Popular Post Spacey_Dweeb
Current Update: We have started, but sign-ups are open for another couple of days. Hello everyone. As you might have guessed, you've been summoned to hunt monsters for a new Halloween event. I think you will really enjoy participating in the hunt. There is a big wall of text below. Don't be intimidated. The concept of the event is pretty simple. Each team of five hunters will be given the same list containing various types of monsters. The first team to finish their list will win $10 gift cards and have the event badges feature their logo. The text wall below gives a lot of details and establishes some rules in anticipation of issues, like what happens if you don't get a full team. However, I think this will be a fun and smooth event for all involved. I really want people to enjoy the event through working together towards common goals and rooting for each other and feeling supported as others take a keen interest in their gaming hobby. The more positive energy displayed the better! The gift cards should be looked at as a bonus incentive to finish first, but my hope is that the lot of us just have a great time together as we play games and enjoy the Halloween holiday season. This event will group you onto a team of five hunters. There are a total of 25 different monster bounties and your team will be tasked with eliminating each and every one of them. The average number of kills a party member will have is five. The work does not have to be split evenly. If you have a powerhouse hunter that wants to kill 21 monsters on their own, that is totally fine. The rest of the team would only need to kill an average one monster each to complete the event. However, the event winners will be the first team to successfully turn in all bounties. Your powerhouse hunter may not have the time to do all the work themselves. So it's smarter to divide things up more evenly. The organized team that coordinates well and accomplishes many bounties at once will have quite the edge. You can approach this in a number of different ways. Whether that be reserving one monster at a time, or assigning them to each other in groups, etc. It's up to you and your team, how the bounties get done. A slower player that is willing to work on rarer monsters will be a very valuable asset. So you are encouraged to join even if you normally skip out on other events. Your game choices are not limited by genre or anything like that. RPGs, Fantasy, and Horror games are fertile hunting grounds, but you can find monsters to defeat in the cutest and most innocent of games. How to Sign-Up: Please reply in this thread and let me know you want to participate in the event and indicate which team you would like to be on. Pick a team name from the list below. Most are pop culture groups that hunt monsters of various types. Unfortunately, you will not be allowed to rename your team and must pick from the list provided. I've already put in a bunch of work planning and sketching out logos etc. Those logos will show up on your bounty hunter score cards. I don't mean to be a jerk, but once the slots are gone, they are gone. There won't be additional teams created or extra hunters added to the teams. If a team is not full when the event starts, their required bounties will be adjusted down to maintain an average of five games per hunter. However, they will have their list of available bounties modified randomly and have to pick from a smaller list of monsters, it will be treated as if another team member had already completed those bounties. Slots are first come first served. If you don't have a preference or don't specify a team, I will roll a d10 and stick you in on whatever number comes up as a result of the roll. You can say something like "Anything but XXXX" and I will accommodate that request. Swapping after you are assigned to a team is not permitted. Please don't pressure people to force them off a team to make room for someone else or talk them into a trade. It won't be allowed. If you and your friends all want to be on the same team, you better coordinate this quickly. The Ghostbusters (Ghostbusters, obviously) Mystery Incorporated (Scooby Doo and friends) Team Free Will (A group in the TV show Supernatural fighting for the right for humans to have free will) The Black Cat Detectives (Detectives that have to investigate the weird/supernatural stuff that happens in Chicago in The Dresden Files) Clan Belmont (Family of vampire slayers in the Castlevania games) The Order of the Phoenix (Group to oppose an organization of dark wizards and other evil creatures in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter) Brothers Grimm (Collectors of folk stories and fairy tales. Some say they may be sourced from the fae themselves) The Holy Order of the Amyr (Knight-errant vigilantes from the Kingkiller Chronicles) The Claymores (Witch Hunters from an anime of the same name) Aes Sedai (Sorceresses from the Wheel of Time that generally are working to oppose the Dark One and prevent an apocalypse) Event Administration: I will be participating and tracking myself under the team name of the Van Helsing Alliance. If you wish to volunteer to help with the administration of the event, you can shoot me a direct message and possibly be allowed to join the Van Helsing Alliance. **EDIT 8/13 -This team is now full.