Payback is Incredibly Boring

I've put about 35 hours into the game after getting it with PS+ and have mixed feelings about it.

The story and writing are atrocious, which I expected since it looks like a Fast and Furious clone and that franchise is the epitome of movies that are as dumbed down as it gets. The main characters are terrible as well and I wish I had muted the talking parts earlier than I did (one character literally says "Nighttime...this is when I come alive"). Ugh. There's a lot of repetition and padding with the missions and quests, too.

That being said, I have enjoyed the geographical setting, the car variety, a lot of the aspects with driving, and the activities and collectables. I thought this one was a doable platinum when I started, but there's no way I'm going to grind any more than I already have to get three stars on all the activities (especially the drift ones).

I'll wait until the DLC goes on sale to pick up those four trophies, which should leave me at around 80-85% trophy completion by the time I'm all done, which I'm fine with.

Payback is basically a worse Forza Horizon clone with a bit of the new Fast and Furious "action" mixed into it.
I played it for like 10hrs or so now and I def like it more than Heat (because I dont like that you have to grind in nighttime in Heat to advance in the story) but one shouldnt expect a racing banger... The setting is nice but the characters are meh and the racing aswell. Esp. when you have to flee from cops and at some point before the finish line they just back off... I mean wtf, come on, Need for Speed is known for Police Action but they do it like that...

I quite enjoy the game. I actually laughed my ass off during the story. Don't get me wrong, it is bad, really bad. But it is so bad that it is good. All the cheesy lines, haha.

At one point I thought: now the creators are just making fun of their own game. Tyler was being Tyler and his opponent said: "What you gonna do? Save the world with racing?"

I laughed my ass off.

I think the collectibles in the game are one of its best parts. I really enjoy driving round finding them. Haven’t managed to find a derelict cars yet but the billboards and casino tokens are fun.

personally disagree with that, tokens in particular the hitboxes are very small and whilst most of them are fine enough, there is a few that require you to go very slowly off jumps etc which just feels counterintuitive if you are picking them up in the endgame and gets frustrating

Is Heat good? or should I just wait for them to remaster the old ones?

heat's genuinely pretty good, for me easily the best need for speed game available on ps4 right now. you might be waiting a very long time for them to remaster the old ones, if it ever happens.

I'm not sure why people are hating so much on this game, it's definitely not terrible. Story is shit, but it doesn't really matter. It's an arcade driving game, quite fun actually.

7/10

i find it fun as well. Its nice to make some races after work, just before eating dinner.

If i want a good story, there are movies for that, so why bother? It's a free game anyway.

Eh really wasn't that bad for a PS plus game. Was a simple enough platinum and I just tended to put on some music as the in-game soundtrack was pretty poor compared to some driving games I've played (e.g. the awesome Burnout Paradise soundtrack).

Easy enough collectibles, easy challenges once you got the Regera and the R8 for the drift zones, and fast travel really helped it become less of a grind near the end.

Roaming racers were stupidly balanced, either lose by miles or win in seconds. Apart from that, the events were pretty fun.

The worst thing was its soundtrack. Was there even one catchy song? I can't remember any of them.

That is weird.. Actually i found like 4-5 really really good songs ; i added them on my apple playlist

Months before I started Payback I was playing through NFS Heat until I got the platinum trophy and one of my complaints with that title was the soundtrack. At day all music has to sound like Despacito (though to be fair, the location is based off Miami so all the hispanic music is to be expected) and at night it was all recent trap+mumble rap, featuring the worst appearances from artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Logic who I know can make/perform better music. Also don’t get me started on that “Writing On The Walls” which (to me) is an inferior attempt at recapturing “Monster” from Kanye West’s MBDTF.

Lately I’ve been jumping from game to game unlocking trophies and Payback is one of those I’m investing in as of writing. I tried having an open mind about the soundtrack for this NFS instalment but could only pick up one track (It’s from Gorillaz but I can’t recall the title of). On NFS Heat there were some few tracks I did get a thing or two out of but playing Payback made me respect Heat’s ST even more. For now I’ve adjusted the volume settings in-game to have music turned off and all other sounds at 50% to balance that with my USB’s MP3 files (Spotify works too but I’ve never got into it for whatever reason).

As for my opinion of Payback (the topic, duh!) I think it’s alright. I couldn’t understand so much of what’s going on. This is party because it’s copy+paste ideas of Fast And The Furious, a franchise I don’t care about and based on my observations of the most recent films Hollywood should seriously consider retiring it. Even if I could get it still wouldn’t matter because it’s not a good FATF-like story either. With these sort of driving-racing games I don’t expect a great narrative but NFS Heat somehow got me a bit invested. Payback has failed to do this and I’d even go as far as to say NFS 2015 had better things going on, and even that was a problem with the decision to make all characters live-action. In NFS Payback you’re only here for the high speed racing and open world driving, however everything else that should matter doesn’t.

Oh, and to add onto my thoughts on the soundtrack one more time, NFS 2015 had a much, MHCH better track list than both the two Ghost Games titles released after.

The soundtrack is easily the worst part of the game, since you can't even turn it off. Coming from Burnout Paradise which not only had a massive library of diverse genres and some amazing tracks that got you revved up even before starting a race, here you're stuck with bland and repetitive ones you can scroll through in a matter of seconds trying to find the least unnerving. Plus it's always those two/three songs that play in the garage while customizing your ride that really dig into your brain like an annoying commercial.

Do yourself a favor and avoid this hot thrash, it is so boring that i cant even believe it is a racing game, EA has a unnatural skill to screw their franchises like no other company can

I agree, to be honest. This is like Lawn Mowing Simulator, something I can play on autopilot with minimal chance of error. I finished Rivals and started this immediately after and I went into this hopeful as I felt Rivals was particularly weak. However, compared to this, it's at least a challenge.

I started it for the 1st time in February 2019 and I remember being quite disappointed.
Now I re-launched it 2 days ago and forced myself to continue, now I feel pretty bad about wanting to play it, but I decided to platinum it anyway.
The game is pretty lame and boring, but at least it's damn childish-easy!
