Popular Post PhantomFear94
6 months down, 6 months to go. Generally speaking, 2020 has been a really weak year for video games in my opinion, even taking into account the on-going COVID-19 pandemic which by and large hasn’t affected what has been released, only contributing to minor delays. However, I’ve played 3 games this year I consider elite, and enough to put together a top 5. I thought it would be fun to start a thread where we consider our top contenders for GOTY at the half-way point. What are yours? Note 1: I personally don’t include remakes (i.e. Shadow of the Colossus) or remasters (i.e. Saints Row: The Third Remasters) in my lists, as the original content is much older and it’s not a true 2020 title. An exception to this was Resident Evil 2, which was so comprehensive and added unique elements, but nothing of the sort has released to my knowledge this year. Note 2: For me, the only games I can foresee knocking my #1 entry off the list are one of the following – Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost of Tsushima, Halo: Infinite & Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. I’m sure more games get announced between now and Christmas, but for now, that is it for me. ************************************ Honourable Mention – Animal Crossing: New Horizons ************************************ 5 – Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition Usually I wouldn’t include this game on the list that weren’t originally released in 2020, but given that its final part was released this year, that it has been completely impossible to play it on PS4/XB1 until now, and that it’s not at the top of my list anyway, I’m including it. I really liked this game, and it’s something truly unique and innovative. It was a breath of fresh air for me during a difficult time. It is a peculiar pacing and narrative flow, but something oddly therapeutic about the way it tells its story. I like it’s non-conformity to writing standards, its unforgiving demand for your complete undivided attention, and the unusual dealings of character centricity combined a unique supernatural/sci-fi twist. Not for everyone, but easily the best indie experience I’ve had to date. ************************************************** 4 – Dreams I had pretty low expectations for Dreams, but for what it is trying to do it does it very well. The games and experiences people have made are genuinely well-made, fan and unique, and I had a great time trying (and failing) to make things myself. It’s very community-centric, which is something I like, and is well-priced for the content you get. I do fear that its overall concept is a bit too optimistic, and that people will miss the true ‘game’ content of Media Molecule – I don’t think Dreams will be well-played for years to come. However, for the experience it is, Dreams was excellent and fully worth your time. ************************************************** 3 – DOOM Eternal DOOM Eternal seems to have disappointed some, but I personally think it is great, even if though I agree it isn’t as good as DOOM (2016). Whilst 2016 had a better story and world design, the gameplay of DOOM Eternal took the formula of the original to another level. The FPS gameplay is unrivalled (in my opinion) at this point in time amongst its shooter peers, and the variety of enemies (minus Marauders) and collectibles was really enjoyable. DOOM (2016) was my GOTY, whereas I think Eternal is a great but not outstanding. Nevertheless, it does exactly what it says on the tin. Highly recommend. ************************************************** 2 – Ori & the Will of the Wisps Apologies, as this is exclusive to XB1. However, it is close to a masterpiece. The first 1/3 – 1/4 of this game does a poor job at progressing you through the game and getting you to utilise the abilities on offer, but after 3 hours or so the game really opens up and become a masterclass in world design, artistic direction and air-tight platforming. I think the new platforming and combat elements work well, and the story really packs a punch even if it is a guiding light rather than the main attraction. Visually nothing compares to Ori, it’s such a beautiful game, and unlike many other games it gets better and better all the way to the ending rather than fizzling out towards the end. Originally I preferred Blind Forest, but this has grown and grown on me, even to the point of preferring it to DOOM Eternal, which has shocked me. ************************************************** 1 – The Last of Us: Part II This may be a controversial one for some, but thus far, it isn’t close for me. I can’t remember the last time a unanimously acclaimed game was so heavily divided amongst the community, although I completely get why, as the game is extremely daring and decisive. I’ve written about TLOU2 in quite some depth in a random opinion piece - https://forum.psnprofiles.com/topic/91176-the-price-of-vengenance-my-thoughts-of-the-narrative-of-tlou-part-ii-spoilers/ - (TONS OF SPOILERS IN THE LINK) – but I loved it. The game completely flips the binaries of good guys/bad guys in the most nuanced way imaginable, plays great, and is truly the bravest game I’ve ever played. TOAST13TOA5T
I'm kind of cheating a little bit here because its really the only qualifying game i have to participate with ? (I'm using this lockdown oddworld time to get all the online done from my backlog); Final Fantasy VII Remake. I haven't even finished it yet but its incredible and the only thing that disappoints me about it is that it won't last 100 hours. Everything i imagined it would be and more and to top it all if rekindled my love of RPGs that i had partially lost since PS1/PS2 days. The only 2 games i will be picking up for sure that will contend with it will be The Last of Us II, Trails of Cold Steel IV and Cyberpunk and out of those, the latter is higher on my list.
EIdain
The best game I've played this year came out in 2014, Transistor. But seeing as that doesn't count I'd probably have to give it to The Last of Us Part II, despite it's flaws it's the only real game that qualifies for me so far this year. I can definitely see it changing by the end of the year. It'd probably be Ori & The Will of The Wisps if I'd played it myself.

