Is this the first time since PS2 days an Atelier game has gotten a numbered sequel instead of changing the name in the title? Haven't played any of them on PS3 or 4 so is this important story wise or was Ryza just really well liked?

Yes, this is the first time since PS2 it's not a different main protagonist.

I'm not sure if Ryza was well-liked, but her thighs sure were very well-received.

Ryza is the best selling  Atelier game on the PS4, pretty much revived the brand.
