In an interview with gamesTM, which Destructoid recently highlighted, the CEO of Treasure recently revealed that his company is producing an a brand new game for Nintendo's handheld.

According to the gentleman in question, Masato Maegawa:

"We are making a new game on Nintendo 3DS now. Not multiplatform, but exclusive to 3DS."

When gamesTM asked if it was an action title, Maegawa said yes.

For those not familiar with the studio, Treasure was founded by ex-Konami personnel, who felt frustrated by the creative constraints that came when creating titles based on licensed properties. Even if the end results were some of the finest of their kind, like TMNT: Turtles In Time, which some believe was produced by some of the individuals who would eventually form their own studio.

They initially made a name for themselves by producing some of the most solid, fun to play, and flat out creative action titles imaginable. Highlights include Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Heady, Sin & Punishment, and Radiant Silvergun. Thankfully, most of these titles are readily available via digital distribution channels, like the Wii Virtual Console and Xbox Live Arcade.

It's a bit ironic that Treasure eventually began to produce licensed games themselves, but they too are all superb. Perhaps the best example is the Astro Boy title for the Game Boy Advance.

One has to wonder if this new title might posible be a follow-up to Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga, two of the most believe space shoot'em ups (or shmups, as the cool kids call them) of all time. After-all, there have long been rumblings of a Radiant Silvergun 3 for many years now. Maybe now is the time?

Unfortunately, the man who was responsible for both titles, Hiroshi Iuchi, is no longer with the company. Instead, he's with G.Rev, which also made a name for itself by catering to hardcore gamers, shumps aficionados to be exact. His latest game, Kokuga, also a shmup, was recently released on the 3DS in Japan.

Hm. I'd rather it be something related to Guardian Heroes, but I still would rather that be on PSN. Still, I guess that wouldn't be terrible.
