The Docking Trophy

Okay, so i'm on sandbox mode and I'm trying to go for the "Look Ma, No Tractor Beams" trophy (a.k.a the docking trophy). I've built an Apollo style rocket just to get in orbit around Kerbin. My command pod has the Clamp-O-Tron docking port and the lander within the fairing (behind the CSM) has the same docking port. Now I'm wondering if by doing this way, will the trophy pop after I do a few orbits with the docked CSM/LM after I dock, or rather should I do it the way the game wants me to do a docking maneuver like the one in the training mode. Also, is this trophy glitched or something? I really like to know if I'm doing this stuff right or not.