** The decision would mostly be made on how active you are on the forums and if I can trust a fast response when votes are needed. Members of the Van Helsing Alliance will be able to vote on disputed bounties and other issues that arise during the event and may assist with updating tracking spreadsheets etc. The maximum number of hunters allowed into the alliance will also be five. My vote will count as 1.5. If the number of members is odd, majority rules. If there are an even number of members, my vote would break a tie. If you join the Van Helsing Alliance, you can participate in the event and have your progress tracked, but will be ineligible for the monetary prizes. If the Alliance wins, the event logo will be the Van Helsing Alliance on the badges, but the gift cards and other prizes will be given to non-administrative hunters. In this scenario, the Van Helsing Alliance members will come up with various categories to reward, like the most prolific hunter (most kills) or the most courageous hunter (highest percentage of kills in horror games) etc. and reward hunters outside of the alliance that best fit the chosen criteria. If a dispute involves a member of the Van Helsing Alliance's bounties, that particular member will not be allowed a vote. If the dispute involves me, personally, @gruffiiti would get the vote that counts as 1.5 while I sit it out, since he was first to volunteer for the alliance. If an alliance member is unresponsive, the decision will be finalized 24 hours after I requested the vote, as if the team member intentionally abstained from the vote. Which is another way the vote counting as 1.5 may come into play as a tie-breaker. What kind of monsters will I need to kill? In order to help avoid players staging games pre-event, I am keeping the full list under wraps for a little while. However, I think this is a fair question and of interest to any that may be applying. There will be some fairly obvious ones like: zombies, vampires, and werewolves. Two more unusual ones, that may require a little research, are Astrals and Cryptids. There is also a category that's kind of a catch-all. I am just calling it "abominations". If your monster doesn't fit anywhere, the abomination category is its home. Astrals would cover creatures from the Astral Planes, such as the Hiss from the game Control. It would also include celestial creatures, such as angels. You fight these in numerous RPGs, Persona 5 is an example that comes to mind immediately. There are also some celestial creatures in Bloodborne. Cryptids are a bit trickier; they are mostly creatures that are from urban legends. They are things people swear they have encountered in real life, but there's no firm proof of their existence. Big foot, Yetis. Mothman, the Chupacabra, the Loch Ness monster, etc. This is different than traditional mythological creatures such as mermaids or a unicorn. However, I decided to combine cryptids with native American and Inuit folklore creatures to help offer more choices. The only example that comes to mind for these is wendigos from Until Dawn, but I'm sure there are more games out there. As far as cryptids go, I know Mothman is in the Fallout series; yetis are in the Uncharted series, Big foot is in Red Dead Redemption series. The Jersey Devil is in The Wolf Among Us. When I provide the list, I'll put a few examples of monsters and games for each archetype like I did here. Some monsters will straddle the line and could possibly count for multiple categories. A lot of video game monsters are a mash-up of more traditional categories. Each game can only fill one bounty, but you can chose which category your monster is filling as long as it makes sense. If it doesn't make sense, other hunters can dispute it with a process outlined below in the game restrictions section. Many games like Skyrim and The Witcher can fill several bounty slots. Again, you can only count a game for a single bounty. However, multiple hunters on the same team can complete the same game and report it for different bounties, as long as it can fairly apply to each category it is being chosen for. You can even do different stacks of the same game like The Witcher 3 and The Witcher 3 Complete Edition or a NA and EU version. However, in the game restrictions section, it's noted only one EZPZ title per hunter. So stacking five of a Ratalaika game with a bunch of different monster types won't work. Disputes settled by the Van Helsing Alliance, as outlined in the same section. Also, once you've reported the category for the bounty, you can't adjust it later. This is just to keep it simple and respect the time of the people working to track your bounties. An obvious error can be corrected, of course. You may also move a disputed game to a more fitting category if that will help resolve the dispute peacefully as it will save time for the people tracking vs researching and voting etc. How to Register a Bounty Completion: You will receive the list of bounties about three days ahead of the start date. You can strategize with your team and have drafts, or do whatever you like to decide who kills what. Then you must platinum or 100% a game in which you must kill or defeat the specific type of monster in a fight. Again, you must kill or defeat that monster in the game. The monster can't just be present. For example, for a werewolf, The Order 1886 will work because you do battle with werewolves and kill them as part of the story. The Wolf Among Us does not work for werewolves. Even though Bigby is a basically a werewolf. Bigby is the main character of the story and it's required that he lives until the end. So even though it's possible to get Bigby killed, you play as him and he's not an antagonist, therefore, it does not meet the requirements for the event for the werewolf bounty. Once you've