase than it would have from ad impressions.

Like what was quoted in Metro 2033 "If it's hostile, you kill it."  In other words of my own, "block ads, no matter what". But thanks for the third advice, brother. Ads, even if it is for the cash-cow ad revenue, is only a terminal cancer level of headache to deal with, if not for the relentless pop-ups that seem to don't just stop, since my patience with them always run short. In other cases, it even crashed my browser for some unknown reason. They are literally pushing my berserk button for their obtrusiveness.

I use Opera's built-in privacy protection to block ads, tracking and malware. I go with EasyList and on top of that I use my own custom list to block tracking scripts / ads which get past EasyList.

I also have a habit of googling and visiting random sites on another browser (Firefox Developer Edition) to avoid having any unwanted cookies set on my main browser. The secondary browser is set to clear browser cache each time it's closed.

If you knew what kind of data is gathered about you with tracking and marketing automation services such as Hotjar, Marketo and Hubspot, you'd never browse without privacy protection again. Services like Hotjar and Google Analytics can also pose a risk for security of your credit card information. Hotjar has claimed in the past it doesn't record video of forms where credit card numbers or passwords are input anymore, but I wouldn't be so sure of that.

Firefox Preview comes with uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, HTTPS Everywhere, NoScript, and Dark Reader already installed. Just have to enable them in the settings. It's become my favorite mobile browser.

Also NewPipe is an open-source YouTube viewer. Won't find it on the play store though. It's the only way I watch Youtube now (for vids off my subscribed channels).

If you have a raspberry pi or a server, check out Pi-hole. Blocks nasties for all your devices.

So yes, I use them a lot. Ads have gotten out of hand.  I gladly support good content and whitelist sites I frequent that have bearable ads.

And I, for one, agree with you. Unfortunately, even if their money-hungry eyes tell me to "support" them, I pass. Bearable or not, I install ad-blockers in every single web browser, from PC to my phone, unless if they're idiotic to tell me to "whitelist" them. I'm all about patience and cleanliness whenever I browse, not the opposites of these two. That's why I never liked ads. These things attempted to crash my PC and my browsing once, leaving a breadcrumb trail of their mess. I had to deal with so many PUPs, malwares, adwares, and random ".exes" running rampant in my old laptop.

On PC I use ad blockers on websites where adverts are problematic, either there's too many of them (YouTube 2017 and beyond) or the ads a site displays contain mailware and shit (Know Your Meme is a website I visit on occasions for fun that has this issue. They introduced a whitelist pop-up about a year or two ago but there's a way to get rid of that too with a special uBlock Origin trick).

On my iPhone I use Safari as my browser with an ad block app installed to it. I have this active on all sites yet I still get pop-ups and other crap on PSNP (I'm looking at you War Thunder) along with other trophy websites.

Another reason I hated ads. Stopping people from blocking ads is not enough for them. They had to go through the dumbest ways imaginable to put a whitelist pop-up. Think they learned from their mistakes, but no. They aren't. Why they can't just fix their ads instead?

I have a mixed approach with ad blockers. For the most part, I use them everywhere I go since I just hate having to see ads everywhere. Especially useful on YouTube when you want to see a video without getting interrupted about things you don't care about every few minutes.

However, some sites I do whitelist from time to time, either because I want to read something from them or because I want to get (i.e. download) something from them. It really depends on my mood and how much ad-heavy the site itself is. I reckon ads are essential for these sites to survive as they need revenue and whatnot. That's perfectly understandable and respectable. However, there are some sites out there that go way out of hand with them, forcing you to sit through countless pop-ups or just seeing stuff you don't give a crap about. Those are the worst offenders and the ones that get ad-blocked at first sight. Either I ad-block-it or I don't visit the site.

Again, I go on a case-by-case basis with these. I personally like to have the option to decide whether I want to watch an ad or not, rather than being forcefully spoon-fed with them when I don't want to.

I am using uBlock Origins and Privacy Badger in Firefox.

There are ads on KissAnime??  ...I know there are, and that there are a lot. But I have none. Privacy Badger is just blocking everything uBlock cannot block and even the script that would temporarily IP ban you for using an adblocker. :P

Edit: The reason why I am blocking ads... I have a problem with holding attention. So when ads are moving, blinking, or are animated in any other way... I cannot focus on reading and... ughhh... Also, who invented ads with sounds? Or that weird window that flies in from one side? Or sometimes the whole free space of a website is suddenly T-Mobile purple. Or some female bots want to chat with me... Leave me alone! D:

Sure. Can you name something better than KissAnime? And do not come me with Crunchyroll. That thing sucks. Maybe they geoblock. I dunno. Maybe it is cool in the US, but it is not in Europe.

There are...?

Blokada for example. Download it from their website. Does not even need root.

But what exactly stops you from installing uBlock and Privacy Badger in your mobile Firefox?

Install the User-Agent Switcher extension and change your user agent to Google Bot. With that user agent you can even surpass paywalls...

Do not forget to change it back to default when you leave the site.
