Sega Classics on Steam not recognizing d pad

So I have this 3 way converter (PS2, N64, Saturn) that I use for most of my PC games. However, when I try to configure the controller in the options menu of Sega Genesis Classics (with my Saturn controller), the prompts for d pad configuration aren't there. I've tried this with my Logitech controller to see if the problem was my converter, but I can't see any d pad prompts on that either.

Thanks for anyone that helps

Update: I guess it automatically assumes the d pad is what it is. Tried the Logitech controller, the d pad in that works fine, but I'd really like to be able to use my Saturn controller, since it's so much like the Genesis controller. I guess I need to look into Genesis retrofitters if this continues to be a problem...
