Updates to Party and Messages

Following this update, Party and Messages will be more tightly linked together and you will see changes to the UI. Both apps will now use the same ‘Groups’ of players for Party voice chats and message exchanges, instead of having different groups setup across the two apps. So now you can start a Party chat or send a message to the group you’ve previously chatted with across PS4, as well as PS5 when it launches.

New Avatars

We’re expanding the collection of pre-set avatars for players to showcase on their Profile. An array of new avatars from your favorite games will be available, including Bloodborne, Journey, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, The Last of Us Part II, The Last of Us Remastered, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and many more.

Mute all Mics from Quick Menu

We’ve added an option to “Mute all Microphones” in the Quick Menu, so you can easily mute your mics while gaming.

Simplified and more flexible Parental Controls

Under Parental Controls, we’re combining the ‘Communicating with Other Players’ and ‘Viewing Content Created by other Players’ into one setting – ‘Communication and User Generated Content’-  to cover both areas of communication and UGC sharing. This offers a simpler setting that’s easier for parents to understand and apply to their children.

 

In addition, children can send a request to their parents to use communications features in specific games. When a child sends this request, the parent will receive an email notification and can choose to make an exception for that game and allow the child to use its communications and UGC features. This will provide more flexibility to both parents and children.

Enhanced 2-Step Verification

The 2-Step Verification (2SV) feature on PS4 will be enhanced to support third party authenticator apps as an option during the activation flow and 2SV sign-in across PS4, mobile and web.

Removal of Event Creation and Private Community Creation

After 8.00, you will no longer be able to create Events or access existing Events created by other users.

 

We’re also removing the ability to create private Communities under the Community app on PS4. If you already have existing private Communities, you can continue to access them.

Updates to Remote Play App on Mobile and PC

At the same time as 8.00, the existing PS4 Remote Play app on mobile (iOS/Android), Windows PC and Mac, will change its name to PS Remote Play, and the option to connect to PS5 will be added. You’ll need to sign in to PSN from your PS5 to be able to access the feature, so sit tight until PS5 launches this November!

 

 As a reminder, a PS4 system with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended to download the update.

I have just updated and my friends list is no longer visible, I am getting a WS-44369-6 error. From a quick search it seems that I am not the only one, it may also affect parties.

This happened with me, I restarted my console and it was normal again

Same here, the update has nuked my friends list and rebooting the system didn't help . Thanks for nothing Sony, you made a load of pointless and unrequested changes that caused more problems than you solved. UPDATE: Power Cycling my console didn't help either.

The blog also fails to mention that when you start a party chat, your voice is recorded for moderation.

EDIT: Party members can record you in their gameplay etc, but you have an option to turn that off.

WHAT!?!?!?!?! How is that legal? Is there anyway to turn it off? This is serious Big Brother Territory. 1984 was a warning, people, not a training manual!

It's added to our account: so edit profile and select change avatar, and they'll all be there.

Here's another new feature, trying to search for your friends will cause a memory leak that crashes the system on trying to restart it and then causes your external Hard Drive to need repairing once the system reboots - just what I always wanted.....not! EDIT: I've just checked the amount of Hard Drive I have left on both Drives and for some unknown reason, some of my games have ballooned massively in size e.g. The Handsome Collection went from approx 60gb to 100.9gb.

Does that also include 1 vs 1 with your friends? That's really creepy if I am being honest.

 

They should only allow this feature if you are in a party with more than 2 people and you are in a room with someone who is NOT on your friends list.

 

Recording ALL parties just seems crazy.

 

PS Who is gonna monitor this? Aren't there like at least 100,000 - 200,000 users logged online in PSN at any one time?

As someone who never joins parties with random strangers you have nothing to worry about.

 

Since people seem to not be able to read: it is NOT sony recording you, the people you are in a party with have the option to record it... much panic for nothing.

No idea I'm afraid but what I do know is, this update is a broken mess and should be avoided like the plague until the problems get worked out.

It is not worded well, but Sony puts "These recordings", how else would Sony be able to validate that a recording occured and with which users if it wasn't directly from their servers? Also how would one go about recording a group chat anyway not through the PS4 itself? You'd have voices (yourself) missing, also how could Sony verify it is real or not. People just going to magically know someones voice from the 5 million or so users they have on PSN.

Someone could just send them any faked MP3 recording in that coase. Why would Sony need to ask your permission and say "you will be recorded" if it wasn't on their hardware?

 

Probably isn't a big deal anyway, likely Sony have been doing this since the release of the PS4, a quick google search
