Sony Launching New PS Store on Web and Mobile This Month

Sony plans to launch a new PlayStation Store on the web and mobile later this month, which will remove the ability for you to purchase content for legacy consoles such as the PlayStation 3, PS Vita, and PSP. PlayStation 4 apps, themes, and avatars will also no longer be available through the web and mobile storefronts once the changes roll out, while content from your existing wishlist will be removed.

 

The alterations presumably preface the introduction of the PlayStation 5; source code discovered on the official PlayStation website hinted that wishlists will be integrated into the next-gen console, so it's likely the manufacturer is completely rebuilding this feature. Sony’s yet to reveal its new system’s user interface, but following this week’s hardware teardown, we can’t imagine it’ll be too far out.

 

While you’ll no longer be able to purchase PS3 and PS Vita content from the PS Store on web and mobile, the platform holder is not shutting the storefronts down; you’ll still be able to buy content for both consoles using their native PS Store apps, although Sony has been failing to display new releases in the PS Vita storefront for years now.

 

As for any themes, avatars, or apps you own on the PlayStation 4, you’ll still be able to access those directly from your console. And it goes without saying that any content you've purchased for any of the aforementioned systems will remain in your download list and will be available exactly as they were before. As mentioned, this is almost certainly all in preparation for the arrival of the PS5.

This is essentially what will happen with newer Vita titles. For instance, Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen is nowhere to be found on the PS Store if you access it directly from your Vita. The only way to get it is to buy it from the internet PS Store and then access it on the Vita through the Download list.

If You access the PS Store through your PS4, it sounds like you will still be able to buy them.

This sounds terrible. Whenever I go to buy digital PS3 and Vita games, I always do that through the browser because the store on the systems themselves are an absolute nightmare to navigate.  Also, doesn't this mean that it'll now be impossible to buy PSP games and download them on that system? I recall they removed the ability to buy games on the PSP itself a few years back and you had to do it on the browser.

This really is a bad idea. Might as well keep them accessible on the new store front and while they’re at it, knock down the prices by 85%.

Well that sucks, really hope it isn't true. As stated further down in that article, plenty of new releases aren't getting displayed on the Vita's native store, so good luck ever buying those unless they decide to fix it (doubt they would).

 

I don't see myself buying any more PS3, Vita or PSP games, but if I ever did happen to stumble upon something I want, this is gonna really blow if they're literally impossible to find in their native stores.

 

I knew this would likely happen eventually, but if the stores are going to remain open on their respective platforms (sans PSP since that got shut down years ago I believe), then what's the point of disabling you from buying them on a web browser?

Why can't we just have a legacy store for the older consoles? They can still have a fancy new store for the PS5 without screwing over long time users. 

 

Forcing someone to go back to the PS3 store is something I wouldn't wish upon my worse enemy.

I don't mind using the PS3 and Vita store to buy stuff, but I use the wishlist a lot. Every time there's a big sale, I check that first to see if something is discounted. I always can use a third party but, why? fucking ridiculous.

There is no source and the image from Planète Vita looks shady as fuck. Why are the dates hyperlinked and why is the phrase describing what's in the bulleted list part of the bulleted list? The formatting is bad. 

 

This is almost certainly fake since no one can provide a proper source. Sounds like something Sony would do though, which is probably why people are eating it up.

In a more-and-more digital gaming world, this move (if true) is completely irresponsible on Sony's part.  Part of me doesn't believe it will happen, however.

Unpopular opinion: this is great news! The PS Store is so unwieldly, with all the PS3 games, demos, avatars, themes, etc. gumming up the works. Having a refresh for the new consoles will make it way easier for people to find the games they're looking for, especially less notable ones.

And honestly, I'm guessing there is only a small minority of people still buying PS3 games. Sony stopped including them in sales years ago. And they'll still be able to be purchased through the consoles themselves. I think this is a smart move that will make next console's quality of life much better in the long term.

I can understand cleaning stuff up, but I don't understand removing the ability to be able to purchase old games completely. Surely it can't be too hard to have a separate section for "legacy consoles" tucked away somewhere on the new store? Completely separate from the rest of the PS4/PS5 content.

Sure, I imagine not a lot of people are still buying stuff for PS3/Vita either, but the Vita is still getting new digital releases believe it or not, and I imagine at least a few people are buying them otherwise they wouldn't bother to continue releasing games for the system.

Youtube channel PS Vita at 2 AM recently covered a couple of upcoming Vita releases that announced they were going to be physical only in very limited supply. This would explain the reason.

Stupid decision, it's easier and faster to buy from the app than from each console as you carry your mobile everywhere.
