Popular Post willmill97
To the people that are FOR the idea of these new squares. I think you're missing the point of why everyone else wants the standard system back. Not because we think rectangles are pwetty shapes, but of consistency. (Obviously this wouldn't happen and I'm not banking on it) but for example if every trophy list from PS3-5 was changed to a square I don't think anyone would care. But it's the inconsistency of squares among rectangles in what our lists will become that doesn't sit well with people, including myself.

Not really. If he pulls it from the PSN store, everything is square.

Okay that could work but what about the lists taking up more space? That'd still be an issue. EDIT: They take up double the space, and the text has a lot of empty space. I think it looks dreadful without having to rework the text to fit the bigger icons. wouldn't it just be easier to crop it to be rectangle? There's far fewer PS5 games atm to PS4, PS3 and VITA games so it would take a lot more effort to retroactively change all of them instead of just editing the PS5 games. Popular Post I-SilentEcho-I
For me its consistency, uniformity and use of space. I hate empty space in UI, it just ends up being inefficient and the end-user gets an overall worse experience.
GT__Jedi
Personally, I think they should be circles. But then, I never really stare at the trophy lists and measure the distance between the icons.

You don't need to measure the distance, you can simply use your eyes and brain to be able to see that the square icons are twice the size of the rectangle ones.

I guess I'm just curious if everyone really wants to just stick with rectangles or if their issue revolves around the consistency of it. Personally I like the old rectangles best, I think they are clean and sized effectively enough that it is a good visual that captures the game and isn't obtrusive as you scroll down. Games stack well and trophy lists are neat and properly spaced I'm not entirely sure how you would convert the old one to squares - most of them are designed that the type takes up most, if not all of the image. But, I would much rather have consistency, so if all the images can be changed to square, I can live with that. The awkward spacing now with PS5 games taking up roughly double the size is both an eyesore and is inefficient in larger trophy lists. I would be in favor of the overall height going back to the PS3/4/vita image vertical, but switched to a square. Seems like a reasonable compromise. Edit - I guess I didn't fully answer the question - for me, it is mainly consistency. If the site does decide to implement a change to maintain consistency, I would prefer converting PS5 images to rectangles, but could live with all being square - I would rather consistent squares than the inconsistency of the current mix between the 2. fbdbh
The site is about providing a quick, searchable overview of the user’s gaming history - this is undermined the moment when entries are displayed inconsistently, even if it’s just a slight aesthetical / psychological hitch. So yeah, I think it’s quite important to consider coming up with a solution, the shape doesn’t matter - consistency and UX do.
TWOLF2016
I like the squares so that I can easily identify which lists are PS5 lists.
DrakeHellsing
I'm okay with the squares myself, problem I have is that the layout looks off to me. Maybe it's because the squares seem a bit big? Maybe reduce their size somewhat? Hard to say what could fix the issue and keep them square at the same time though.
Platosaurus
Wouldn't someone have to modify each piece of artwork to make the squares into rectangles? Seems like a megaton of work.

Done.
fbdbh
So, actually there are square-shaped PS4 games, like The Evil Within, you click on the game icon and you see that it has a transparent background. This would be a fix. Edited November 8, 2020 by fbdbh
Popular Post Xylobe
The inconsistency doesn't really bother me, but the wasted space sure does. Using twice as much screen area for the same amount of information reminds me of a lazy mobile-focused social media redesign (e.g. reddit)

Most if not all lego games are actually circular they just have the background you describe
Saionji
When I looked on the Games tab on this site today I thought this is some kind of glitch with new ps5 trophy list not properly showing yet but if this is how its going to look then I might as well track my trophy progress on exophase. I vote for the old rectangles or even better if theres an option to switch between rectangles and squares in settings.

woggly4
The problem is that the official image will still be square. If you apply CSS rules to make the new images the same height as PS4's images but locking the aspect ratio it would look like this: Spoiler Notice how the Borderlands 3 image looks like it could be bigger. The problem is that the actual image is rectangle but resized to square for PS5. If you would change the fit type to cover instead of contain the Borderlands 3 image looks ok but all other images are cropped: Spoiler That means someone would need to decide on a per game basis which image should be aspect ratio locked and which shouldn't. Might not be the best solution. Edited November 8, 2020 by woggly4
