Level 4 Hyenas

How do u mount one of these things?  u need to ride a hyena for the speedrun time and in the guide it says press X and L2 but it doesn't work for me i've been trying for ages and die every time i try to jump on

I also suffered hours trying to jump on the dogs following the guides and it never worked. I wasnt able to ride the scorpion dogs until I collected all 3 of the communicators which opened up the path to the bonus item near the end of the stage. Every single tutorial I hunted around for seems to leave this vital piece of information out! The secret freakin item is what lets you ride the stupid dogs!
