Gripped Off Road Challenge

I'm following GTA series youtube video which works well for the last version of this I played, just wondering if anyone has experienced the following problem.

 

The patriot does not seem to have enough power to get up any of the hills, it doesn't seem to have enough traction despite the time of day or weather. I've tried various angles up to the 3rd checkpoint in and out of the challenge, without any joy. 

 

Has anyone else had similar problems or found a solution/different route/ workaround to help with this ball ache of a task.

Update- did it by reversing- took about 3 hrs of grinding. Now for the others.
