Nintendo filed a new trademark for Eternal Darkness, according to Siliconera. The trademark, filed on July 23rd, includes a section that covers downloadable electronic games and programs. While this could signal the future distribution of Gamecube games on Nintendo’s Virtual Console service, the Japanese company has announced no plans to add them to their Virtual Console service.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem was originally developed by Silicon Knights and released in 2002. The third-person horror game earned critical praise for the use of fourth-wall-breaking narrative techniques to confuse players and add depth to the typical scares associated with the genre.

This trademark comes on the heels of the relaunched Shadow of the Eternals kickstarter campaign by Precursor Games, a game dubbed as the spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness. The post on Siliconera concludes that this could be Nintendo “covering their bases just in case they want to release a Virtual Console version for Wii U."

Hopefully they release it when they start doing GCN games.
