Server Closed - Offline Method to Unlock REPAID IN BLOOD trophy in Ver. 1.05

The servers for Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor are now closed, but fear not, Monolith patched the game (and it now works in the latest patch for the GOTY edition) so that the platinum trophy and the 100% is still obtainable. Previously to unlock  Repaid in Blood you had to wait for an online vendetta mission to spawn.

 

Now with the server gone you simply have to: Kill an orc captain that has the "^ Revenge Target" flag in the Sauron's Army menu.

 

A captain gets this flag by either killing you while a captain, or killing you as a grunt (which gets them promoted to captain). I can't recall if there is a tutorial that teaches you about revenge killing, but I imagine this will be practically unmissable in the course of a normal playthrough. As captains are often in a group of enemies, it can be difficult to ensure the captain gets the kill blow. So the simplest way to get this is to just let a grunt kill you once you get past the tutorial. If there are no open spots he will duel an existing captain and kill them to take his spot. Kill the captain and the trophy will pop.

**The closure date for the servers had been extended to "Mid-January."

A patch has been released to make it so that the shutdown will not affect the ability to get the Repaid in Blood Trophy. With the release of that patch on 1/12, the server has been closed. Repaid in Blood is currently unlockable on vanilla version, but not on most GOTY editions. Monolith is investigating.**

This was mentioned in the vanilla game forum, but it also applies to the GOTY edition which has a separate trophy list (the only version it doesn't apply to is the PS3 version which does not have the nemesis system). The server will be going down on 12/31/20. This will remove the ability to do Vendetta missions, completing one is required for the trophy  Repaid in Blood. Whenever a person on your friends list or a random player is killed by a captain, A vendetta mission can spawn. This has you hunt down and kill that enemy. This can be done very early in game, 1-1.5 hours max to complete from start.

 

NOTE: That is the only trophy affected by the shutdown, none of the DLC trophies are affected. There has been NO shutdown announcement for the sequel's servers at this time. All Shadow of War trophies remain obtainable for now.

 

As soon as you finish the tutorial and get spit out into the open world map, traverse the various dark areas of the map and reforge towers to make more areas of the map visible. Once you have reforged several towers, do "The Spirit of Mordor" main mission to learn about the orc hierarchy and how to undermine their authority. This unlocks various missions to undermine Captains, including Vendetta missions. One spawned immediately for me. If you are unsure what the icon for a vendetta mission looks like, press the touchpad to open the map and then press  to display the map legend. If you are not seeing any vendetta missions then do the other initial main mission and see if one spawns after that.

 

Start the vendetta mission and patrol the area marked in green on your map. Enter Wraith mode with  and look for red enemies, those are the Captains. Press  to identify any unknown Captains. Once you identify the target of your mission, it will paint that captain and identify its weaknesses and strengths, pay attention to them. Kill the enemy and the mission will complete and the trophy will pop. If you die during a vendetta mission, you fail, it disappears from the map, and you will have to wait for another mission to appear.

 

2ND ACCOUNT METHOD
If you aren't having any luck having random killed people vendetta missions show up and/or your friends aren't playing it, you can create a second PSN account (if you don't already have one), friend it, then start the game on it and let yourself get killed several times (just make sure those that killed you become captains). Then switch back over to your main account and see if you get a vendetta mission to avenge your other account.

 

edit 11/02/20: added some more information and a method to get it with another PSN account.

edit 12/27/20: added note that DLC trophies are not affected and the trophies for the sequel, Shadow of War, are not affected.

edit 01/03/21: Servers still as of 8 hours ago, this is likely the last day. I would expect them to turn them off at some point tomorrow, the first work day after the holiday.

edit 01/04/21: Server still up, Monoloth post in discords indicates a reprieve to Mid-January with exact date to follow at a later time.

edit 01/02/21: Patch will be released next week so that the server shutdown will not affect the ability to get Repaid in Blood.

edit 01/12/21: Patch released to strip out online features and supposedly to give Repaid in Blood trophy the new unlock condition of doing a revenge kill, killing a captain that has killed you. It does not appear to be working in the GOTY edition.

edit 01/22/21: Monolith confirms Repaid in Blood trophy is only unlocking on some region versions of the GOTY edition, they are investigating.

edit 02/02/21: Patch 1.05 released which fixes the issue in other versions of the GOTY edition. Can now be unlocked offline on all platforms. New method is explained above.