completed your game, post in the forum and let all the hunters know of your victory. Your bounty completion will be added to the tracker shortly after. If you want to count a monster in a game that only appears in a DLC, you must also finish that DLC to count it, otherwise you haven't actually faced the monster. If prior to the event you got the plat or 100%ed the base game, you can still count it in the event if you finish all DLC for the game and take it up to 100%. What if I thought I was killing a monster and it turns out there was a logical explanation and it wasn't a monster? This is totally fine and allowed in our hunt. It's more about the presentation. If you thought you were killing big foot and after it's downed you check it out and it is a guy in a gorilla suit, it still works. One prime example I can think of is Rise of the Tomb Raider. There is a section in a DLC where everything feels very supernatural. You are seeing demons, buildings walking around with chicken legs, etc. Then after you resolve the situation, you find it was a combination of showmanship and hallucinogenic plants. You can even go back through that area and see how parts of the illusion were pulled off. None of it was truly supernatural. But story-wise, you don't know that it isn't supernatural at the time. This works for me. Just like the old Scooby Doo episodes. Pretty much every monster was a man in a mask that would have gotten away with it, if it weren't for those meddling kids. It would also count if you kill a human possessed by a specific creature archetype and end the threat that way. The Hiss in Control work that way. I haven't played to through the game completely, so I don't know if you end up facing astral creatures directly. But I would count Control for the Astral category based on fighting possessed humans with supernatural abilities because of said possession. Just to reiterate you don't necessarily have to kill the monster. Just defeat it in a fight. Game Restrictions: Your completion choices will be accepted at face value on your honor as a hunter. If you think your game counts, then it does, you don't have to justify it or ask permission to play it. However, if another hunter can come up with a compelling argument that your kill should not count, they can dispute it. If a dispute is raised, the Van Helsing Alliance will take a vote on it. If the vote goes against the person playing the game, they can provide a rebuttal, then the alliance will review it again. The second vote will be the final disposition. Valid reasons to dispute a game are outlined below, but may not be all inclusive. The rules are just aimed at being fair to all. I ask that before you dispute, consider giving the other hunter the benefit of the doubt and only dispute if something seems really fishy. You can't stage games ahead of the event. Games that are already started are permitted. However, staged games are not. I ask that you refrain from working on games that you plan to count for this event during the month of August. The list of monsters is not being provided ahead of time to help limit this potential problem. I don't plan to analyze every trophy, but if another hunter disputes whether your bounty should count, staged games will be met with a skeptic's eye. If significant progress was made during August, the completion may be deemed the unfair and you would not be able to be count the game for a bounty in the event. If you just so happen to have a game that's almost done but you abandoned before August, you just got lucky and now is a great time to complete it. If you have a game that you have started but had to put in a bunch of hours to finish, during the event time frame, it should be ok. This is mostly here to keep things exciting and not have to give out the prize 5 hours after the event starts. It's the same reason I'm not allowing all EZPZ plats like described below. Your choices need to make sense for your bounty. As mentioned before, there won't be much scrutiny when it comes to how you apply your bounties. but people can dispute your claim if your choices don't make any sense at all, like your monster isn't in the game you chose or you don't actually fight it. You'd be given a chance to defend and explain your choice, but in the end it will be handled by a vote by the Van Helsing Alliance. Debates like whether a giant octopus is an animal or a sea monster will default to support the person who actually played the game and wanted it to count for the category. I am trying to be inclusive as possible and not force people to purchase games to be involved. You can't just play a bunch of EZPZ plats. A max of one EZPZ plat per hunter. This will be determined by the simple formula of (Plat Difficulty) x (Hours Needed). If that number is less than 18 then it is going to count as an EZPZ plat. Guides on PSNP are going to be considered the authoritative source for these numbers. In absence of a guide on the PSNP website, the Van Helsing Alliance will seek outside sources for the disputed game and then take a vote. This one is less about how fair something is, because everyone could potentially play these games, but more about what type of gamers that I want to reward with my money and whether or not it fosters the type of experience I am trying to cultivate here. I don't want to give my money to a group of hunters that each did 5 stacks of the same game that happened to have a bunch of different monsters in it and finished the event off in 4 hours. I think that would be a disappointing end of the competitive portion and would be