How to Git Gud?

So I picked this up because I remember loving Revolution on PS3 but I don't remember sucking this bad. My men lose almost every battel and the only time I've managed to takeover other civilizations was when I managed to get some tanks. Why am I sucking and what tips could you guys give me to help get all the trophies?

 

I've only played 2 campaigns so far. Won the first because of my money and culture, won the 2nd by getting tanks and barely knocking everyone else out. I know this place isn't very active but I figured I would ask.