DefinitiveTJ
At the moment it's a toss up between Final Fantasy 7 remake and The Last of us Part 2. I think that I need a bit more time to process The Last of Us since it's so fresh on my mind. In terms of conversation both provided awesome discussions (apart from the trolls). I'm hoping that either ghost cyberpunk can top them but either way it's been an awesome game year so far.
BlackTorito
FF7 Remake, no doubt, but, there are quite some strong contenders to launch in the remaining 6 months, starting on July. I think Cyberpunk will be the last shot, and it is a very good looking one...
DizzyDavidson
The only game I played that came out this year is Two Point Hospital. That's my GOTY, but it would deserve that title even if I played other games. Now I just have to find some time to go back to the dlc.

Conor
Final Fantasy VII Remake was always going to be my GOTY unless they royally screwed it up, which they didn't. Seeing these characters brought to life in their proper form- not the crappy interpretatons brought forward by the expanded lore- and the way the world feels so alive made me remember why I loved the original so much. Wasn't sure how to feel about the ending at first but after taking some time to thin on it, I'm intrigued and excited for what will come next. The Last of Us Part II was, at its best, phenomenal though there are some pacing issues and some of the second-half characters could have done with some better development to make it as impactful as ND wanted it to be, but it's still an epic game with a great, challenging narrative. The notion that it "disrespects" fans of the original (which I most certainly am after playing and platting it on PS3 this year) is, to me at least, utterly ridiculous but I guess it's not up to me to tell other people how they should feel. Maybe not as good as the first game but I appreciate what it tried to do and feel it was much more successful at doing so than many others do. Ghost of Tsushima and Cyberpunk 2077 are probably gonna blow my mind too. The first half has been pretty so-so but I think this year will go down as a much better year than last year. Popular Post MarcusPunisher
Definitely Final Fantasy 7 Remake so far. A great game that re-imagines the original story and introduces fighting mechanics that are both fun and challenging at the same time. I had a lot of fun going through the hard mode and trying to get that platinum in the last chapter. I haven't played and Doom Eternal and I only heard good things about that so I need still need to play that one. Most disappointing is The Last of Us 2. Company's shady and abusive business aside, the gameplay is very generic in comparison to other titles. Not the worst with some minor changes, but still very generic. The graphics are still top notch and one of the best looking on the system, but the writing and story is on the level of 14 year edgelord trying to make a shallow story way deeper than it is. OG characters making confusing decisions that goes against how they were established before and introducing new characters that hardly anyone cares about. One of the worst game Naughty Dog has released in the past few years. The worst game of 2020 is easily Warcraft III Reforged. Everything that was promised was not presented in the game and it all boiled down to simple graphic upgrade. Even if you did not purchase the new version, you old account still downloaded the client to upgrade the older version and with that came the numerous bugs, removal of clans, custom maps, online features, and so on. There is no way to play the old game other than downloading it unofficially so everyone got screwed on this. Good job Blizzard.

Juzota
1. The Last of Us Part II 2. Doom Eternal 3. The Complex I guess those are only 3 games I've played that came out 2020. Games I'm looking forward to this year are F1 2020 and Cyberpunk 2077, maybe something else but I can't remember anything.

Fr_0zt
I have yet to buy a 2020 game. Was interested on FFVIIre but it's incomplete, so I rather wait for the full edition on 2030 (PS6). The game I really wanted was TLOUp2 but we all know how that turned out. Ghost of Tsushima seems like it'll be my first.... Hope it's good.