frustrating to those that put some thought and variety into their game choices. An exception to the staged games rule are games that were coincidentally staged. If you have a nearly finished game and it hasn't been worked on since this event was posted in early August, it's fair game. You couldn't have planned on it, but you got lucky with timing. For an example of something disputable, I might play Resident Evil 7. I am already 93% of the way on the platinum. It might look unfair on the surface and any hunter can reasonably say it's not fair to just finish the last 7% and count it for the event. My rebuttal would be to say that I didn't stage it for the event. I didn't even decide to run an event until August 1st then planned it out in a single evening, started working on logos etc. and then posted the event late that night. Therefore I wasn't planning on using it when I last popped a trophy back in early July. Also if you look closer, all other base game trophies were popped in March 2019. Giving further evidence, this wasn't staged. Even if it didn't work with the time frame exception, I would rebuttal with explaining that the final trophies take a lot of effort. I will need a full playthrough and have to gather all collectibles in the hardest difficulty mode to platinum it. I would expect that this would be be allowed, but ultimately its majority rules in the voting and it depends on how other people in the Van Helsing Alliance felt about it. If I had a game that I worked on through most of August and after the the event started and I just had to spend three minutes to hop into the game and get a trophy for something like accessing photo mode to check off the bounty, i would expect this to be rejected and deemed unfair. I'm hoping there aren't many disputes, and don't think it's worth time and energy to spell everything out in black and white legalese. The decisions will be a consensus of judgment calls from the Van Helsing Alliance. Those judgment calls will be based on if something feels fair or not fair to other hunters. Even if I think something is okay or not, I might get outvoted by other members, so even I am not the the final say on what's allowed or not. It is recommended that you try to pre-screen any really questionable choices in the forum before you spend your time on them. The fact that you tried to get enough information prior to engaging in the bounty will be taken into consideration if the situation comes down to a vote, but it still isn't a guarantee that it will be allowed. Rewards: I am furnishing a $10.00 PSN card for each member of the winning team. If someone wants to be generous and chip in, I would be happy to add in additional prizes. If you are chipping in, you can help decide which kind of hunter you wish to sponsor with your gift. You aren't required to to chip in, even if you want to join the Van Helsing Alliance and help run the event. There will be five $10 gift cards, if a winning team is not full, the remaining gift cards will be given out to other hunters based on some categories that VHA will come up with like, bravest hunter (played most horror games) etc. If your team wins the event, your team's logo will go on all the event badges. The participants' badges will have a silver lining and the winning team's will have gold. Important Dates: Sign-up starts now. Sign-ups end when all slots are full. If they aren't filled before the event starts, I will cap it so the final day to join is Sept 15, 2020. Event Starts: 12:00:01 AM, Sept 1, 2020 (countdown clock) Event Ends: 12:00:00 AM, Nov 1, 2020 (countdown clock) --The timezone is the Mountain Timezone. Use the countdown clocks to ensure you don't finish a game just before or just after the event. --If you sign up after the event start date, I'll count any games completed during the event time frame, even if they were completed before you signed up. Slots are limited though. It's best just to sign up from the start if you want to be involved. ***I reserve the right to change or modify the rules of this event up until the event start time.*** Edited September 13, 2020 by Herr Hieb

YureiKuma
I'm fairly casual but I happen to have a number of probably relevant games lined up that I could conceivably go back and do NG+/Nightmare Modes to finish and help out a team. I was planning on starting up my final Witcher 3 run soon anyway, so waiting until September is fine. I'm new to the community, but if thats not a problem I'd like to join Clan Belmont. ArtikSkarab
This is a pretty good idea for an Halloween event. Great presentation, good length (2 months for 5 games seems pretty good) and a nice selection of various pop culture teams from various mediums (Though I've never heard of Kingkiller before; is it a good series?). I have to join Mystery Inc. as I've watched so much of that show growing up. (Calling the Velma role for the team) Hopefully the bounties aren't too specific as to require a really particular selection of games to achieve them.

The Kingkiller Chronicles is pretty good. Author is Patrick Rothfuss and Book one is called The Name of the Wind. Only downside is he hasnt put out book three of the trilogy, but it has been years since the second book. I've been waiting since 2011... *sigh* Anyway, The bounties aren't overly specific. They are more like monster archetypes, so there should be a lot of games that apply to each of them. I added a bunch of details for that while not giving too much away. You and some team members will split up a list of monsters and go kill them in a video game and platinum/100% the game.
