Arena Mode tips?

Does anyone have any tips for getting through Arena Mode? The difficulty spike seems insane compared with the main game, which I absolutely breezed through. 

 

Whereas, I've literally not been able to get past Level 5 on Arena mode. Just to clarify, I am levelling up my characters and equipping them with gear - but the only time I even got close to getting past the fifth fight was when I randomly picked up a *lot* of Taunt bot equipment. 

 

Is it meant to be just pure RNG luck to get through it? Keep trying and you'll eventually fluke an amazing load-out? 

 

Edit: Okay, I'm a complete idiot haha. I didn't realise you could save mid-run. I thought Arena mode was rogue-like and you started from the beginning every time. So you basically just brute-force the win.