The missions themselves are technically content and you won't be able to do them anymore. But I do get what you mean, trophies aren't a priority for devs most the time

Are the servers down today? Mine says cant connect to servers when check leaderboards and when you press option in gsme it says cannot connect onli e. But i saw a couple of players earned it today wth???

I've been slowly playing through Shadow of Mordor: GOTY edition for awhile now. I need to get back on it.

@Guardian_owl - Thanks for the heads up on this. I think i'll just download it, play until i get the trophy so it's secure then come back again later once I have a spare window of time. I was going to come back and play this game anyway since Shadow of War is on PS+ this month.

I think that might help as someone on my friends list was who i had to avenge.

This is ridiculous. This a a purely single player experience that they just ruined the platinum too. I’m glad to have recently just finished up my platinum to this but again I know this news will go under the radar for most that haven’t played it yet and realize it when it’s too late. They really need to just start changing trophy requirements when it comes to games like this.

Did you do the main mission where you install an Orc as Captain? Did you unlock every forge tower available so you have maximum view of the map? (as I don't think you can see missions that pop up on dark portions of the map). You don't have to be connected to WB play for the mission to spawn.

I completed the tutorial section, completed a main mission, unlocked every forge tower available, logged into an alternate to do the same thing and let myself get killed several times. I logged right back into my main and still nothing has popped up. I can’t figure out what it is I am doing wrong.

 

I’m playing the original version of the game, not the goty and I have my alt account friended. 

 

EDIT: i just kept playing and eventually a vendetta mission showed up. Nvm

I find it absolutely hilarious that both times, Mad Max AND Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, I get the platinum AND 100 percent BEFORE there was a server shutdown announcement. I was months ahead of time.

 

Pathetic. You got jackasses like Jim Ryan at the helm, who only not wants to cut off the PS3/Vita lineup (and considers anybody still playing on those systems to be a moron) but also prematurely end the PS4 in the fashion that more people will jump ship on the PS5 when it launches this month.

 

Well Jim Ryan can take his words and shove them right up his fucking dick. I'm not saying WBGames is doing this in response or anything which I highly doubt, but it goes to show that online integration in single player games was and is practically forced.

 

They're no different from EA and Square Enix forcing the developers to implement online integration. I suppose one day Just Cause 3 will have issues with the online trophies, because the same company who made that game made Mad Max. And now they're making it to where Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor could possibly be unobtainable.

 

A few years from now, Middle Earth: Shadow of War will fall under the same fate, because that ALSO has forced online trophies, probably WBGames forcing Monolith Studios to put in some kind of online.

 

Single player SHOULD be just that, single player. These publishers are scummier than ever before, which is why I'm hesitant to just jump right into the PS5 generation and be subject to microtransactions/lootboxes, DRM bullshit, countless deluxe editions, and the ever expensive Season Pass deal.

Hey All

 

Just booted this game up upon hearing Repaid in Blood will soon become unobtainable.

 

I followed the advice here, activated all of the forge towers and completed 2 story missions, at which point Vendetta Missions began spawning on my map.

 

I didn't get a prompt for them, but I brought up my Map and used R1 to bring up the legend and sure enough I had one.

 

Glad to have this done, but for anyone worried about missing it, it truly should only take about 90 minutes max.

I just got the trophy, it's super super easy. No need for a WB account or boosting sessions. At least 4 vendetta missions spawned on the map from folks who weren't on my friends list after the first couple of story missions. The game also gave a notification to say these missions were now on the map.
