aimeraya
I think for most of horror game fans, the cancellation of P.T was really regrettable. Again fxxk KONAMI. [From Wiki] Visage is an upcoming independent survival horror video game in development by SadSquare Studio. The game is a spiritual successor to P.T. The game ran Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight campaigns. Now we need to wait for a release date, hope that it'll be soon.
PostalDudeRus
As old survival horror veteran I must say that survival horror genre is dead as hell. Another "walking-spooky" interior simulator to be released? Nothing to pay attention to. I can't see any reason to call games like Layers of fear (and everything similar) as survival horror. This is basically Power Point presentation but in 3D with jump-scares. They not even trying to make survival horror anymore. And we all know why... Because it's not profitable to release high-budged survival-horor games on market full of casual battle-royals or shitty "open"-world games. Anyway, I can't say anything about this title before I play it, but I have very bad feeling about all games trying to parody teaser of SHs game. Survival horror is a subset of the horror video game genre that emphasises the sensation and urge to stay alive. The aesthetic quality of vulnerability fits the mindset of players who want to experience fear within a context that suits this purpose. Survival Horror Video Games ("SHVG") maintain player vulnerability by keeping the resources scarce and the playable characters underpowered. While the objective in SHVGs is to stay alive, the presence of an adversary can lead to a compromise of this particular goal unless the player chooses to react. This demands the player to know their capabilities within the game to take meaningful action and see the result of their decisions and choices in favour of keeping the controllable character alive. To do so, player emotion becomes an evaluation of in-game events that can be of critical importance to the player’s future decisions. Driven by fear of possible threats, the player can experience a psychological discomfort in being isolated, a key characteristic of SHVGs that fosters terror. While the sensation of staying alive and the feeling of anxiety, vulnerability and isolation form the building blocks of the subgenre, SHVGs vary to a great extent. While some SHVGs give players a way to eliminate the danger, often in the form of weapons, others present a non-combat playstyle where the player needs to hide or run from adversaries.

Layers of Fear isn't part of the survival horror genre, so not sure why you are tying it to that here. It's not a walking simulator either. It's a story-based psychological horror told in first person that just doesn't lean on running around, shooting and backtracking. There are puzzle solving elements, jump scares, collectibles, interactive environments etc. You can actually see a direct comparison with the devs of Layers of Fear/Blair Witch etc with their next game - The Medium - which is an actual Survival horror game coming soon. Based on what you wrote, I think you got your genres a bit confused. Also, I haven't used PowerPoint for a while, but if it can run presentations with the fidelity of Layers of Fear, i'm about to get promoted at work. I can think of a bunch of survival horror games which were both great and released in the last few years - Evil Within 1 & 2, Alien Isolation, Resident Evil 2 remake, Daymare: 1998, Resident Evil 7, Outlast, Dead Space 1 & 2. Unless your personal definition of Survival Horror extends to solely 'ammo conservation' '3rd person' and only the game content within the original Resident Evil and Silent Hill games. Survival horror is still alive and well - it's just not an exact template of those 90's games.

I can agree with ya on that as to me horror lately has turned into a jump scare fest of nothing new or just reruns of past horror games. nothing really good is made in the field of horror as of late due to jump scares being easy to make and print for the reactions of dumass youtubers and twitch streamers. I will admit I have not played all horror games of the last 2 years. but I have played a good chuck and most if not all is just walking down halls ripping off the crap that is PT like layers of fear. I mean it is cool the art style and is an "ok" game but 2 is crap and same goes with observer, rise of insanity, welcome to hanwell, soma and back in 1995. If your going to make a horror game you need to try and not make it full of loud music and random jump scares. if you plan to pull off a jump scare with say no sound it makes it better and if you place it in a place that is not so obvious then it can work but if you do a lot it becomes as scary as me running up to you slowly and popping a balloon near your ear. I keep looking for a horror game that is scary and will make me jump but all I see is just boring jump scare fest of games and crapy games like PT being praised for no damned reason because oh it is a new entry in the SH series or because it has a Kojima logo on it. I mean the hype around PT is alot like Dear Esters hype all over again. A boring walking sim that leads to a pointless story and worse of all is not even worth replaying and the horror is not even memorable.

MandA60VISE
Man, I wish I didn't work an opening shift at work so I could stay up later and enjoy horror games in the environment they're meant to be played in. I've only played Fatal Frame 1 and 2 so far out of the whole genre. They were both great experiences.

DeadlyPerfume
I've always heard good things about this game, had no idea it was releasing on PS4 or even finished. I try to support indie devs but my expectations for anything horror this year are rock bottom after Remothered: Broken Porcelain and Amnesia: Rebirth.
