Revealed at September's PS5 event, this game takes us to Hogwarts in the late 1800s and your custom character is the star in this open-world action RPG. The reveal trailer showed off all manner of activities you'd expect at Hogwarts, including the sorting hat ceremony and a variety of classes featuring students in robes from the four Hogwarts houses. The trailer also teased Hogsmeade and dangers we may face outside the halls of Hogwarts like Dementors and dark wizards. Hogwarts Legacy is being developed by Portkey Games (WB Game's Harry Potter game division) and Avalanche Software (Disney Infinity) and is coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. A leak back in 2018 alleging gameplay and story details about a Harry Potter RPG set many fans of the universe on a hunt for more details, but WB Games never confirmed or addressed the leaks in any official way, never even acknowledging the project's existence. We broke down the possibilities, based on the alleged details, of how the RPG could fit into the Harry Potter timeline, and recently recapped all of the Harry Potter RPG details, and lack thereof of official ones, that have been discussed since. Some employees working on the game are not happy with Rowling's transphobia. Seems relevant to include this kind of information in the OP, when even the developers are talking about it amongst themselves. Within the team, though, some anxiety surrounds the work. The studio’s management has not addressed recent comments from the author J.K. Rowling that were widely viewed as transphobic, the people said. The situation made some members of the team uncomfortable and sparked private discussions among staff over the pandemic water cooler, the workplace communication app Slack. The Rowling controversy is likely to diminish some anticipation for the game, said Felicia Grady, managing editor of the popular Harry Potter fan site MuggleNet. “Based on what I’ve seen from fans, I do believe that Rowling’s comments have had some effect on the level of excitement they have for the Harry Potter RPG or other upcoming content,” Grady wrote in an email. “We’ve seen comments from fans who no longer wish to support Rowling or the brand financially.” The game will be a huge success, but some Harry Potter fans will be opting out due to Rowling so brazenly embracing bigotry. Once again, these kinds of conversations are only going to intensify the closer we get to the game's release, so it's relevant to include in the OP. Quote Rowling is already incredibly rich, and the money she makes from Harry Potter books or paraphernalia doesn’t particularly bother me. The issue is relevance: Anything that keeps Harry Potter relevant keeps her relevant. Rowling is not just “a transphobe” — she’s the transphobe-in-chief, the respectable face of hate, the celebrity representative of transphobia. As the author of Harry Potter, she’s one of the most well-known public figures in the world. Anything that keeps her in the press also keeps her transphobia in the press, and leads to further distress for trans people. It’s not just the money but the influence that money buys, the stature that her fame and relevance generates, and the fact that her reach does more harm than her bank balance. Hateful views on trans people should not be equated with some low-stakes spicy Twitter take like “the gunplay in The Last of Us Part 2 is uninspired.” This is about whether trans people deserve to have rights. The spirit of this statement, however, that “no one cares,” is probably depressingly true. It’s not so much that “no one” cares as that those claiming this don’t care, and they won’t be listening to anybody who thinks otherwise. This rush to defend Hogwarts Legacy, to analyze Rowling’s transphobia in a cold, disaffected way as a negligible factor in sales figures, ignoring the harm it causes trans people, may be symptomatic of enough people not caring that the sales will likely not take a large hit. If you’re making this argument, ask yourself: Do trans people matter to me? As the game draws closer, we will see more people making more excuses. That they and their circle don’t get involved in “Twitter drama”; that they regard transphobia as “Twitter drama”; and that a game that is indelibly linked to the world’s leading transphobe constitutes for them little more than a sideshow, an experiment, a fascinating sociological study into the impact of social justice politics on game sales. That they have disregarded the damage trans people face on the daily as nothing more than some viral tweets that they forget as soon as they read them. But for me, this is not an intellectual exercise. I will not be buying Hogwarts Legacy — not because I think my own decision to boycott it will bring Rowling’s empire of transphobia crashing down around her, but because I need to take a stand. Not buying a video game is such an easy instance of direct action to take. I know other trans people will stand with me, and I know some allies will stand with me. I also understand that some won’t. If you decide to buy the game, I hope you do so with an understanding about the context of J.K. Rowling’s transphobia (not to mention the various racist tropes in her books). But remember: When asked whether you would stand with your trans friends or stand with her, all it took was an open-world RPG to lure you over. If you’ve ever announced your allyship by claiming that you’re no longer supporting J.K. Rowling, now’s the time to prove it. It's more than just one interview man, there's quite a lot of yikes stuff that's been happening for years, it just came to a head this year. I agree with separating art from the artist, to an extent, though. But whether people decide to buy or not because of that is their own business. Like most "controversies", it mostly happens on Twitter or other online forums and the general public don't give a shit. By my experience, about half the gaming population globally are so backward and stupid that they aren't cool with LGBTQI+ people so the game will most likely be very successful. I'll probably pick this up used if it's actually any good. All I care for is the whole Harry Potter stuff and being able to run around Hogwarts, do wizard stuff there and explore the wizarding world. I personally don't care about the whole J K Rowling drama. The Harry Potter franchise was a massive part of my teenage years and beyond and I simply can't ignore that. Popular Post AusLeviathan Posted September 17, 2020 Popular Post Share Posted September 17, 2020 Not buying the game isn't going to hurt Rowling, assuming she's actually getting royalties from sales and didn't just sell the license for a fixed amount, the amount of money she'd receive from sales is so small in comparison to her wealth that she wouldn't even notice it. What not buying the game will do is hurt all the people who worked on the game and were doing so before the controversy started. I'm not a fan of Harry Potter, so I wasn't ever going to get this game, but I've gotten into the habit of posting new game announcements, so when this game was revealed and no one else had made a topic for it, I went ahead and made one for it, along with some of the other games announced. The controversy surrounding Rowling is notable enough that the people developing the game are bothered by it, so it's relevant enough to be mentioned. I'm not going to pounce on someone every time they express excitement for this game, so you and everyone else can still use this topic however you want. It is not because of ONE interview, it is because of her constantly and repeatedly hating on the trans community for month on twitter and on her blog. And now even her new book is full of this. So I understand everyone who doesn’t want to support her. But I also understand everyone who just wants to enjoy this game, because people have waited years for something like this. I’ll probably buy the game myself at some point, because it’s everything I ever wanted from a Harry Potter game and I love this universe too much to let it be ruined from such an awful person as JK Rowling herself. A bit like the Gotham TV series, that managed to create a Batman series without Batman. Looking forward to knowing more about this ?
